    Just received my SD1975 yesterday, bought in AliX summer sale. All green on the orange silicon band, looks fantastic, apparently flawless. Was worried it would be too big for 6.5” wrist, as it looks big on the desk but it wears small, love the rubber strap hugging it in nicely too. Wasn't a Seiko fanboy, bought it as a curiosity but loving it more every minute on the wrist, def a keeper.

    Well after looking at a few more "Tuna" reviews I decided to have a look at one, I'd dismissed them because of their size but when I actually got one on my wrist I was pleasantly surprised, the compact lug length makes this watch sit so comfortably on my 7 inch wrist, it is a great looking watch, almost industrial, it has an "all business" look about it, fantastically robust. The fairly narrow ceramic bezel insert has a really great action, aligns precisely with not a hint of backlash in the mechanism. That wonderful dome of sapphire crystal with the blue glint of the AR coating is a perfect "window" to a very clear and easy to read dial. The three o' clock window has a crisp border around it and the white on black date looks completely at home on the classic black dial. Fit and finish are excellent at this price point. In fact the watch head would still be an incredible bargain if it came without a strap or bracelet for the modest asking price. Mine came on a 5 row engineer bracelet which is fine but deserves a milled clasp. Personally I'll replace it with something from Strap Code, probably keeping to the same very comfortable design. I think Steeldive do very well with their Seiko homages, they seem perhaps a touch better finished than some of their other watches in my limited experience. My "Captain Willard" is excellent and this seems very close (I'm really talking about the watch head here, bracelets are fine or ok, the watches deserve much better) The lume is outstanding as is the movement, Seiko's very own NH35A SII, truly a masterpiece capable of +/- 2 secs per day properly regulated. Reliable too. Another future classic if I'm not mistaken. Thanks for bringing this watch to my attention, the start of a beautiful friendship (the Tuna 😉) thanks to The Watcher👍🏻

      That is quite a remarkable tribute to thus watch... I am thinking of getting the green one and then putting it on a nato. I was thinkung it would look out of place on my 7 inch wrist but I have seen reviews where it doesn't look too chunky on the wrist...great review 👍

    • @oktc68
      @oktc68 3 года назад +1

      @@sonnymorgan6141 I don't think the 47mm Tuna looks too big on my 7 inch wrist. Be aware that a nato strap will add some to the height (depending on your choice of nato, a seatbelt weave may work well in this instance) If you wanted a bracelet option I'd definitely recommend a tapered bracelet, which seem to suit the Tuna more than the straight 5 link engineering that comes with the Steeldive Tuna (Seiko use tapered bracelets on most of their braceleted Tuna's) I have a couple of Miltat bracelets, half moon and flat 3 links, both of which seriously elevate the overall feel of this substantial piece. I also have the Seiko Tuna-Lite (SNE497P1) which I use the same bracelets on, once the awful black plastic shroud has been replaced with a stainless steel variant, it actually looks like a Tuna! Switching between them highlights just how good the Steeldive is. I think I'm going to replace the bezel insert, while the original is great and has the very effective lume, it's surprising how much more authentic an aluminium one looks, it also provides an always visible, high contrast border to the dial whereas a ceramic bezel can get lost in the reflected glare off of the watches face in bright sunlight.

