Superb...? Informed...?? Polite...??? Clever...???? Cox gives you " hope for the future..."...???? How old are you please...? Seriously, how old...? When you've answered this simple question, we can move on from there concerning your rather naive comment...Thanks.
Fail to see what relevance your obviously childish comment has. But hey, perhaps you didn't actually watch this or appreciate the importance of making science interesting.
Far from 'Standing on the shoulders of giants', modern 'big bang' supporters are dancing on their graves.. "What we observe is not nature in itself but nature exposed to our method of questioning" (Werner Heisenberg) "For the time being we have to admit that we do not possess any general theoretical basis for physics which can be regarded as its logical foundation." (Einstein, 1940) "All these fifty years of conscious brooding have brought me no nearer to the answer to the question, 'What are light quanta?' Nowadays every Tom, Dick and Harry thinks he knows it, but he is mistaken. … I consider it quite possible that physics cannot be based on the field concept, i.e., on continuous structures. In that case, nothing remains of my entire castle in the air, gravitation theory included, [and of] the rest of modern physics." (Albert Einstein, 1954) "I don't like it, and I'm sorry I ever had anything to do with it." (Erwin Schrodinger talking about Quantum Physics) "Some things that satisfy the rules of algebra can be interesting to mathematicians even though they don't always represent a real situation." (Richard P. Feynman) "Mathematics has the completely false reputation of yielding infallible conclusions. Its infallibility is nothing but identity. Two times two is not four, but it is just two times two, and that is what we call four for short. But four is nothing new at all. And thus it goes on and on in its conclusions, except that in the higher formulas the identity fades out of sight." (Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe) "Today's scientists have substituted mathematics for experiments, and they wander off through equation after equation, and eventually build a structure which has no relation to reality." (Nikola Tesla) "I wish, my dear Kepler, that we could have a good laugh together at the extraordinary stupidity of the mob. What do you think of the foremost philosophers of this University? In spite of my oft-repeated efforts and invitations, they have refused, with the obstinacy of a glutted adder, to look at the planets or Moon or my telescope. ... In questions of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual." (Galileo Galilei, 1600) "We are to admit no more causes of natural things than such as are both true and sufficient to explain their appearances." (Sir Isaac Newton, Principia: The system of the world)
The first time I saw him on the tele I thought "what an insecure, man." It was something about the way he speaks that bugged me. Now, however, I find exactly that the cause for my appreciating of him: he speaks eloquently, calmly, and always as if it's been written and practiced beforehand. (Obviously this speech was, but I mean in general: any talk- or panel show he visits, he speaks clearly and interestingly.) My respect grows with every footage of this man I view.
As he read that "best case scenario" from the Daily Mail, I so wanted him to add the phrase "Dogs and Cats living together, Total Pandemonium" into it. I would.
How does homosexuality relate in any way to acceptance or denial of the theory of evolution? What exactly would you refer to as being faith in regards to studying and understanding evolution?
He has a gift of explaining physics so your average human can understand and yes that’s me and I can listen to him all day.his tv programs were absolutely brilliant
When I was younger, a wonderful 'yooman' by the given name of Carl Sagan captivated me. We lost him too soon, but thank goodness we still have another 'yooman' that has that same wonderous way of explaining incredibly complex things in a manner that can enthuse those of us that do not have the mathematical skills required to be scientists but really wish we had. I would exchange my artistic skills for mathematics in an instant.....if only I could.
Who would have thought that the Daily Mail was capable of such insanely exaggerated hyperbole?? I mean as a rule this "newspaper" is about as fair and balanced as Rupert's Fox "News"...
I'm not talking about either; Brian said that the Higgs field, which occupies all of space, contains about 10 to the 37 joules of energy per cubic meter...that's not "too small"; 10 to the 37 joules is a lot of energy, especially per cubic meter...no matter what the source (it would still be a lot even if it were from microwave background radiation). You're not wrong to say the energy from background radiation is too small, though, but I just wasn't talking about that.
You made my point perfectly my friend. Nothing is ever that simple and to move forward you need to have an open mind because what you can experience you will not believe. If it is then your passion to take it to pieces to see what makes it tick then you will be able to do that to your hearts content. Heart is the key word here, not physical mind which only receives an is not enabled for safe perception. Why are two large smooth pyramids on the sea floor below the Bermuda triangle? Peace and Love
have just finished making paper plane it goes really good in the living room, it's proto type with (the since modified elongated wing convex) landed nose first in the toilet. Do you think there is any merit in using the hair dryer to repair it?
to conclude the last senteney is to say that for all further things to be discovered, we must hold together and overcome because there won't be enough capacity regarding science within a single nation to achiev great. We will work together and become what we have dreamed of, or we don't and that ist where the nightmare took it's beginning.
I enjoyed this speech and agree with most of what he said, although I think that the statistics about tertiary education that he cited are totally irrelevant. If the life expectancy of people with tertiary education is higher, I expect that has a lot to do with their lifestyle (job, income, etc) when compared to less educated people who earn less doing physically more exhausting or dangerous jobs. While it's good to promote science, "ordinary" people and jobs are just as important to society.
From the speech: “…the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the physical sciences” “…we live in a condensate" "….....how much energy is contained in a higgs field……..more than the energy output of the sun in thousand years per meter cube of space, which should blow the universe to bits in a fraction of seconds, it obviously doesn´t. We don´t know the answer to this question…” Could the answer be found in the mathematical methods?
Just because you're an idiot that is trying to extract truth from the media doesn't mean the rest of us are. Don't generalize humans by saying "we" & "us". You're just part of an useless percentage that wastes time entertaining unreliable sources of media. Don't include everyone just so you feel better about being duped.

