  • ML824 Pembroke Docks last Sunderland.
In this video I visit RAF Museum in Hendon, London to take a look at the Short Sunderland Flying Boat that is housed there in the main hanger.
A few years back I used to live in Pembroke Dock and was intrigued by the history of the dockyards, in particular the RAF Base there and the Sunderland Hangers which sill remain to this day. I then learned that during the 1960's A Sunderland Flying Boat had been displayed in the town as a 'Gate Guardian', on Grounds near the church in the Dockyard, however it had fallen into disrepair and was handed over to the RAF for repairs.
After a bit of searching on Google I tracked it down to the RAF Museum in Hendon, and had to go for a visit!
The Sunderland has been restored to a very good state, and is now a static display inside Hanger 1 in the museum. It is set up so you can actually go inside it on the lower decks, which gives a great feel for what it must have been like to crew this aircraft - its very cramped!
The museum displays some history relating to crew members based at Pembroke Dock, and as you travel through the aircraft there is a voice guide which is the daughter of one of the crew stationed at Pembroke Dock during the War.
I thoroughly enjoyed the visit, and if you like Aircraft or are interested in the History of Pembroke Dock - Dockyard it's well worth a visit. Entry to the museum is also free.
Below are some links to the museum Website, and also The Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre - The Sunderland trust, which is now based in the Dockyard near to where the Sunderland used to stand Guard.
Stay Tuned, and if you haven't already - Subscribe, I have more RAF related content coming over the next few weeks.
    Thank you for watching.

My Uncle was a Sunderland pilot during the war, for Coastal Command.
    Did 3 tours.
RAAF 10 Squadron, based at Portsmouth.
    Bombed a Jerry sub.
Flew Churchill to Lisbon in his Sunderland. Churchill took the controls for a bit.
He flew a Sunderland back to Australia.

I got taken all around this beauty at Pembroke many years ago as a child…….. my dad bought me an Airfix kit and I’m sure the shop was in the plane……. some 50 years ago 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I’ve since seen her on a couple of occasions at Hendon and I remember getting inside to some degree ??
Always struck a chord, Sunderland being the City of my birth 🙂🇬🇧

I flew as flight engineer/air gunner on Sunderland F for Freddie on 230 squadron in 1952, great times there. Many nights refuelling after a night flight at 2am on a freezing January night, as you couldn't leave the aircraft without fuel in case storm blew up which would turn the plane over being light with no fuel!😁Eventually moved on to Southampton on Calshot peninsula.

My father visited this displayed Sunderland, and told me he'd flown in it as rear gunner on a number of occasions. Said he'd checked the aircraft number in his log book. He had many memories of "P D", Pembroke Dock.

I remember it outside the motor museum as was and being taken away on a truck with its wings detached and virtical, looking like a pterosaur on its way towards Barrack Hill on its last journey to London. There was a teacher at the school who served in Sunderlands. He told us how the tale of his crate fell off due to salt corrosion at take off from Singapore after the war.

Remember the Sunderland on display in the Dock when I was a boy back in the 1960s. Visited the Museum in 2019 with St Clears British Leagon but could not go inside it as I could not see any steps erected.

I lived in Surgeons house opposite the entrance at PD. We then moved to Married Quarters after the Yanks moved out. 1946 we watched a newsreel on relief of Belsen. Went to Coronation school both in town then on barrack hill.

I lived and worked in PD for about 6 years in the 2000's and used to goto the docks regularly - I was lucky enough to be allowed into the hangers too. Couldn't get over how big they were!

Thanks Gareth. A very interesting tour. I can remember Sunderlands operating out of RAF Felixstowe in Harwich Harbour on the East Coast when I was a nipper.

There might be. I'm not sure. I think there's at least 1 flying in America. This one is now a static display in The Raf museum in Hendon, London, and there's at least one more up at the Raf Museum in Duxford, England. The title was about the last Sunderland to be based at Pembroke Dock in Wales, UK which was a Raf base in Ww2.

My Dad. 25 years old. 10 squadron RAAF. Piloting his Sunderland out of Pembroke over the Bay of Biscay. Trying to stay awake. Trying to spot a Uboat. Thinking about his brother. A POW of the Japanese, locked below decks on a ship which was then torpedoed by a US sub that had no idea of the cargo.
