The entire population on the planet right now is desperate. The rich are richest. The poor are poorest. Absolutely! Even in places where we think should be safe you will be amazed how security is a big issue. In some parts of Birmingham, UK I learnt that robbery has taken a new dimension now and the robbers use acid or knife on their victims before running away with their belongings. It's sad.
@@SassyFunke yea, the robbers have mastered the art of using mopeds or scooters for their enterprise. In fact I learnt they even rob delivery drivers for Deliveroo, etc of their mopeds, which the use to rob people. The police is getting overwhelmed with these incidents.
In short the place isn't safe. When you can visit elsewhere without that stress, why bother? The summary of this is "becareful, becareful and becareful" That's not what you want for a holiday.
I like the honesty expressed in this video. A lot of times these type of videos don’t like telling the real reality about Nigeria as they blindly promote the country out of patriotism. We that complain are equally patriotic despite our criticism and just wish Nigeria reached its full potentials. It’s really sad that you have to be advising people to be respectful to Security. Nigerians have a tendency to look down on people eg jobs like Security Guard, Driver. They even consider them as below them. Meanwhile in the abroad nobody disrespects people because of their jobs this way. It’s surprising people can come from abroad and immediately develop such foul attitude to others like this.

Love this video. When I was there in November 2019, they could already sense my "oyiboness" right from MMIA. I never change money outside of the airport---I will be followed if I do. My best safety measure in Lagos is that i make friends with the thugs and area boys in my vicinity. They hail me on the road, but never know where i live. I buy them drinks from time to time and give them small change. However, this can only be applied by guys. I have come to realise that the most dangerous criminals are not the artisans, bus conductors or Okada rider. The biggest threat are those unemployed graduates who hang around drinking joints observing you. They are the ones that hire the Okada rider for a fee or a share of the loot. I have never had any major security issue in Lagos. NB: Some women do this too.

You're welcome Bolaji. I would advise you pick a hotel that is well known - perhaps a chain (sheraton/radisson blu/eko hotel?) Check out the reviews on google. Truth is even as great as a hotel is, you can't control how those that work in it behave. Don't be too skeptical...I have stayed in many hotels in Nigeria and never once have I been robbed.

Kinda old video to reply to - but I've finally moved to Lagos and been here for 3 months now. I'm white so people notice me and it gets a bit too much sometimes. Asking money or trying to cheat me in shops . Yesterday I had a bit of a scary experience while in traffic jam some random man suddenly tried to open my car door. Luckily it was locked and it was broad daylight around 2 pm or 3pm . People always think I got lots of money because of being oyibo so i do feel nervous in many situations.

@@SassyFunke Yes. this video was super helpful in many ways, especially the tips about not letting just anyone into your home. unfortunately theres no way for a mexican like me to really blend in when walking down the street we are easily spotted. are there any extra safety precautions you think might apply to us in terms of where we should stay, or places we should stay away from? i’ve also been hearing about agencies you can hire security from but also cannot trust at the same time? I visit ghana often, and have always wanted to pop over to nigeria to visit a couple friends I have there. But they have love for their country and I feel sometimes they sugarcoat how the experience might be or may not even realize safety could be a very different experience for me. I like very much how this video was very realistic while still being respectful to naija.

But ppl don't bother you even with your face out if you cover ur body with loose clothing and a headscarf. I have tried this method and it's LIFE CHANGING. We should remember, that is how the thieves pass on stolen money we can use same tactics. If they were to steal from a victim then, they really got nothing and they would have run a great distance before realising there is nothing in the bag they stole. Money has been shifted.

Regarding the money issue, can you not use mobile money to access money? - thats what I do, I send the money to myself on my own MM SIM then walk to the nearest mobile money kiosk to cash it. People use the kiosks to buy credit for their phone usually so you don’t draw attention to yourself. Pay attention to people watching obviously, Anyone walking out if a bank is asking for attention. This of course assumes you can get a local SIM which I recall the Nigerian govt making ridiculously difficult, hmmm
I just want to add that the people who live in your neighborhoods can watch your coming and going and get to know your habits and how much security you have or do not have. They do not need to enter your house but they can watch what you buy and bring home etc. etc. Your neighbors can know alot about you without you realizing it. They are the ones who rob you too.