the way RE is taught in early education resembles basic philosophy and ethics. these ideas are very good for developing empathetic minds. I do agree that some parts of the courses should be toned down but in general RE is still a good thing for young people.
i disagree with his comparison to “alternative medicine”; Truth is, many practices get lumped-in to that category; medicine is quite a dicey and political arena, and I don’t think the pedestal of “science” holds-up in its case!
take acupuncture as an example. some consider it quackery, others - even insurance companies - consider it legitimate & I say the jury’s still out to say the least regarding it...

@@fluentpiffle I don't quite understand your point. But using Einstein (didn't believe Quantum mechanics was real) and Isaac Newton (Spent more time on actual MAGIC of his religion than physics) are not good "Gotchas".
He's correct, it is not acceptable to promote bad science. For example, it is not acceptable to say that heating up a diamond in your hand will instantaneously affect every particle in the universe.
If you mean the cosmic background radiation, the energy there is too small, and if you mean the "virtual particles", then they're not energy like electricity, they're particles that come in an out of existence and can't be used..
yes but i think its extremely rare for anything new to be discovered in a school. philosophy is not a subject limited to the past, it helps explain human nature which like it or not is going to be around for the majority of the time we are around.
Higgs name has been taken everywhere but what about the 5 other persons associated with it?Also Abdus Salam was the first person to use Higgs mechanism back in 60's.But what about the father of boson, the legendary Bengali physicist from India who proposed the idea in 1924 but certainly he had nothing to do with this discovery of Higgs particle.
I was raised a fundamentalist christian and was forced into a faith school when I started asking basic questions about obviously flawed notions. Science will be incredibly likely to change in the next few decades, and the next few that follows and this is nothing negative or surprising. We adapt to the best existing evidence without making facual claims of the unknown. If you can seperate your claim from an invented claim by evidence or logic please share it with the world.
What is the issue with rubbing people the wrong way? When I am wrong I would much rather take insult and stand corrected than being left alone as well as the consequences of my incorrect information for myself and others. This is not a question up for vote nor what emotions are involved. Either it's correct or simply not.
I favor that idea. It could be formulated in a different way: If you will not believe science that you don't understand, you only get access to the science that you understand. So in the event that you are an aviation engineer, you can fly, but you can't use cars or medicine etc...
The good science of today will be the bad science of tomorrow! This is an invitation to see an artist theory on the physics of ‘time’ as a physical process!
The world would be a better place if more people gave a damn about what is actually true instead of what is more comfortable to them. Once you realise something is wrong you can make an effort to change that. Also what is the method to avoid your classification for being a smart ass? ''Well evidence shows us that your position requires a complete ignorance of all existing evidence but don't worry, we'll censor all factual claims that contradict it'' Or ''You're wrong and here's why''

