- The southern half of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is situated between Fort Lauderdale and the Village of Sea Ranch Lakes, Florida. The entire town is located on a long, narrow barrier island separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway, stretching approximately one-half dozen blocks to the Atlantic Ocean. The main industry is tourism; the town has many hotels and motels used by visitors, especially during the winter; many of its older hotels and buildings reflect mid-century modern architecture design. Recognized by the Florida Legislature in 2016 for its near-shore coral reefs and efforts to promote scuba diving, the town is known as Florida's Beach Diving Capital. With a coral reef just 100 yards offshore, the town is a popular spot for scuba divers, especially just south of Anglin's Pier.
On the ocean at the east end of Commercial Boulevard is Anglin's Fishing Pier, named after Lauderdale-by-the-Sea's first mayor, Melvin I. Anglin. The town is home to SS Copenhagen, a 19th-century British steamship that wrecked in 25 feet of water in May 1900 after striking a coral reef. The historic site is a Florida archaeological underwater preserve and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town doubled in size in 2001 when it annexed the unincorporated Intracoastal Beach Area to the north. Even though the town's permanent population is 6,056, it nearly doubles when snowbirds and tourists come here to spend the winter.
Hurricane Nicole made an unusual November landfall in Florida, bringing damaging coastal flooding, high winds and heavy rain to some parts of the state that were also affected six weeks prior by Hurricane Ian. Nicole was just the fourth November hurricane to landfall in the mainland U.S. in records dating to the mid-19th century, the first to do so since Hurricane Kate struck the Panhandle in 1985. Despite its Category 1 winds, Nicole's large size lead to damaging impacts from coastal flooding. The combination of Nicole's large circulation and high pressure to its north drove onshore winds that persisted before, and even after Nicole's storm surge moved through.This persistent wind produced large, pounding waves and coastal flooding along the Southeast coast from Florida's Atlantic beaches to the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina that in some locations happened over three or more high tides. Hardest hit was a part of Florida Atlantic coast which also was ravaged by pounding surf, high winds and heavy rain from Hurricane Ian six weeks before Nicole.

God you hear some extreme weather in the States. What surprises me is that there are still any plam trees left on the coast of Florida. Still it does look like paradise when the sun is out.
Fortunately, I live in the warm part of the states. Grew up in the northern cold and when I was financially able, I made a beeline south. If I want to go skiing, it's just a plane ride away. Thanks for watching! 👍😎

Thanks for watching Dave. It is all part of living in this area. Fortunately southeast Florida doesn't get landfall of these hurricanes very often. Usually they go north up the coast or into the Gulf of Mexico. The jet-stream and the neighboring islands tend to deflect them. And, when they don't well...everyone's insurance rates go up.

What a horrible post-disaster picture. My country experiences many typhoons every year due to its geographical location, and such disasters are common in my country, but looking at these things, I still feel that the power of nature is very powerful. 😊😊
Hurricane (Typhoon) season is from June 1st through November 30th in Florida, USA. Fortunately, most of them are not strong enough to cause major damage. Thanks for watching 👍😊

Thanks my friend for the comment and for watching. There was property damage along the coast. Tornadoes were also spawned. One of them ripped the roof off a condo building a few miles away. I do not recall about fatalities.

This was minimal damage compared to other natural disasters. I had to "google" 1963 to see what transpired. Are you referring to the Vajont Dam in Northern Italy?

Thank you very much! 👍Fortunately it was just a category 1 so the wind speeds weren't as bad as the category 3 storms we went through years ago. This time it was mostly the coastal areas that were pounded as well as a tornado that touched down and destroyed some condo buildings. Lots of beach erosion as well. Sounds like a disaster movie 🤣