Yes lagos is incredibly dangerous. I will also add - try to use a Nigerian accent in public , if you don’t have one. Also dress modestly and don’t be too flashy.
It is good to respect all workers that work under us, maids and all but the envious heart does not care about that so it is no guarantee. We all get treated badly sometimes but we don't go setting people up because of it. We should just be respectful to these people because that's what God would expect of us. Doing so we can be sure that he in his infinite mercy will protect us too. Mind how you go people!
Hi Sassy, I have been following your videos for a while. I see you mostly do videos for travel from and to Lagos. What about Abuja , as not everyone lived or like to travel through Lagos.
I'm white and I just came back yesterday from Lagos. I stay in VI when I go there at a particular Estate/Compound. There are huge gates with guards at the gate. At the condo I rent (for a week or 2 ea. time) there are guards at the gate. Myself and my woman will go for a walk in the Estate at dark and we've never had an issue. Police are known to also rent rooms where we are at as well. In the estate we feel safe. I wouldn't be walking around OUTSIDE of the estate @ night, but we've defo taken cabs to go eat at places in the evening never with any issue. I'm guessing most ppl will say, "oh...well that's VI for you." Perhaps!? That's ok with me. I still haven't ventured to any of the big markets in the day, but I'd really like to... but again... I'll go with someone. Plus, it's more fun that way anyways. I even had someone yell at me, "Oyibo FRESH!" Hey...nobody's ever done that to me in Miami, so .... lol !

@@suleimanuusaini3 I think that some of the condos in that estate are v. pricey! The guards at the gate also hassle pretty much everyone who tries to come in. that much I like! Makes me feel safer! So much so that at night, we'll ask the cab just to leave us outside the gate and we walk in and walk all the way back when it's night time. It's a lovely walk. I suppose we're exposed, but then again I've never ever had an issue there.
@@streetwiseguitar5113 you're absolutely right. The estates come with a lot of extra cost, which they refer to as service charge. This covers the waste disposal, sewage treatment, constant electricity, road maintenance, taking care of the gardens or lawns, the list goes on. To be honest, it depends also on the location. I lived in an estate at OTA, Ogun state. The rent for a 2 bedroom flat was #13,250 per month, which was #159k per annum as at 2019. We had stern security personnel also and it was very safe. You could walk out or just take a walk around the estate even as late as 3am and not feel afraid of anything.

Here is how I change money when I get to Nigeria. I negotiate the rate with Aboki, then I tell them to meet me at my bank. UBA, First Bank or whatever and when we get there, I tell them to pay the bank teller and when they complete the deposit, I will count the dollar one by one and we are done. I do not have time for their unnecessary games because if you let them count the money, you will definitely come up short.
I take security seriously wherever I am. Maybe I just like being paranoid for no reason. Whenever I'm in the jungle I walk around with a Pocket knife, taser and a pepper spray. If I could I'd walk around with my CC. I always advice especially women in the jungle to always carry a pepper spray (Bear pepper spray cos that shit will STOP anyone dead in their tracks). Yep I'm paranoid like that.
I think we need to create more good paying jobs in Nigeria. Give people less reasons to steal. Some of us will move back, some of us will stay abroad but I think diaporans can help by creating better paying jobs for Nigerians.
Will they work or try to steal from their employers. What they are describing happens in Jamaica. They will have their own business out of the employer's business. A side business.
@@itallturnstodust1216 unfortunately, the politicians in many African countries are there as a puppet for the interests of those who previously colonized the country and or those who control the assests of the country. You'll see this type of set up all over the world actually, even here in Canada, our policies tend to yield to America. So the best way I see to solve some of this, one person at a time, is for us to invest in one another, it puts food on the table, reduces the desperation that causes crime, everyone makes the money they need, and problems are solved little by little. Waiting on the government, no matter where you're from, is not the best idea. We the people, we can do it not as fast, but it can be done.
@@eileenwatt8283 nothing's wrong with making more money! The issue is when they steal and things like that. The solution to that is building trust, the won't all be bad apples but 1st take as much info on them as you can (family home, ID etc); pay in installments based on the jobs completion, develop a great relationship with law enforcement in your companies name, always find a member of your family you trust to oversee the project if you're not yet on ground, visit regularly, pay them very well and include family health insurance (health insurance is a MUST). Make it clear that this is a win win, don't approach business with your people from a capitalist perspective, approach it communally, it makes a world of difference.

