Dressing up and/or at least to impress even just a little is one of my favorite parts of cruising since it gives me an excuse to do something I don’t do enough of or to really make the whole trip feel like an event worth dressing up for. Plus in my experience, I do notice sometimes that looking extra presentable in general can often get some special attention in regards to service or perks and just being treated with more care especially when paired up with genuine kindness and appreciation. So i know it’s not everyone’s vibe to do so but i like how it can contribute to the aesthetics and environment of the ship and crowd.
Thanks for sharing!! I definitely think it’s a nice part of cruising
I’m doing that this cruise last one I kinda went comfy the whole time. This time my wife and I both are dressing to the nines for elegant nights and also a lil more tropical for day wear.
This video is filling a huge gap on this platform. Before I went on my first cruise this month, I spent a lot of time searching "what to wear on a cruise," but 99% of the results were tips for women, so thank you from men everywhere for this! One suggestion I would like to add is to bring a Navy blue blazer. It can be dressed up or down. It can be worn with a collared shirt or even a t-shirt. That's what I brought to save space. P.S. Your video on cruise essentials was a game changer . There was no way I would have thought of the magnetic clips & hooks without your video. Thanks again for your informative videos!
Thanks for sharing this, and great suggestion for the baby blazer!!
Three things I consider over your list for men: 1) Dress shoes 2) Small clock ( phone is usually charging) 3) Night light for the bathroom, just so as not to interrupted other sleeper for a late night visit to bathroom
This is great! As a guy it is easier to pack for a cruise, but playing dress up is fun! I usually go with a light pair of slacks, (Walmart Ben Hogan golf pants no wrinkle!) and a short sleeve Hawaiian or Guyabera button down shirt. Shoes that pack down small are great, canvas Lugz or Vans, driving mocs, huaraches, espadrilles, all work! Pro tip to avoid wrinkles: use tissue paper in between folds!
Thank you for this content! We are excited to dress up for the MDR and formal nights. As first time cruisers we appreciate all your tips and tricks!
It's nice to see a list for us guy's.
Yes, something for the men. Thanks! Always enjoyed your content, relevant, informative, well-presented, please keep them coming!
Awe thanks!
I would suggest mirrored sunglasses and of course a yellow speedo
Thank you so very much for the list. I had a lot these already covered but I went back and checked off to make sure. And also a suggestion on the shoes, Hey Dude shoes are great for beach wear and some styles can be paired with khakis and a dress shirt. I know you mentioned them but I have used them for casual dressy. And I also bring along a small over the shoulder back for excursions for my wife and I’s papers, money, phones, and sunscreen it helps her feel a little safer knowing I have all of that in a secure spot.
Very well done. Great advice on the dress code. I love going to formal night. I always wear the tux, and on other nights a good suit and coordinated tie. I seem to get better service than the guys who underdress! Always wear a tie. Always.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS!
Agree, cruises are much less formal in the last few years, but being from South Florida, the ships are cold for me and I usually use a sport coat at night!
Thanks so much for the wonderful video, my husband and I enjoyed it. I used so many of your suggestions on our 2 week Panama Canal cruise, and I felt very prepared. Your content is always well thought out and executed. Thank you!
So glad to hear you enjoyed your Panama Canal cruise 👏
Always helpful
So glad you made this video 😊
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Wow this video was so insightful. Downloading your guide now! Thank you so much. Looking forward to our honeymoon cruise! First timers.
Tuxedo shirts. One shirt that does it all!
Terrific video, thanks :)
I’m definitely a casual dresser but I’ve come to love formal nights. It really adds to the excitement and atmosphere of the evening… and I always pack my water shoes 👍
Great to hear your experience!
Thanks for this video I needed this to help my husband pack.
So glad it’s helpful
A very helpful video Illana. Lots of very good ideas. I pack a sweater vest for evening dining as sometimes the AC is cranking and need that little bit of a layer.
The non surge power bar or one on an extension cord are must hsve items. Even the newer ships don't have enough outlets in the room. Glad for that tip on another video for our last cruise .
Happy cruising Illana and hsve a great weekend.
Very true! Thanks for sharing & have a great weekend too
Great vid!
