BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on RUclips or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area. This upload features materials protected by the Fair Use guidelines of Section 107 of the Copyright Act. Those were the good ole days. No Vietnam yet, JFK was still alive, and no one knew who the Beatles were. Yet.

Nothing ruins a vintage Twilight Zone episode than cigarette ads. 😣

Seeing how that’s what took Rod away from us at only 50 years old.

I get nostalgic but these were not the gold ole days. Can you imagine being in that period? No home computers, no internet, watch TV shows on black and white sets, no Spotify or you-tube, just the radio. Men had a lot of heart attacks because the importance of a low-fat diet was just beginning to be understood. Yes you could buy a house for $8000 but 60 years later that house would now need expensive repairs like new plumbing. On the other hand college was nearly free and Calif. was really the golden state. Gas was 30 cents a gallon.

The average salary in 1961 was $5,700. So 30 cents then will be $3.16 per gallon today.
