  • On the 19th March 2024 the UKs Governments Department for the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) announced that that a mandatory scheme of registration will come into effect later in the year for all poultry keepers in England, Scotland and Wales. That means if you have one chicken, or one duck, you'll be legally required to register.
This is a big change to the requirements in the UK for poultry keepers and this video explains what has been announced so far and the dates the new arrangements will come into effect.
To read the DEFRA announcement follow this link:

Some homesteaders in the US told of a voluntary scheme, encouraging smallholders/ homesteaders to register their gardens. They advised listeners not to comply - this was not long after the government issued advice that they could take equipment for use in an emergency should that be required. The EU already tried to make heirloom seeds illegal back in 2014 i think it lead to changing seed laws for selling-seeds …. But originally they actually wanted people to register plants they buy with the council and collecting your seeds to re grow them was going to be completely illegal… I actually couldn’t believe it i havnt kept up with it all but in some places in France i heard they have a veggie garden tax …. This is the kind of fascist behaviour we where supposed to have been liberated from its disgusting in my opinion … the law was actually written so it could be re visiting at a later date to enforce and given the current legislation clamping down on farmers across the EU and our alignment with it in the UK i dont hold much hope for the future

Does this new ‘down to one bird’ rule apply to all birds?
That is to say; do we need to register a single budgerigar or pet crippled starling, or does this just apply to commercially kept birds such as chickens, geese, emu’s and pheasants.
On that note; what about the 7 million pheasants, set free to be shot by sadists each year, how does their sickeningly sad existence and ultimate uncontrolled release, to spread whatever they have to share with the wider environment, fit into the equation?

Here in Republic of Ireland registration for any amount of poultry has been in place for years ( at least since I've been here 2012) It's free to register & we've only had to do it the once. No one checks on wether we have more or less each year. Occasionally they will send information on lock down (bird flu) precautions. I expect your new setup will be a lot better monitored.

I don’t reside in the UK but if I were a chicken flock owner there, I’d be wasting no time getting myself a rooster and an incubator to self-perpetuate my flock. Also joining a small, clandestine chicken owner group with whom to barter. Basically, minimize the exposure of your homesteading activities to the greatest extent possible. I’d also ignore invasive, totalitarian rules promulgated by those who may have less-than-honorable or even wicked, intensions. Furthermore, I’d forgive them and wish them good luck on their day of judgement. They may very well need it.
Too bad it isn’t possible to teach those rooster to mind their crowing. The person who figures out how breed roosters that don’t crow may have a lucrative future. Good luck there.
