Petter Northug Jr. (born 6 January 1986) is a Norwegian former cross-country skier and double Olympic champion. He won a total of 13 World Championship and two Winter Olympic gold medals with 20 medals overall (two gold, one silver and one bronze at the Olympics, 13 gold and three silver at the World Ski Championships), and 18 individual FIS Cross-Country World Cup wins with 13 podium places. He is also the record holder for most stage wins (13) in Tour de Ski. By winning his ninth gold medal in the Nordic World Ski Championships in 4 × 10 km relay in Val di Fiemme 2013 he leveled[citation needed] the achievement of Bjørn Dæhlie who had been the most successful World Champion male skier up to that point.

It was legendary when Northug won the 50 km in Falun. He came back after having a few poor seasons, after crashing his car drunk. But what he did in Falun that year was crazy. Specially the 50km after being so far behind when it was few km left.

Northug is probably the fastest skier of all time when it comes to that last stretch, even faster than Klaebo. There's no way of knowing that though, since they never met each other when both were in their respective primes. Kleabo is tactically way better and cooler than Northug ever was, and Klaebo has also the ultimate body position in downhills which gives him incredible speed when coming in to those last stretches. He just sails away from the rest and rarely needs to sprint as fast as he can. He sits perfectly on his skis with little to none wasted energy, all energy going forward and not lateral.

I think it would be a tight fight between klæbo and northug if they had a sprint finish both in their prime, but the level and quality of todays skiiers are alot higher overall and klæbo are destroying them. So i think maybe klæbo would have won the sprint.

Northug is just 10 years older than Klaebo. They should have been able to race against eachother. Petter retired too soon.
