Thanks Mr. Barton! I have to confess I had to go through your walkthroughs several times to make this video! Unfortunately I could not make a good patch to demo the quadrature switches.
Excellent video, subbed. I received mine but I wasn't aware you could do so much with the two modules alone until I watched Todd's and now your vid. Thanks for the detailed demo!
It would be unwise to agree on this, just doing my best, sharing what I've learned so far. And fortunately it's not a competition. I love the modular community for that.
Thank you for this video. I’m so stoked about these coming out and anxiously waiting for mine to arrive. Your video was the first that I have come across that really gives a lot of “instruction” to the Buchla methods. I’m sure there are more out there, but it feels so mysterious most of the time. Like a secret no one wants you to know. These are the first modules that I have been really excited about in some time. Thanks! 🙏🏻
You're totally welcome and thanks for your comment! I think the Buchla 'visual language' is really clever. I hope you've received your modules by now and sorry for the late reply!
Great video as usual you really explained this well! I’ve been having so much fun with mine already. I’ve had it for a couple days. I heard one person say wiggle IG is a good stand in for the source of uncertainty for now. I find I patch way more cables with these modules and I love it! Lastly thank you for showing that holding the trigger down holds the sustain! I didn’t realize that 😎👍
Thanks, yes I forgot to explain that, but Mr. Todd Barton's videos pointed me to the sustain mode which is cool when you're patching gates instead of triggers/pulses.
Make noise has taken the legacy of Don Buchla till now... Till now is the significant part here :D These things sound amazing and they cost a fraction of DPO + Maths, and even if they do not do all that DOP + Maths do with a wavefolder and another tiptop/buchla module (that with attenueverters) could do a lot of things with a bit more HPs and less money.
I could not agree more and can't wait for the next Buchla/Tiptop modules to arrive. Maths has a few more tricks up its sleeve, but in the end it's 'just' two cycles where the B/T has four and the DPO can't blend between waveforms. On the other side, the B/T function generator doesn't have exponential functions so it's not as snappy as a Maths. But in the end it's the sound that matters and to be honest - and imho - the B/T wins simply because of the Buchla design. It's brilliant.
@@CinematicLaboratory Dpo can blend if you have the demod module but it is a bit module. One of this 258t ossilator with a folder probably take less HP. The true fact is make noise has a strong west coast inspiration for most of its modules. You can always figure out how to reproduce something west-coast-like if you have maths and some other modules. They are very powerful, because Don Buchla inventions were powerful. I'm not saying make noise didn't invent anything, I am a huge fun. But now there is a true alternative and for my next system I definetly going to get these tiptops. I think if you have buchla 257t and 281t you'll beats Maths omnipowerfulness easily! On modulargrid I'm working on a new rack and for a bit more space it costs a half of the one filled with make noise stuff...
great video. If I wasnt' getting two custom 258's and a 281 made for me in buchla format, I'd be getting these modules. but I definitely want to try some of your excellent patching ideas.
These are amazing modules. They do however appear to be unobtainable anywhere. It would be wonderful if they become available again in the future (Tiptop Audio?)
Just heard about these, probably a good thing that they’re unobtainable for me at the moment! The quad function looks like a Maths killer, or companion! Only thing it might be missing is a Both input for modulating attack and decay simultaneously.
I don't think it's a Maths killer. What I miss most is the log/exp that makes a plucky AD. And Maths also adds the AND/OR/INV, the signal inputs and - indeed, the Both input.
Enjoyed the video and I'm impressed by this module, but do the envelopes go pretty slow when voltage is applied to the cv inputs? I haven't been able to find any video of people getting them really slow, or get any idea of how slow they will go.
I can only share what I do know right now. They're not as slow as let's say a Maths cycle and they're not exponential so they aren't as snappy as a Maths either. However. It's a function generator so you can slow down a cycle by adding offsets, and you can shape an envelope with another one to make it exponential. So the 257 Voltage Processor would be important to get what you're looking for. I'd say they belong together. Again, I never tried this before. 259T coming soon, so I'll check it out on that video since I'd definitely want slow moving timbres.
Thanks. I have Maths and plenty of other modules that will do offsets. I think I'm going to get the 281t partly for the number of envelopes/LFOs and I like the 'blending' envelopes function. I'll look forward to the 259t video. I'm into slow moving patches, but if I can get 281t over 30 secs with offsets that will probably work for me.
I just noticed Mr. Todd Barton just served your wishes a few hours ago, doing a four minute rise/fall: ruclips.net/video/v77JMPqZ3eY/видео.html Ah, you've seen it. The Modular World remains a small world 😀
They'll easily go slow enough for me so that's decided a 281t is going in the rack. I may go for the 257 after when I get the next case assuming they are cv controlled, but my Matriarch attenuators should do that job for now. :)
Robert so envious, I’ll never afford these but so many Permutations to explore, you’ll have a Phd in Buchlaonics by time you finished, potential is meltdown, have fun 👍🖐🆒🎶🔱🌀🌀🌀🕸⚡️🌟🌟
I don't have any idea about your budget, but for eurorack standards, these are really affordable modules comparable to the Mutable price range. E.g. the 281T is about 214 euro and the 258T around 200 euro. The originals would cost you about 2K. So these are officially my number one modules for 2022 for now.
@@CinematicLaboratory Indeed. I was so surprised by the price, I thought it was a misprint. TT could have charged half-again or twice what they are charging, and still sold out (imo)
Honestly? 245 + 266. You can't make a longer sequence with two 245's except with clever start/stop programming and you'd need to glue the two sequences together with a voltage processor. Using the 266 gives you tons of options to get the most out of the 245 five steps, and I'd add a quantizer asap and a sequential switch.
Is there a *functional* equivalent of the 281 among the currently available Eurorack modules that isn't a direct copy of Buchla? Does it have the same functionality or maybe is more capable? Or the new Tiptop Audio 281t is just the best option?
I am not sure. Maths, Frapp Tools and Befaco are clearly inspired by it. If I had to pick an 'inspired' design with a completely different implementation I'd say Mutable Instruments Stages and maybe chain two of them to get six AD functions or one big monster function. What I am missing on the 281t is exponential shapes so I'd still pick Maths above the 281t for plucky sounds. Stages can also do a good pluck.
The Doepfer A-143-1 complex envelope generator is probably highly inspired by the Buchla 281. The separate function generators are already normalized together and I think that you can do very interesting stuff with the built-in comparators.
@@mpingo91 Yes, Doepfer has more of these modules that keep under the radar. Another interesting one is the A-149, which contains the core of the Buchla Source of Uncertainty
