    War movies have to be like that. No great hero who shoots down hundreds of enemies and no bias for any country which fought in WW2, especially the USA. A good war movie like this has to illustrate, how terryfing a war can be.

    • @Infinite_Jester
      @Infinite_Jester 6 лет назад +39

      While Das Boot certainly has less of that than most movies from other countries, you can still see some glorification of war-like adventure indirectly, even though the characters state open disgust and embitterment towards this ideal. I think that's actually very well done.
      Another book-turned-movie which I think does the same is 'The Unknown Soldier', even though it's hard to appreciate if you don't know the language (it uses dialects to denote different cultural tensions, among other things), and the movie had a much smaller budget than Das Boot, obviously.

      They really did. The cast and crew had to undergo similar confinement (though for shorter periods of time) since it took upwards of a year to film in confined spaces inside of the authentic mock-up U-Boat interior they made for the film. The cast not only had to be able to move like a real U-Boat crew, but the crew had to setup to tight quarters to capture all of the shots.

      It has this adventurous attitude in the main motif, like the young men who sailed aboard Uboat crews who were often young and naive, seeing Uboat service as an opportunity for adventure, but the overall tone is forboding and vaguely menacing, such was the reality of their situation, whether or not they realised it at first.

I had to look up if the actors had had so bad English they had to be dubbed, and with a terrible lip sync at that. No, it just turned out that Netflix thought I wanted to see it in English. No way. I found the button for original language and watched the whole thing in German with subtitles (which I have forgotten if they were Swedish or English, but I might as well have switched on German subtitles because I know the language).

    When the captain and almost all of the crew died at the end of the movie, my jaw dropped in shock. There's just something about the fact the U-Boat crew had gone through unfathomable terrors, doing things like SURVIVING destroyer ASW bombs, RESURFACING A SUNKEN SUBMARINE, escaping the royal navy WITH the busted-up submarine, and then come back to be welcomed back by their country. Then a surprise air bombing diminishes the momentary feeling of joy and success by finishing the crew off right when they thought they were safe. Worst of all, the last thing the Captain saw before he died from his wounds was the U-Boat sinking underneath the water, right after he and his sailors worked extremely hard to bring it back from the sea that inevitably became its grave. Another thing about the ending is that, once you think about it, this would just be documented as another casualty of war, and little will ever be known about just what happened on board the submarine during it's sail. This soundtrack here sums it all up perfectly.
    This movie deserves every award it got and more

    managed to go inside German u boat from ww2 only last week in Germany after seeing this film many times before it brought it home even more just how brave all the submarine crews were very brave men, and it was real eye opener just how very little room they had for weeks and weeks,at sea. looking at the inside now of course around 70yrs old makes you wonder in our hi tec world how it even worked but they did..

      @@Feuerblut it was in Bremerhaven sub is still there anyone can go aboard for small fee. well worth seeing the sub was sank just before the end of the world but latter salvaged, then went back into service with Denmark i think but cant be sure which country used it. then retired to Bremerhaven where it is today.

    Honestly, something I think that really adds to the movie is the fact that we are seeing it from the Germans POV depending on what country you’re from or your political opinion typically the Germans would be viewed as the bad guys, but in this movie we’re rooting for them in a way.

    I shiver. The heavy minor strings without a trace of happiness, and then, an undescribable minor lift followed by a major hope that holds on as long as it can, only to give way to the rising minor again, but does not give up.
    And so the bass begins its hunt for the tempo.
    All this sorrow, and still parts like 1:23 when the gliding major strikes makes this piece of art complete.
    Without the memories from the psycologically and physically deep movie though it would not be the same.

      The real one came back and the crew got off alright. The boat was fixed up and handed over to a new captain who hated superstition. He had the "three little fishes" charm scraped off the conning tower and it repainted proper plain grey. Less than 24 hours after it went back out to sea without its lucky charm, it, its Proper Nazi new captain and its entire crew were sent to the bottom by the RAF.

      The war Germany started

    • @leeweinstein9326
      @leeweinstein9326 6 лет назад +38

      Actually it's a continuation of World War 1. Because of the Treaty of Versailles and all the restrictions that was given to Germany, which scent the country into both economic and political turmoil thus turning towards extreme leadership that did for short time help the country get back on its feet. Unfortunately due to the Ambitions of the leadership(aka hitler) wanting to gain back territory lost after the treaty mainly the Danzig corridor that cut off some of Germany's trade hence the invasion of Poland. Yes there was a lot of Nazi propaganda and lies that came with that invasion to help justify it but in the end what's a revealed to be nothing more then massive land grab. And here's the set part, the League of Nations stood by and watched Germany to this and did nothing. So to be honest there ways to avoid the war, but because of the stupidity and ignorance of the league of Nations and opportunistic leaders(I.E. Mussolini, Hitler, tojo, and stalin) of other countries led to this massive conflict. Trust me just, blaming one country on this is NOT entirely in the right... it was the actions and decisions done by multiple countries that led to this conflict, whether if it was was trying to keep the peace, for territorial or monetary gains... as you can see World War II was not as straightforward as you think it is. Just keep in mind I'm not exactly justifying Germany's actions I'm just pointing out that other countries did not help their situation at all.

    American war movies:
    - characters are the good guys, they are selfless and patriotic
    - going to war is our moral obligation
    - some heroes die, but the day is saved thanks to them
    - the others go home and live long and happy lives
    - flags! heroic speeches!
    German war movies:
    - characters just want to survive
    - war is hell
    - deaths are absurd and meaningless
    - everyone dies at the end
    - sadness and depression
