Sound of calm, happy times when I was a kid. It brings tears to my eyes because almost after 25 years later I can still feel that space of good emotions somewhere inside.
Reminds of childhood holidays where my family would camp near Salcombe, Devon. The campsite we stayed at always had skylarks in it so anytime I hear this call it takes me straight back to those happy summer holidays
I worked in a place called Drumoak in Scotland and i used to watch these birds every morning, they float way up then fly in circles making this sound, best noise iv ever heard in my life
Yep thats what I say. This is the sound of summer in the countryside when I've been to Lincolnshire. I hear them near me down the canal at Trent Lock too. Meadows full of buttercups and some cows grazing, lush green grass and this perfect sound. So calming for the mind.
For me in Czechia, it's the sound of spring. I've encountered the English expression (?) that robins are the first sign of spring. For us Czechs, it's the skylarks. The sound of summer, for me, is the whistling of swifts.
@@beth12svist Robins are present all year round in the UK- in fact you're more likely to hear them in Winter when they move into urban areas for food. I've heard it say that the sound of the Cuckoo is the first sign of Spring and that spotting a Swallow is the first sign of Spring- so maybe that's what you've heard?
I was just about to say the same thing! This is the sound of my childhood. Long sunny days spent in the meadows with our ponies, with this soundtrack! Heaven!
Koito rob That's good to hear...did you know that A.E. Housman wrote a poem "On Bredon Hill"? It's from his poem / song cycle, A Shropshire. Lad. Sky Larks there then ........
Been seeing and hearing a bird hovering high above the fields around the village where I live, singing such a loud and complex tune. I wondered what it was and have now discovered it's a Skylark from listening to this recording. 👍
It's a dark, dank february. Storm Dennis is on it's way and I just wanted to remember out walking with my dad, the sun shining, the ground dry underfoot, enjoying the beautiful scenery and hearing the skylarks. The sound makes me think of picnics. Chicken and sage and onion sandwiches and battenburg cake, and a happy, happy heart.
when i was a small boy i used to walk to school along a lane full of farmers fields connecting one village to another ,in summer i would dawdle to school listening to the skylark s above my head i was always late. Even as a young boy i had an interest in our creator who made such Great things in the animal kingdom to enjoy .we have such a wonderful planet so sad what man has done to it , fortunately i learned that GOD is going to do something about it shortly to restore the earth and rid the wickedness way from it ,thanks for sharing this it brought back great memories to a 63 year old boy now lol ,
Am reading an exceptional book (memoir), "12 Birds to Save Your Life." The first of those birds is the skylark. I came here to hear it for myself. How utterly life-enhancing. Thank you.
Wonderful ! Thank you so much. This brings back so many memories of walking miles across the Derbyshire hills, with my young daughter in her pushchair. We moved to Spain 12 years ago and I haven't heard it again until today.
Takes me back to the hills overlooking Durdle Door & Lulworth Cove in Dorset, beautiful summers in the 70's, with kittens on the farm where we got strawberries & cream, & the sugary smell of candy floss & the clanky sounds of the wild mouse in Weymouth. 🕊
That image you described is just perfect. I also have fond memories of Lympsham in Somerset in early 80s on holiday with my nan, gramps, mum, dad and sister. We stayed in an orchard in our touring caravans and watched a thunder storm coming in but no rain. Amazing lightening show while earing Funny Feet ice cream from the village shop. Ahhhh bliss
My mother grew up in that area and lived in Wareham and visited grandparents in Weymouth. She is gone now and it's lovely to revisit her youth through this image of the skylark as part of her soundscape. Thank you.
In some parts of northern England and Scotland, it is said that anyone who lies on their back in a field and listens carefully to the lark's song will eventually be able to make out the words, which are said to run as follows: "Up in the lift go we, Tehee, tehee, tehee, tehee! There's not a shoemaker on the earth Can make a shoe to me, to me! Why so, why so, why so? Because my heel is as long as my toe."
If ever I miss England I think of my mates and I during the endless school summer holidays, walking the old railway cuttings in the Chilterns, through golden fields of wheat with blue skies overhead, sun beating down, accompanied by the never-ending warble of the skylark. "God! I will pack and take a train and get me to England once again! For England's the one place I know where men with splendid hearts may go...oh yet stands the church clock at ten to three? And is there honey still for tea?"
I grew up near the heathland of east dorset and I used to hear and see Skylarks in the fields opposite my estate, sadly all built on now. This brings back chidhood memories, thankou.
Beautiful song. Remember them singing and soaring then dropping like a stone. Alas, not to be heard anymore in the bogs or meadows of the Irish midlands. Evokes mixed memories of hard work making turf and warm summer days.
Many years ago at college the class I was in as a secondary student was named Lark. And no Lark exited on that island although it had its native birds but there we are.
The song of the Lark A painting by Jules Breton An earthly painting A young girl in awe and wonder Eyes that beyond see Ears that delight Heart of wishes Sun promises Earth groundedness and gravity
Everytime we went to Southwold during spring the sound of these birds was so uplifting. Near the cricket square. Looking out towards walberswick. Great memories in the eighties. John blagg
Do larks have regional variations? I used to suffer pangs of homesickness listening to the larks in 'Postman Pat' but although it is a lovely song, this doesn't affect me in the same way.
This is Todmorden, West Yorkshire, where I spent my childhood/youth on my uncle's farm. This is the sound of God! This is his favourite bird. This is the sound of the moorland. This is what paradise sounds like!
Beautiful... but I wish he would slow down and take a breath.... perhaps in training for their Cross Continental Flights, an amazing feat for these little guys... Like :THE SEA AND THE SKYLARK" (by Gerard Manley Hopkins) I Hope Mankind lets them survive, in part by avoiding those beastly Energy Wind Turbines... REALLY!

The sound of summer holidays....the sound of carefree childhood, the sound of freedom!
Agree Fergal. Here in England it is for me the sound of summer but spring as well. Just beautiful.
This is like nature's electronic music...just amazing.
The Skylark invented dubstep hundreds of thousands of years before we ever did

It was lovely to have this recording on in the background as my husband read Percy Bysshe Shelley's "Ode to a Skylark" to me. Thank you. ❤
Beautiful. I love hearing skylarks singing over fields.
It brings up warm memories from a troubleless life in sunshine and the smell of wild flowers..
The lark reminds me of home :) i grew up in the countryside surrounded by fields and woodlands. This reminds me of sitting in the garden in summer.

One of the most beautiful bird-songs to ever to grace the British countryside . .
Hail to thee, Blithe Spirit!
Bird thou never wert,
That from Heaven, or near it,
In Profuse strains of unpremeditated Art.

From the earth thou springest
Like a cloud of fire

I was on a walk and I heard this sound. Instantly I had to know what kind of bird it was. Just lovely.
Same just happened to me, managed to Google my way to this video and played it back to the Skylarks :)
Lovely recording. Reminds me of sunny days on Dartmoor & discovering skylark nest while hashing at Scorhill.

Listen to "The Lark Ascending" by Rafe Vaughn Williams..He captures the emotion of watching listening to these little birds , perfectly.
I just came from listening to The Lark Ascending and wished to see and hear an English Skylark. They are not very sonorous.

Every second. Birds have one-way lungs, so with the help of its airsacs, it's constantly inhaling and exhaling at the same time.