    Great video thanks. I came across Steeldive after my buddy showed me both his Seiko re-issue Captain Willard and the Steeldive dive homage. I don't know if he was just very unlucky with his Seiko but I know he was very disappointed with it and finished up returning it. The Steeldive was better in some ways. First of all there's the finish, while the Steeldive's brushing isn't of the same quality it's very easy to remedy. If you happy to to do a little bit of fettling or don't mind the slightly coarser finish the Steeldive is a very good bet. Personally I'd recommend purchasing from one of their UK distributors, as they give the watches a further QA examination, the ones I've seen from the UK supplier are more consistent plus there's no import fees to pay. My own Captain Willard is an excellent example, it's so comfortable to wear and of all my NH35A powered watches it keeps time really well, I set my watches weekly and it's never been more than +3 seconds out. That puts my Swiss movments to shame. The Tuna homage will be my next purchase, I've always liked the Tuna & the Turtle but a "real" Seiko is just more than I'd pay. The Steeldive alternative is a fantastic alternative, let's face it, your very likely to get a misaligned bezel with the Seiko and my buddy's was shocking on the timegrapher. (Captain Willard re-issue) Also there's no sapphire crystal and that lumed ceramic bezel on the Steeldive looks great. I know the bracelet on the SD1970 wasn't great, but again a little filing on the endlinks and a new milled clasp and it's serviceable, I expect to do a little cosmetic fettling with these watches but the watches deserve it and you end up with something that is such an incredible bargain.

    I have the Addiesdive with the sterile dial. It looks exactly the same as this SD.
    This is one of my favorite watches. I flipped the Willard, as the hands looked thin and short, small compared to the dial. I do not see any flaws in this tuna homage. I had the Heimdallr monster, which had so many sharp edges, a wobbly bezel, and a small minute hand. This is one of the best homages I found on AliX, along with Seestern. The lume is great, the hour markers are raised, the hands are legible and proportionate.
    I wonder if I would like it better with a steel bezel insert, and a flat crystal..
    This is definitely a keeper. The deep black dial looks better to my eyes than the matte black Willard.
    Of course, it looks weird worn with a button-down long sleeve shirt, but great with a T-shirt.
    I wear it with an elastic black NATO strap with a thin yellow (or white) line in the middle and looks great,
    The bezel may be hard to turn when hands are wet.

    I just got the sterile Tuna today from Steeldive. It's not bad at all. Just a couple or so annoyances. 1. The Chapter ring is a fraction out. 2. The Lume isn't all it's cracked up to be on the reviews, as it soon fades within minutes to almost zero, The lume on my Padi Solar Tuna is far longer lasting. 3. The bezel cutaways on the shroud are pretty sharp. 4. The screw-down crown is a bit...meh. But for £100 it was a nice way to try out a Tuna as I was planing to buy the Seiko version. Now I've seen how one looks in the flesh, I will probably get a Doxa 300T instead.

    I'll agree about inconsistencies. I bought one and the 5 and 6 o'clock lumed markers were off centre. I bought from a UK seller so swapped it but the bezel on the replacement is still a bit out. What you talked about around the 11min to 12 min mark about the click mechanism is totally wrong. You described the click spring first which is COMMON on most diver bezels. Omega Seamasters use the same click spring system. Rolex uses a slightly different one. Seikos use the same as Omega but with two raised bits instead of Omega's three. Chinese ones typically use two like Seikos. Other Chinese watches use the best design type which is holes drilled into the case with tiny 2mm diameter compression springs and a shaped end bit.
    There are also some Chinese diver bezels that use a third type which is the side mounted spring similar to what Steinhart and Rolex also does. Rolex GMT bidirectional click bezels are different yet but typically use the second two design types with shapes that allow for bidrectional rotation.
    The other thing you described is called the retainer spring. It's there to hold onto the bezel steel section. It's adjustable and if you pull some Vostoks apart you'll see the same thing. Seiko has it too... same with Omega... same with I'm sure half the diver bezels out there. This thin wire creates friction and is usually folded into an octagon if not more corners/edges up to 12. If your bezel is loose, usually it's because this retainer spring is not providing enough friction and the angles should be reduced - make the spring smaller. Vice versa.
    I get there are many watch noobs out there these days and beginners who I hope will continue to learn but all the material is online and worth learning over years. Have fun on your journey but it's good to set things straight.
    You can start by googling "bezel click spring" and "bezel retainer spring". There are maybe three common bezel mechanism designs and the cheapest and nastiest is the method used by Omega and Seiko. Execution is more important than design though! So finishing and assembly quality absolutely matters more. Here these inexpensive divers watches can be hit and miss. Then again Seikos have often been absolute dogshit and that's not even considering their pathetic alignments.