Glad you enjoyed it :)
We will be on the Celebrity Eclipse on May 8th sailing from Honolulu to Vancouver. In cooler climates, I always travel with a Gore-Tex light weight parka (gloves and stocking cap). While we cruise mainly on Celebrity and Royal, I no longer bring a suit or sport coat. I just wear a nice long sleeve dress shirt. Over the past five years, cruising has really become more casual. Since it is so easy to forget a critical item (gym shoes, dress belt, dress shoes, bathing suit, pool sandals, prescriptions, etc), I developed a one-page packing list that includes all items that I want to be sure to pack. I use and update the list every time we travel for a cruise. Another tip that I have found very helpful is that about two weeks before you cruise start organizing and evaluating the items that you will be packing for your cruise. This allows you time to replace any items that are not up to your standard. For example, for our upcoming cruise, I replaced a black dress belt, two casual shirts, luggage straps, and had to request a refill on two critical prescriptions. Regarding critical prescriptions, be sure two take at least double the amount that you will need for the cruise. You never know when your trip may be extended for a variety of reasons. We always cary the extra medications in a different bag that is part of our carry-on luggage. When packing, we always mix our clothes in our two checked bags just in case a bag is late arriving or lost - at least you will have some of your and your partner's clothes. In our carry-on bags, we pack at least one dress outfit each, swim suites, dress shoes, gym clothes, casual clothes, socks, extra shirts, underwear, medications, toiletries, and a jacket. We pack our carry-on luggage with essentials, so if our checked bags do not arrive, while not desirable, we can at least enjoy the cruise. On debarkation day on our last cruise from Ft. Lauderdale, we met two ladies from Canada that had only their carry-on luggage for the 11-night cruise.
Thanks for sharing how you pack!! Great tips
Love my Crocs on cruises, and a pair of water shoes!
Ok so I watched hours of your videos. With that said, thank you sooooo much. Our room
Attendant though we were well seasoned cruisers. When we told him it was our first ever cruise he was very surprised with all the stuff we had. I think we bought almost every one of your must haves. Made for such a well organized room and was just great. We have already booked two more cruises. :-). Thank you again.
Lol, love that!!
Finally a video for use dudes
I have started bringing a power converter to use with the 220 v outlet that is in most of the cabins. It converts the 220 v the 110 v, which provides an additional outlet. I bought the one I use on Amazon. The converter has a 110 v and additional USB ports for charging items.
Always love your content. I bring shorts, underwear, Flippy Floppys, good walking shoes, a couple of t-shirts Dressy looking Dockers and two nice button shirts. Backpack. On occasion a blazer for more formal. Obviously a bathing suit. ALWAYS bring reef safe sunscreen.
Thanks for mentioning the backpack 🙌
I always found it convenient to wear my sport jacket or suit jacket onto the cruise. It provides extra pockets for cruise documents, etc.
Great point 👏
Thank you for a great video for us guys. A good suggestion for nice jeans is Joes Jeans or Hudsons. They are nice fitting, soft and wear like slacks. I love Nordstrom Rack and they are reasonably priced there. Less than two weeks to go until my cruise!
Great tips!! 👏
Thanks for this update!! We haven’t cruised for several years and we are going on Celebrity for the first time…. Was wondering about formal night. My husband isn’t thrilled about packing a suit….. might have to see if he’ll agree to a sports coat….
Great video. Thanks for remembering the men! Btw, you shouldn't take any clothes with an army fatigue pattern, as wearing fatigues is prohibited by civilians in certain countries.
Great point! I probably should have mentioned it in the video
I don’t do formal. Other than adding water shoes and board shorts, I just take my normal clothes
I like to bring a Navy Blue blazer or my light colored linen sport coat. They go with anything.
This video came at the PERFECT time. 2 weeks to go.....
I’m so glad! Have a wonderful cruise!
Yay! Thank you.
My pleasure :)
I just got back from a 10 day cruise. Royal Caribbean.
I packed too many t-shirts, too many dress pants and dress long sleeve shirts. The exact right amount of socks, shorts and underwear. Figure for 1-2 formal nights, the rest is casual. I wore mostly nice pool type shirts for casual. I also only used 1 swim shorts, even know we snorkled twice and swam. I only wore a t-shirt one dinner.
I wore a suit once. I did not need a coat, sweatshirt, or jacket the entire trip. Pack rain coats or a rain parka. It started to sprinkle in St. Maarten waiting to zipline, and we were the only people prepared.
I suggest under packing t shirts. You will have ample opportunity in each port to buy new t shirts.
Pack one hat, your favorite.
Pack 2 pair of sunglasses. My wife's broke on the 2nd day.

Wow so amazing
We just got off the Celebrity Solstice two days ago and my husband said he felt overdressed in his suit and tie on chic night so he wore khakis and a polo the second chic night. Things are definitely less formal now.
Passing onto our group that is going for the men!!!
Yay!! Thanks
Ha ha about "Hey dude shoes"! My hubby bought a pair for our first cruise. He was so surprised that every second man was wearing them! 😊
Lol, seems they’re very comfy!
