    Just wanted to update this review. Year 4, with a bit of sharpening I'm still thrilled with this Auger! This is an excellent Auger. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxe0I-fnTUByahTCyStrIBXsesSkQJKn8n It splits to 1/2 size for storage in the warm months and easily assembles for winter use. I can cut holes in less than a minute by and really don't feel the need to ever adapt this to use with a drill. It cuts easily with the included blades (which can be sharpened or replaced as needed) and has held up extremely well through last season, and now for the first cuts of this season. I do recommend this to anyone who asks, and personally prefer this over powered augers. These are quiet, still quite fast, lighter, and don't risk spilling chemicals into our waterways. I plan to do a lot of fishing this year through the ice, thanks to this trusty Auger. The 8" diameter is great for fishing pike through the ice as well.

September 30th my cousin was catching them in 70' in Sioux Lookout!!! Water is still warm in NW Ontario. Lake trout are probably just starting to spawn now.

    I bought a K drill two years ago and love it. I also bought a refurbished Milwaukee M18 fuel drill that runs great. I make a case for this set up because you have a drill for projects around the house.

    • @rafaelsakarya
      @rafaelsakarya 4 года назад +1

      I'm also a K-drill owner. Not only is what you said true, but it also takes less room when storing it during the off season and traveling with it on the ice. The only downside is it doesn't compare to the amount of holes the strikemaster or the ion can drill on one battery (but who really drills that many holes on one outing), also mine was having some trouble last season drilling through the ice - probably due to dull blades. Got them sharpened so maybe drilling will be better this season...
      There's an auger for everyones needs and applications; just gotta figure out which one you need.
      Edit: another plus for having a drill around on the ice is to drill in spikes.

      I hear that the 8" composite blade from Ion, taken off the power head, combined with a Milwaukee hammer drill, is the best early season set up. Then you have a G2 power head for after the ice gets to 8-9". Yup buy a G2 and use the blade in combo with you construction tools. Stop being cheap where the right decision counts, fish like a pro, buy an ION!

    I use the 6 inch for stocked trout. Super fast and battery hardly notices. Came with the 10 inch. Works as long as the blades are sharp. 5 amp hour battery. Back up battery is a 3 amp. Handle Bar broke on mine ( at the attachment). Ion replaced the bars.

    Thanks Jay, I have been looking at a new Ice Auger as my ancient Jiffy has about 18 seasons on it. Was looking at the propane models but am now seriously leaning to the Electric Auger side. Too bad you couldn't do a 10" comparison of the Ion, the Strikemaster and the new Jiffy E6 Lightning 10" I'm waiting for the Fall sales to kick in but in my area they are all around the $800.00 to $840.00 mark which is almost double a gas version, but given their light weight, no mixing fuel, no storage issues, no starting issues I can justify the extra outlay of cash. The only real question is the durability of the machines. My old Jiffy owes me nothing and has been a faithful companion for almost two decades,...I guess we'll see what this new generation can do!! Thanks again, and keep that fantastic looking content coming!!!

    • @goon8058
      @goon8058 4 года назад +1

      My main concern would be the decay of the battery after a decade of use. I have noticed with my lithium ion batteries on power tools (old 18V ones like 8 years old) they don't hold as many hours of use as they used to but the power is still there just need to change batteries more frequently. The positives though are these augers are considerably lighter, you don't need to lug around a jerry can, no need for Seafoam and other expensive fuel conditioners, you can use this auger in an enclosed space like a shack or tent.

    • @canucklehead0
      @canucklehead0 4 года назад

      @@goon8058 I agree, but so long as you can get replacement batteries I'm still safe for the long haul. I have replaced DeWalt batteries and run the drill like it was new, so as long as the drive components are built well I can honestly see the market shifting to the electric side for a variety of tools. My buddy just got a mini chainsaw to add to his DeWalt tools, he plans to run only food grade oil in it and use it only for splitting Moose brisket and halving pigs etc, which I thought was a pretty genius idea!

    I used to have a 10" Jiffy STX that was good to me for several years until on day the gas tank sprung a leak from the grommet holding the fuel intake. It wouldn't prime/start and gas leaked all over the ice. I said never again and that day drove to Fort Francis and bought a new Ion From Canadian Tire. Extremely satisfied with it! Never going back to gas power, not for anything on the ice anyway.

    This March I was fishing with a gentleman east of Red Lake Ontario that had an electric auger, and was raving about how great it was. That was until the 2nd day when he realized he forgot to bring his battery in over night and it got down to -30 C overnight. Top it off, we had just driven on snowmobiles 15 miles back on trapper trails to a lake. His auger would not start and my gas auger fired right up. Yes that is a bit serious of an example, but some days it pays to have a gas auger back up. Yes, gas sucks to it be heavy, having to mix and fill it up. But it fires up, even it is bone chilling cold.

    As battery technology continues to improve, gas augers will have less and less appeal, however it is going to take years to demonstrate the durability of electric augers. Many guys like myself have had a gas auger for decades. My el cheapo Strikemaster 2000 was only a couple hundred bucks about 25 years ago, and still runs like a champ. I have only had to make one repair to it in all that time: had to change the fuel tank a couple of years ago. That is incredible durability from a 25 year old, entry level, gas auger. I have no interest in replacing my gas auger with electric, but rather I would like to pick up an electric auger as a complimentary piece of equipment for thinner ice/early season.

I think they’d be cheaper with less moving parts, but unsure... I’ve caught lakers and Muskie around 20lbs, and walleyes close to 10lbs with an 8” hole no problem, so 8” would work for everything I do... Respect to you Jay, but my K-Drill/DeWalt 20v Max rang in at just over $300, and weighs 7lbs. I have mostly DeWalt tools so I have several batteries, last year I drained 3 batteries and drilled 130 holes. Electric augers are still too expensive and heavy imo, I'm a walker so that extra 10-12lbs makes a big difference. Also, your Ion has standard blades, so if you wanted to strong holes together I hope you brought a spud lol

    The only issue i can see so far with any electric auger is they will never last as long as a gas auger. How many people do you know that have a 20+ year old gas auger that still works well? They may be lighter, but will never last as long as a gas auger. The batteries are only warrantied for a few years if your lucky. Electric augers are taking over but are not as worth it as an electric. Only my 2 cents.

    Here’s the problem with electric augers after a few seasons let’s say you have some malfunctions or whatever and you have some problems with it not working on a full charge battery, would you know how to fix it? No! Gas auger no problem you can fix it because there are a lot of options like carb work or fuel or whatever electric seems good but gas will always outwork it