Love this video. When I was there in November 2019, they could already sense my "oyiboness" right from MMIA. I never change money outside of the airport---I will be followed if I do. Hey, when I visit Naija again, I'll be glad to host you both at Eko Hotel for dinner. Eko is definitely my spot in Lagos---hands down!!! Oh, and I'm not gonna risk getting my hands up for nobody. 😂

My best safety measure in Lagos is that i make friends with the thugs and area boys in my vicinity. They hail me on the road, but never know where i live. I buy them drinks from time to time and give them small change. However, this can only be applied by guys. I have come to realise that the most dangerous criminals are not the artisans, bus conductors or Okada rider. The biggest threat are those unemployed graduates who hang around drinking joints observing you. They are the ones that hire the Okada rider for a fee or a share of the loot.
I have never had any major security issue in Lagos.
NB: Some women do this too.

Thanks for this piece Sassy and for bringing Ifeoma but for someone visiting and staying in an hotel room but without really knowing anyone in Lagos just wanted to have fun any specific security tips for hotel residence ? I know most of your tip can apply I.e no loins communication about your Busines on phone etc. But I’ve heard people saying their hotel staff set them up or they got Rob in their hotel or cleaners stole from them in their hotel room etc. Do you have any specific hotel safety issues for visitors to Lagos I’m just about to visit Lagos next month and I’m somewhat skeptical a bit after watching this
You're welcome Bolaji. I would advise you pick a hotel that is well known - perhaps a chain (sheraton/radisson blu/eko hotel?) Check out the reviews on google. Truth is even as great as a hotel is, you can't control how those that work in it behave. Don't be too skeptical...I have stayed in many hotels in Nigeria and never once have I been robbed.
Am in same shoes with you.Going Nigeria (of all places) ds week to help my mental health. I did rented a one bed apartment via Property Centre in a gated estate around Opebi...at least I can cook if I want to...try this as some hotels can limit your expectation! Stay safe!

Kinda old video to reply to - but I've finally moved to Lagos and been here for 3 months now. I'm white so people notice me and it gets a bit too much sometimes. Asking money or trying to cheat me in shops . Yesterday I had a bit of a scary experience while in traffic jam some random man suddenly tried to open my car door. Luckily it was locked and it was broad daylight around 2 pm or 3pm . People always think I got lots of money because of being oyibo so i do feel nervous in many situations.

@@SassyFunke Yes. this video was super helpful in many ways, especially the tips about not letting just anyone into your home. unfortunately theres no way for a mexican like me to really blend in when walking down the street we are easily spotted. are there any extra safety precautions you think might apply to us in terms of where we should stay, or places we should stay away from? i’ve also been hearing about agencies you can hire security from but also cannot trust at the same time? I visit ghana often, and have always wanted to pop over to nigeria to visit a couple friends I have there. But they have love for their country and I feel sometimes they sugarcoat how the experience might be or may not even realize safety could be a very different experience for me. I like very much how this video was very realistic while still being respectful to naija.
@@littleseamstress my best tip for foreigners especially women is to dress like a Muslim. I know it's a Lil weird perhaps. But ppl don't bother you even with your face out if you cover ur body with loose clothing and a headscarf. I have tried this method and it's LIFE CHANGING. @@SassyFunke also, go with a shadow person who will actually take the money off you while you remain with the bag that could be described. We should remember, that is how the thieves pass on stolen money we can use same tactics. If they were to steal from a victim then, they really got nothing and they would have run a great distance before realising there is nothing in the bag they stole. Money has been shifted.

Regarding the money issue, can you not use mobile money to access money? - thats what I do, I send the money to myself on my own MM SIM then walk to the nearest mobile money kiosk to cash it. People use the kiosks to buy credit for their phone usually so you don’t draw attention to yourself. Pay attention to people watching obviously, Anyone walking out if a bank is asking for attention. This of course assumes you can get a local SIM which I recall the Nigerian govt making ridiculously difficult, hmmm

I just want to add that the people who live in your neighborhoods can watch your coming and going and get to know your habits and how much security you have or do not have. They do not need to enter your house but they can watch what you buy and bring home etc. etc. Your neighbors can know alot about you without you realizing it. They are the ones who rob you too.

Yes lagos is incredibly dangerous. I will also add - try to use a Nigerian accent in public , if you don’t have one. Also dress modestly and don’t be too flashy.
It is good to respect all workers that work under us, maids and all but the envious heart does not care about that so it is no guarantee. We all get treated badly sometimes but we don't go setting people up because of it. We should just be respectful to these people because that's what God would expect of us. Doing so we can be sure that he in his infinite mercy will protect us too. Mind how you go people!