I have a navy 'suit' similar to your son and hubby, but it consists of my $15 navy blue greg norman pants from costco and my $50 navy blazer from JC Penney. And they look good together! But I rarely bring the blazer anywhere. I mostly wear khaki/olive/gray tracker pants from costco and collared shirts with either nice sneakers or maybe some lightweight driving loafers. And that's about as formal as I get...
That’s perfect. I know sometimes first time cruisers stress about formal nights, but you’re right, this is absolutely fine 👏
Can’t wait till may 15 I’m going on RC
Tnx. Leaving May 5, 2023 Majestic Princess to Alaska
Enjoy!!
Question. We love your videos have been with you since day one. We are going on a cruise in June on royal Caribbean. Can we take a fan and what kind? Thank you for all that you do.
Taking my first cruise in September. This will be a major test of my patience. I don’t appreciate dress codes in general, less so on a vacation I paid A LOT of money for.
Don’t stress, you really don’t have to adhere to strict dress codes these days on most cruise lines
Thank you for your very informative and helpful videos. I’m wondering if Birkenstock sandals are allowed in dining rooms on Celebrity, or are they in the same category as flip-flops?
Thank you. 126 days until Ovation of the Seas!!!
Awesome!! 👏
Great video! But, it is really geared towards the new cruiser. After all our cruises, we are pretty well set on what to take.
Absolutely! I get a lot of requests for men’s packing tips & new cruisers definitely need more info :)
We are going on a Panama Canal cruise on Carnival Conquest this November.
What would be appropriate dress for weather during that time frame?
Could you do a video on PanMa Canal cruising?
Thank you for the great tips! Going on our first cruise 8/13/2023..NCL JOY.
NY to Bermuda. My husband & 16 yr old son. NCL is not very informative on dress code. Any info would certainly help!
Not packing a silk shirt shirt and shorts for my Alaska cruise this year will be a big change for me. Looking forward to that video for suggestions.
I’ll definitely share what we pack & wear :)
@@LifeWellCruised Water shoes are a must as I did the same excursion in Jamaica. I bought the water shoes after I got home.
My husband always takes a tux.
Please show things about Disney cruises
For the main dining room, dinner: If my hubby wore a collard button up, with a nice pair of cargo or khaki pants, can he get away with a black pair of new balance sneakers or do they have to be shoes?
One of my t-shirts for pool side caused issues. "I am the Captain" talk about a backfire! Passengers approached me nonstop. The crew and bartenders thought it was funny. I wore it to bed from that day on
Haha that’s cute
@@LifeWellCruised 61 with a beard, I probably did look like the Captain.
Japan please❤
In the main dining it was the foot wear was the issue, due to the flooring. and if a glass was accidently broken, and all the traces of glass not swept up.
Good point
What about a trans pacific cruise on HAL from Auckland NZ to Vancouver
How hot is it on the ocean on a Mexico cruise day/night? Leaving Tampa beginning of June.
On formal nights I wear a dress shirt and a tie, a nice pair of dress slacks and dress shoes, and a nice V-Neck sweater. I don't do suits on cruises anymore. It's so much easier to pack and much more comfortable. Btw, one night at the show in the ship's theater I was horrified to see a guy wearing his pajama pants and bedroom slippers. Ridiculous
Thanks for sharing. Lol, funny story
Mens question , formal night or dining can I wear suit but rugged shoes? Not necessary black or formal shoes?though I’m wearing suit top blazer and long sleeves and dark pants more like a modern cocktail mens dress…I just dnt want to bring one shoes just for one of two formal use.thanks
What about national dress? Formal clothing for a Nigerian is not a suit but is still very impressive.
What about transatlantic to Rotterdam?
Im going Dec (14 days) 2023 in the caribean and looking for ideas
Lol right as I'm packing for a cruise
Haha happy packing!
Have you ever gone on the Carnival Dream Ship if so any tips for this ship? We also wanted to say thank you for the fantastic videos tips and tricks for cruising. Your channel has helped us tremendously.
No, unfortunately I haven’t been. I’m so glad the videos have been helpful. You can expect casual and fun on Carnival, although you can also feel comfortable dressing up a little if you enjoy it :)
@@LifeWellCruised thank you so very much I truly appreciate you. We will let you know how it goes we are sailing in October
YES, ALWAYS PACK A HOODIE OR LIGHT JACKET !!! I didn’t ONE TIME on a Halloween cruise out of Galveston,TX.. It was downright chilly. I had to buy one on the ship. And I grew up in Texas just didn’t remember it being cold that time of year. ❤
It does get breezy on this ship, good point
I’ll be on a Halloween cruise this year, out of Galveston (Oct 30 to Nov 4). Fortunately my nice clothes double as a (vampire) costume, and it includes vest and jacket.