Sorry but that's a misunderstanding. Theory does not mean less proven than law, and law does not mean proven. They are just 2 different types of things, theory meaning more explanation and law more description. For instance gravity is NOT a theory. There are theories of gravity, and there are laws of gravity. However our current most accurate model of gravity is a theory of gravity, whereas we have laws of gravity which we know are incorrect.

The recent count of articles that support human driven climate change was something like 95%. You can check that by just searching the main scientific journals and doing a count!
Global warming is more pronounced at the poles, so a one degree increase over the planet may result in a 4 or 5 degree increase at the poles. While the temp near the equator stays roughly the same. Some regions may get colder as a result of global warming, as melting polar ice results in desalination affecting warm water currents in the oceans. I don't know for a fact the planet is/isn't warming. But isn't it better to do something about it than not. If we're fussing over nothing then so be it.
Those things simply raise questions about the mechanics of the thing, there is absolutely no doubt in the process of evolution. For example, we didn't evolve from rhesus monkeys, we share a common ancestor with them, there's a massive difference. Also we understand mitochondrial DNA quite well and I've never once heard it used as a refutation of evolution, in fact, it's evidence of the very thing.
"27% more tertiary educated people vote than non-tertiary educated people" the cynical amongst us could argue that if indeed there was a genuine purpose that a larger number of people were being prevented from tertiary education (an easily factualy provable point from both applicants in 2011 and far moreso in 2012) and if it followed that 'someone' benifits from keeping people uneducated and not voting... I don't think that's all that difficult to fathom to be quite honest. No Boat, No Vote!
Believing in conspiracy theories and denying facts which contradict deeply held beliefs is unfortunately a very annoying part of human nature. I just hope one day we can find a solution.

I haven't laughed so much since he told the joke about "dark matter and energy really exists." I never re-tell that joke well. I always accidently call it "super-magical" dark matter and energy that you can't find on Earth.
Of course it's not perfect, it is not about having all the answers. It's about presenting the most informed answers based on testable evidence. It doesn't favor any specific result, just the correct one. Human experience is nice but it is a very unreliable form of evidence. When alternative medicine for example works we just call it... medicine. If it requires belief to function then it is a placebo effect. You can use the word truth in many ways, science deals with factual truth, not makebelief