I'm white and I just came back yesterday from Lagos. I stay in VI when I go there at a particular Estate/Compound. There are huge gates with guards at the gate. At the condo I rent (for a week or 2 ea. time) there are guards at the gate. Myself and my woman will go for a walk in the Estate at dark and we've never had an issue. Police are known to also rent rooms where we are at as well. In the estate we feel safe. I wouldn't be walking around OUTSIDE of the estate @ night, but we've defo taken cabs to go eat at places in the evening never with any issue. I'm guessing most ppl will say, "oh...well that's VI for you." Perhaps!? That's ok with me. I still haven't ventured to any of the big markets in the day, but I'd really like to... but again... I'll go with someone. Plus, it's more fun that way anyways. I even had someone yell at me, "Oyibo FRESH!" Hey...nobody's ever done that to me in Miami, so .... lol !

@@suleimanuusaini3 I think that some of the condos in that estate are v. pricey! The guards at the gate also hassle pretty much everyone who tries to come in. that much I like! Makes me feel safer! So much so that at night, we'll ask the cab just to leave us outside the gate and we walk in and walk all the way back when it's night time. It's a lovely walk. I suppose we're exposed, but then again I've never ever had an issue there.
@@streetwiseguitar5113 you're absolutely right. The estates come with a lot of extra cost, which they refer to as service charge. This covers the waste disposal, sewage treatment, constant electricity, road maintenance, taking care of the gardens or lawns, the list goes on. To be honest, it depends also on the location. I lived in an estate at OTA, Ogun state. The rent for a 2 bedroom flat was #13,250 per month, which was #159k per annum as at 2019. We had stern security personnel also and it was very safe. You could walk out or just take a walk around the estate even as late as 3am and not feel afraid of anything.

Here is how I change money when I get to Nigeria. I negotiate the rate with Aboki, then I tell them to meet me at my bank. UBA, First Bank or whatever and when we get there, I tell them to pay the bank teller and when they complete the deposit, I will count the dollar one by one and we are done. I do not have time for their unnecessary games because if you let them count the money, you will definitely come up short.
I take security seriously wherever I am. Maybe I just like being paranoid for no reason. Whenever I'm in the jungle I walk around with a Pocket knife, taser and a pepper spray. If I could I'd walk around with my CC. I always advice especially women in the jungle to always carry a pepper spray (Bear pepper spray cos that shit will STOP anyone dead in their tracks). Yep I'm paranoid like that.

I think we need to create more good paying jobs in Nigeria. Give people less reasons to steal. Some of us will move back, some of us will stay abroad but I think diaporans can help by creating better paying jobs for Nigerians.

@@itallturnstodust1216 unfortunately, the politicians in many African countries are there as a puppet for the interests of those who previously colonized the country and or those who control the assests of the country. You'll see this type of set up all over the world actually, even here in Canada, our policies tend to yield to America. So the best way I see to solve some of this, one person at a time, is for us to invest in one another, it puts food on the table, reduces the desperation that causes crime, everyone makes the money they need, and problems are solved little by little. Waiting on the government, no matter where you're from, is not the best idea. We the people, we can do it not as fast, but it can be done.
@@eileenwatt8283 nothing's wrong with making more money! The issue is when they steal and things like that. The solution to that is building trust, the won't all be bad apples but 1st take as much info on them as you can (family home, ID etc); pay in installments based on the jobs completion, develop a great relationship with law enforcement in your companies name, always find a member of your family you trust to oversee the project if you're not yet on ground, visit regularly, pay them very well and include family health insurance (health insurance is a MUST). Make it clear that this is a win win, don't approach business with your people from a capitalist perspective, approach it communally, it makes a world of difference.

What a brilliant and an intellectual conversation on safety in Nigeria. All these points are well elaborate and imperative to all travelers to that country. Another hint is to be aware of your surroundings while using the ATM. Because you might be receiving some transactions alerts that you have nothing to do with, soon after you’ve left.

Find a bank at home and convert your money 💰 prior to flight , invest in a money belts or etc . I am black living in a black community 🇺🇸 I hear gunshots, home invasion. I have always dress down , when I travel I take my luggage out in trash bags , I don’t waste money on expensive pockets. I lock my car doors as soon as I get in . I but my money in my bra or pocket . I watch my surroundings all the time. Because I know people are watching me.
