    I did something along the same concept about 23 years ago. Faux and Murals were the rage. I grew up in an artist family so I was doing the late 90's - early 2000 thing.....faux stone and brick, murals on the wall, Trompe l oeil......i was going for the Old World look.
    I found this amazing piece of art, a 3D resin old world vase on an aged piece of wood.
    It was in a catalog, and the piece was mass produced in China. They wanted $180.
    I said, "Nope, not in my DIY budget.
    I went dumpster diving at a construction site, got a piece of wood grain fiberboard for porch ceilings (similar to siding), and I aged it with paints and stains. I trimmed it out in some rough cut wood to make a frame and stained it a much darker color. I roughed the wood up and put worm holes in it too and then made a vase using Polymer Clay and chicken wire. The vase only stood out may 1.5 inches from the wood.
    I drew the size I wanted on a sheet of construction paper and put marks where I planned on attaching it with small screws and brackets so they would be
    hidden. I molded the basic shape with a lightweight chicken wire and used the clay to cover it. I attached the brackets to the chicken wire. I did ornamental detail with the clay and made cracks and chips. Put it on my cookie sheet that was just for clay (I have a pasta machine thing and other kitchen stuff that I used ONLY for clay)!!!! Baked it. Painted it, checked for fit, and marked for screws. I Predrilled and put in my screws. Very carefully put liquid nails on the edges and lined up the brackets...(They had a U shape to fit under the screw head) Used a couple of long dog leashes to clamp it down until it dried. Made any paint adjustments and treated the entire thing with a flat protector spray because it was going in the bathroom.
    It turned out GREAT 👍

      I was thinking that too 😮

    • @suop
      @suop 10 месяцев назад +3

      I think that the whole thing goes into the oven since they covered it with liquid clay.
      Wood only starts to combust at 300 degrees F and most polymer clays bake at 275, so unless you’re putting it really close to the heating element or baking it at a way too high temp you should be good.
      (They may also be baking it at a slightly lower than normal temp for longer just to be safe)

      Another thing you can use for Some applications is drywall mud. I have made faux brick, faux rock on walls. I have taken quilting templates, used spray adhesive, stick it to your wall. Mask around it and put drywall mud over the templates. Remove the templates and you have a texture. I have done that rather than wall paper up by the ceiling. I also did smaller, single ones above the chair railing on the corner or end of a wall.
      But you could essentially do it anywhere. I always had a hard time getting the clay to a point where I could work it. I have arthritis and my hands weren't strong enough.
      I was given a tip....take it and carry it in your pocket for several hours before you are going to use it to warm it up, to soften it some.
      I eventually found a used pasta machine and that helps but you can't use it for food once you have used it for Polymer Clay.
      It's fun working with the clay. You can make some cool things. 😊

Then the ornamental bits are attached to the face of the drawers just by pressure of the Sculpey on Sculpey? Also...was the whole drawer set put in an oven??? Never worked with Sculpey before. Will try it.