Cargo pants/shorts. Everywhere. Every day. :-)
Two pair lasts the whole cruise. I pack one tropical shirt and buy more as needed at port. It saves packing room.
What about kilts?
Thanks for the information! We’re going November NCL and although it’s only my 2nd cruise I don’t quite feel I’m an expert 😂.
So question, do you need magnetic hooks etc to hang items since space is limited? If so, which do you recommend?
Nvrmind I found a link through your channel! Thanks 😊

It depends on the cruise ship
@@LifeWellCruised oh I see got it 😀
Hi. We are going on our first cruise in February. My question is do I have to take my passport on excursions to get back on the cruise ship? Or my birth certificate? Thanks
It depends on the port & recommendations by the cruise line. Most of the time a drivers licence with photo is great
Walmart brand sunscreen says its Reef Safe. I'm already getting items ready for our cruise in September.
Perfect 👏
Will crocks work ok for water shoes?
I’m not sure they wouldn’t be slippy on the bigger rocks
Given all the items you suggest taking on a cruise, I’m curious to know what size and how many pieces of luggage you bring on your cruises.
That's our problem. It's not what to take, it's how to pack it. By the time I pack a suit, nice casual clothes, day clothes (and pack them all with minimal wrinkling), 2 or 3 pairs of pairs of shoes, a toiletry bag and 2 or 3 other items, one suitcase is just about full. We have watched multiple videos (compression bags, etc) and it's still nearly impossible to go with just one suitcase. I should mention that we are going on our first cruise to Alaska in late May.
I usually bring a 24” suitcase and a carry on. As I mention on occasion, I don’t bring everything I may show or talk about, as each person should evaluate what they need for themselves:)
@@TFTO1973 Alaska is tough. I’ll be trying to have it packed in a good carry on luggage plus suitcase 24”. Wear items more than over, take advantage of laundry services (there can be a bag special)
@@LifeWellCruised Copy that. And a big thanks for all the information you provide. Much appreciated.
I have an Alaska cruise with Celebrity coming up in a month and was wondering how dressy the Evening Chic is in that region vs other locales.
On Evening Chic nights you will see the complete spectrum of dress from tuxes and long gowns to dressy smart casual clothes.. Shorts are not allowed in the Main Dining Room. My observation over a number of Celebrity cruises is that people tend to dress up more on the first Evening Chic night (normally on the second day - not always). On our last Alaska cruise with Celebrity, I did take a sport coat (mainly for being warmer) for Evening Chic nights. I think I wore it for the first Evening Chic night and just wore a dress shirt for the second Evening Chic night. My wife normally wears black slacks and a frilly dressy top on Evening Chic. We have found the dress attire for Evening Chic does not change much based on locales. The Evening Chic approach allows cruisers to chose how dressy they want to make Evening Chic nights.
Thanks. I just didn’t want to be overdressed. Sport jacket works for me.
Actually less dressy :)
We sailed Celebrity to Alaska last June, saw a few tuxes, but overall Alaska cruises seem to be more casual than the other Celebrity cruises we’ve been on (mostly Bermuda and Carib)
Hi everyone, can I bring my hair dry?
When the crew stops wearing tux shirts and bow ties, and the officers don't wear their dress whites, we won't dress up for formal night. My husband does alternate between a tux shirt & bow tie, and a dress shirt and regular tie with his dark blue suit. So he's not totally in a tux, and only bri gs one suit.
I’m sure he looks fabulous! I still see many men in suits and some in tuxedos, they look great
I absolutely hate dressing up. I never dress up.
Great Info as always but I missed the NCL dress code for Dress up night? What a wonderful family you have. In my next life I want a lady just like you. Don't worry I'm not flirting with you. I can see your happily married with great sons. But you are fantastic. Wonderful magnificent personality.
It’s basically optional, and has called Norwegian Night Out. Some people may dress up (not formal) & others don’t. Since it’s freestyle it’s ok either way :). Thanks for your kind words
This will complement my other post but it does discuss dress codes. It is cruise line specific but could help to explain the different dress codes.

This kind of works for masculine women as well. Don’t forget about us. Thanks for the video.
You forgot the most important thing about married couples and Packing for men.....ask the WIFE. You might not want to dress but, the wife wants to dress. Silly to see a women lookingvery chic but not their partner. Also remember gentlemen, a happy wife is a great life! wifes like to be corrdinated with there mate.
bro everyone don't like that style so like what is this vid?
Not a chance in Hell will you get my husband to dress that way !
I'm not dressing to impress anyone. I'm dressing comfortable which means the clothing I wear everyday.
I prefer not to dress up