I like professor Cox, but I have to take exception to one part of his speech. If you ignore the economic consequences of what some idiotic eco-terrorist's are proposing we do to solve the warming problem then we ignore that fact that when money starts getting tighter there will be way less to spend on scientific research and higher education and that won't help at all. To solve the problem I believe we need to put as much research money and resources into alternative energy's as we can until we have come up with ways to power the world and economies with hurting the environment or the economies of the world. If we blindly jump at every new gimmick that is supposed to solve the problem and then implement them, which in a lot of cases makes things worse or destroy economies with crazy overreaching regulations we just add to the negative views of science and hence make things harder to solve. I just ask for common sense here. I am not saying the LHC is a waste of money, but those billions could have been spent trying to make batteries better so windmill generators are more effective, or solar panels better than 15 or 20% effective. Spend wisely and solve it, we have the ability.
Decisions regarding climate research aren't influenced in the slightest by your 'eco-terrorists'. Decisions are made by science advisory panels brimming with scientists, so you don't really make a lot of sense there. The billions spent on the LHC will eventually (and they have already) show a side more 'practical'. Offshoots of projects of such scale have always proved useful in the 'practical' sciences. Also, you can't put a price on knowledge, the knowledge resulting from the LHC may cost us billions, but in one way or another, future science will be so dependent on the discoveries made there that it'll be seen as a great deal. Again, this is something that has occurred over and over again throughout history.
Based on the reactions of the comedians to Brian's science monologues during QI and 8 out of 10 cats, I'd say Dara is the outlier. Besides, he majored in physics. He's not just a comedian.
Or it could've been that whatever the real doctor was giving you was just having a bad effect. A problem with the alternative medicine crowd is they tend to point to flaws in scientific medicine as somehow a support for their own beliefs. Doctors are human and they often get things wrong. But the whole point about the scientific community is that over time it does self-correct itself and make progress. Whereas homeopathy is the same as it was 150 years ago.
Children and students are taught nothing about politics then thrown into a world run by politicians.. I don't think RE is up there in terms of life skills. In my opinion basic science should be taught then that can branch off to what field of science you would like to learn physics, chemistry, zoology etc .. People learn about RE whilst studying science so i think a whole lesson on religious education is unnecessary.

I wouldn't try to use actual logic with these sort of people. as you can tell you can't have a civil and intellectual conversation with them because they take everything to heart and when you prove them wrong resort to insults.
I could listen to Professor Brian Cox talk all day....his ideas are powerful, empirical and well-organized....
Agreed, I've watched all his documentaries more than once and I find him easy to listen to and learn from.
Superb. Informed. Polite. Clever. Gives me hope for the future.
But hey, perhaps you didn't actually watch this or appreciate the importance of making science interesting.
and you're an idiot, presumably a failure and cannot spell to save your life.

The first time I saw him on the tele I thought "what an insecure, man." It was something about the way he speaks that bugged me. Now, however, I find exactly that the cause for my appreciating of him: he speaks eloquently, calmly, and always as if it's been written and practiced beforehand. (Obviously this speech was, but I mean in general: any talk- or panel show he visits, he speaks clearly and interestingly.)
My respect grows with every footage of this man I view.
"Faith based aviation doesn't work" That should be a bumper sticker!
prof. brian cox is a legend, a very inspiring guy
Brian Cox introduced me to Carl Sagan, so in one fell swoop i gained two passionate, wise, and unforgettable inspirations to my life
Brian Cox is one of a kind...he really is the rock star of physics. Anything he tells me I believe.
This man is fantastic, Britain needs more like him, the world needs more like him.
As he read that "best case scenario" from the Daily Mail, I so wanted him to add the phrase "Dogs and Cats living together, Total Pandemonium" into it. I would.
MASS HYSTERIA!
I actually laughed out loud. Thanks for making my day that much brighter :)
I would exchange my artistic skills for mathematics in an instant.....if only I could.
it's amazing how he can communicate all of this so calmly how is this superpower possible
Who would have thought that the Daily Mail was capable of such insanely exaggerated hyperbole??
I mean as a rule this "newspaper" is about as fair and balanced as Rupert's Fox "News"...
Now that, was well said.
Psy0psAgent Many thanks, I'm glad you agree..
Except that Dara isn't from the UK. :P
have just finished making paper plane it goes really good in the living room, it's proto type with (the since modified elongated wing convex) landed nose first in the toilet. Do you think there is any merit in using the hair dryer to repair it?
Does anyone have a link to the OECD report he mentions? I've looked but i can't find it.
Does anyone have a link to the prospectus read at 15:30 thanks
to conclude the last senteney is to say that for all further things to be discovered, we must hold together and overcome because there won't be enough capacity regarding science within a single nation to achiev great. We will work together and become what we have dreamed of, or we don't and that ist where the nightmare took it's beginning.
Watching in 2021… when scientists around the world are being cancelled…. What IRONIC! Who would have thought 💭
the correct identification of cause and effect in statistical research is very important and I have my doubts with a few statements made by Brian.
"Reiki flight mechanics" hahhha, i'm gonna use that one.
Actually, energy conservation follows naturally from the assumption of homogeneity of time and the Noether's theorem.
this wonderful young man gives us hope for the future of celebrity
he is so worth celebrating...
He was really funny here. Great results from the LHC indeed!
When did you buy the video camera for this?.. 1957?!!
From the speech:
“…the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the physical sciences”
“…we live in a condensate"
"….....how much energy is contained in a higgs field……..more than the energy output of the sun in thousand years per meter cube of space, which should blow the universe to bits in a fraction of seconds, it obviously doesn´t. We don´t know the answer to this question…”
Could the answer be found in the mathematical methods?
Just oprn video to see him... Just see him - and HAPPYNESS shining inside. Amazing person!
I was in a hall with Brian an hour ago in Melbourne listening to him talk about exactly this :)
09:58 - There's a reason we don't use Reiki to fix aero engines.
Classic!! 🤣
That was awesome, I just came across Brian's talk. And yes, so funny... "faith based aviation"
I presume the second one is false vacuum collapse but what is the first one?
We used to have Religion, now we have media to talk complete bollocks to us and tell us all to believe it.

