The Peacemaker and The Assignment are between the best action thriller of 90s. Thank you, Roger, for defend it
This is a great Siskel & Ebert episode! The disagreements are a highlight and are high caliber here.
I remember seeing The Ice Storm in 1997 in a small theater in NYC. I did not want this movie to end. I was so interested in these people I could have watched this movie for 4 or 5 hours. EASILY the best movie of 1997.
I thinknof my dad everytime I see the Edge. It was his favorite movie.
12:08 Roger’s comeback had me in tears
--- I thought Gene's comment; "as opposed to hibernating?" was better --- 09SEP23
What's crazy every movie is good on here but Soul Food and Ice Storm are great slice of life films basically they tell life that we all live
I love how Gene went off on Soul Food it's so easy to make a good film that film relates to every race every person but same as Ice storm this was a great episode
Siskel was the worst.
I saw The Edge in the theater in 1997 and have loved it ever since. One of the best survival movies I’ve ever seen.
When Siskel knows he's losing the argument he resorts to it's "boring".
The Peacemaker marked the debut of Dreamworks.
I remember when The Peacemaker was marketed everywhere before release as a huge A-list blockbuster. Then after release it sank without a trace. The film was mediocre at best, but it could have been memorable with better casting (let's say Tom Cruise in the Clooney role) and a much better script
I saw it in theater and thought it was OK. CloWny is a Horrible actor and full of himself!
The Peacemaker: 👎⭐️⭐️1/2 - despite a wonderful set up on how Devoe and Kelly are to save the world from a potential annihilation, the last half hour ends up with tired TV tropes and a vapid revenge plot of Gavriç's family.
Soul Food: 👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - a brilliant comedy drama with realistic issues surrounding a family struggling through life's complex issues with or without dinner plans. One of the best films of 1997.
The Edge: 👍⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 - a terrific survival thriller, relating to not just betrayal in the wilderness between Charles and Bob, but also survivalism from a bloodthirsty and territorial bear.
The Ice Storm: 👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - a great indie film that never shys away from the dysfunction of two families during an ice storm. Again, one of the best films of 1997.
The Assignment: 👍⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 - an intelligent psychological action thriller of a jackal trying to leave his gruesome past behind him, with much deeper turns of events whilst the commander would do anything to assassinate the jackal.
Well, I loved The Ice Storm
The Ice Storm is definitely one of the all time arthouse greats!
Siskel missed the point of Baldwin's character. There's a point in the movie when their outcome is looking bleak, and he has this self reflection moment where he's stating that he really hasn't done anything w his life. That part I felt was well done. The movie wasn't a masterpiece, however, it was extremely entertaining, with great acting and a solid script.
The Edge was terrific, although there's one trope that's really maddening (poor Glenn Plummer) that would almost certainly not be handled the same way today. But the relationship between Hopkins and Baldwin's characters is tense and fascinating, and it also features the best movie performance from a bear I've ever seen (Bart the Bear -- who got FOURTH billing! RIP Bart.)
Harold Perrineau, actually. You're thinking of the other black guy with dreads.
The soundtrack is what makes The Edge work.

Great score/soundtrack.
"The Edge" is a stone-cold classic. Siskel was wrong, there.
I can’t stand George Clooney. He just oozes smugness and ego IMO.
If George Clooney is the star of a film I will usually avoid it. 🤣
The assignment was a very good film. It seemed rather weird that siskel seemed like he wasn’t trying to have a good time with most of those films. Roger did.
Soul Food sounds like it was inspired by Eat Drink Man Woman three years earlier. Surprising that they didn't consider this. I think there was also a later version with Raquel Welch.
Tortilla Soup was the remake with Welch!
@@scottcole6093 Hey cool, thanks! It's interesting that three different films were made of this story pretty close in time and all were pretty successful.
The Peacemaker is retread cliches film but I enjoy the chemistry between Clooney & Kidman. 👎🌟🌟
I really love Soul Food, it reminds me of my family, we used to cook everything everyone love & favorites. It's well-written & strong solid acting with good R&B songs. 👍🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I have to agree with siskel with The Edge. 👎🌟🌟
The Ice Storm is Ang Lee's best yet since The Wedding Banquet & Eat Drink Man Woman. 👍🌟🌟🌟🌟
The Assignment is a smart thriller even I was overwhelmed parts of it. 👍🌟🌟🌟
-The Peacemaker - well-directed and well-acted but too many cliches. 👎🏾 ⭐️⭐️ 1/2
-Soul Food - a plateful of fleshed out characters and a heartwarming story. 👍🏾 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
-The Edge - some fine dialogue in a story not worthy of it. 👎🏾 ⭐️⭐️ 1/2
-The Ice Storm - a daring and frank examination of suburban life in the 1970s. 👍🏾 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2
-The Assignment - I haven’t seen it.
Peacemaker was DreamWorks first feature film
Ebert with the Edge spoiler lmao
A movie about a key party. Epic!
Peacemaker was underrated. This could of been Gorge Clooney come back movie from Batman and Robin and made him an action star
The Edge is awful. It’s got that Mamet dialogue that is trying SO hard to be clever that it just comes off as ridiculous
I thought it was a good movie..well made. The Peacemaker is a good movie with a Horrible Actor !
I love The Edge.
you liked it more than i did.
Same here. Probably my favorite survival movie alongside 127 Hours.
Wrong, it was a great movie.