    • @fredhal8681
      @fredhal8681 4 года назад +1

      if you know how to properly disassemble entire bezel mechanisms and service them correctly, even do more to improve the feel and action of the bezel, it's well worth buying these inexpensive pieces where you can very quickly and easily "amend" little issues. Usually it's grit stuck underneath and poorly finished teeth and click spring end bits or even poorly aligned end bits that just require a rotation of a few degrees to get a perfect feel. Sometimes compression springs are too loose or tight and you can amend that. Usually the cheap Seiko click spring types fail because one or more of the raised parts snap off and get stuck underneath the bezel.

    • @TheWatcherReviews
      @TheWatcherReviews  4 года назад +1

      Love the comment , its stuff like this I look forward to. Yes since this video i have opened a few up and see that spring wire and have determined that the length and thickness does have effect on the 'quality" of the rotation. Thank you very much for such detailed information!

    • @fredhal8681
      @fredhal8681 4 года назад +1

      @@TheWatcherReviews my pleasure. I rushed it but I hope people reading can get the gist and start exploring for themselves.
      The retainer spring can be modified but if you make the angles too steep and the corners sticking out too much, it'll be much harder to fit the bezel back on. Although for these inexpensive pieces, it's worth playing with and testing out your skills with various tools.

    Have a question related to all these homage style pieces. I own the steeldive 6105 and after 2 weeks noticed a scratch in the ceramic bezel. I’ve seen videos of people trying to scratch ceramic bezels on other none homage watches but nothing marked it. Yet I somehow have attained a scratch and I’m extremely careful with my watches. Would you be so brave to do a scratch test on the ceramic bezel? Is there maybe different levels of ceramic and steeldive get away with calling it ceramic but it’s maybe not as high quality as on let’s say original pieces? I also had a big issue with the crown but I guess this can happen with any piece. So for me so far, my first experience isn’t great in terms of qc but if you don’t have those issues then that’s great as the watch looks great. But the kudos for the design of course go to Seiko.

    I have one nice watch but I think the shroud edges are a bit shape and the crown and the stem don't have a solid feel would be nice to hear if anyone has the same experience.

    • @TheWatcherReviews
      @TheWatcherReviews  4 года назад

      The crown has a slight wobble but this is intended, to prevent breakage and allow some flexibility, it has a slight pivot mechanism and is the same across most if not all Seiko's. The sharpness, I would say its more of a point rather than 'sharp' imo

    That SS Steeldive Tuna has a competitor in the form of the Merkur lower-end 'Sharkey' Tuna in the same range.

  • @edgeoffloridarider.1898

    the truth is that who is going to be diving at 300 meters.. the world record is like 300 meters. you need hitrix to dive that deep ,. specialized equipment such as a special BC not to get sucked under unable to ascend and several tanks to control your ascend as to not get the bends and that may take several hours! you are talking about 1% of divers that will ever get that deep, most divers dive around 30 meters tops , anything over 50 and you are risking your life if you dont know what you are doing even a moderate case of narcosis can end you.
    Honestly what is funny to me is that most people could probably get a seiko 5 with 100 meters resistance and dive ok . 200 meters is probably ok for 99% of divers it amuses me when people stress about their watch not being 200 meters resistant with a screw in crown when most people may take their watch to a pool if even that.
    The Seiko tuna that can go 1000 meters is an absolute joke , the watch can go 1000 meters but you certainly cannot . that would be like building a car that can withstand a 1000 mph collision .. silly really but i understand the allure of over engineering .. it is just cool i suppose, but it makes the watch too damn big and bulky .

  • @ericfelger
    @ericfelger 4 года назад

    Just a question, how is this not illegal? I mean these are clones. I would assume seiko has to know about this, why haven't they sued for theft of IP?