He's correct, it is not acceptable to promote bad science. For example, it is not acceptable to say that heating up a diamond in your hand will instantaneously affect every particle in the universe.
A speech that should be given here... :)
I love that quote at the end.
Only history can be taught in a history lesson. New things can be discovered with science and i would like to encourage it more in schools.
He's bringing science to the public and that's a good thing everything is physics
Thats a real shame. Regrets are such a sad thing to have :(
Too true. His icon suggests he's beyond saving on many levels.

I didn’t think he could get through a minute without mentioning the large hedron collider
And it is himself who is saying it!
So what's a gravity wave ?
Absolutely brilliant. What a dude

AH! Sorry, for some reason there was no "show comment" button, so I just assumed. Good, that makes much more sense.

Please elaborate.

A world they endlessly would wander around lost in.
And that of course since the satellite navigation systems will not be there to aid them.
Professor Cox said, We were in a mess in 1899,,, if we (the UK) hadn't won in 1812. Huh? I guess he meant to say 1912 as in WWI.
WW1 started in ended in 1918. I'm guessing the reference is when we were at war with America over Canada.
What he really means is it is not acceptable to have a view that is different from the mainstream or different to what i believe.
Words fail me.
Brilliant video! Thanks!!
Actually what worse is promoting bad education, but some people in the IOP are not willing to listen.
I haven't laughed so much since he told the joke about "dark matter and energy really exists."
I never re-tell that joke well.
Could you give some example about what he is wrong? i have seen many of his video in youtube and havent seen any missinformation in them. it could be that i have missed something.
He should talk. He's just published a book that misrepresents the contents of quantum mechanics.
potpourri. It's dried flowers etc. that are used for scent.
Brian Cox really is a superstar. He is so common sensical. More people need to listen to him.!
More people should learn how to think for themselves..

Theory isn't the same as fact.
A theory may be correct, or it may be incorrect. The term "theory" doesn't divulge which.
You've made it even plainer in your comments that we do not agree nor evaluate claims in an equal manner. I've sent you a response comment. I hope you see my views and strive for some unpopularity for the greater good.
Best of luck to you
Ben

cox you always knock philosophy...but if everyone studied basic philosophy in school, they would have a much better understanding and appreciation on the scientific method.

"History abundantly shows that people's views of the universe are bound up with their views of themselves and of their society. The debate in cosmology has implications far beyond the realm of science, for it is a question of how truth is known. How these questions are answered will shape not only the history of science, but the history of humanity." (Eric Lerner, 1992)
I wouldn't try to use actual logic with these sort of people. as you can tell you can't have a civil and intellectual conversation with them because they take everything to heart and when you prove them wrong resort to insults.
