    Always excited to watch the videos where you walk through modules I’m considering… your demos are so wonderful in the way they stand alone as a good performance with patch notes that add value and context… gives a much clearer picture of how things would work musically for me!

      @@CinematicLaboratory I totally agree! one thing that stands out for me is the sound quality ... do you have any recommendations here?

      @@thesaltirecade2258 Since I can't compare the Fumana with the Verbos Bark Filter or the Sputnik I can't compare it to those. However, I can compare it with the original sound coming in and how it compares to normal filters. I'd say the frequency bands can introduce or emphasize ringing sounds which are not obvious in the source, so it doesn't always sound better. You need to find a balance that works. But that also applies to normal filters. Fumana's build quality is amazing, I suspect top quality parts have been used. I can't really hear them, but they provide good faith and trust. I am aware this doesn't really help...

      @@CinematicLaboratory haha no this is very informative. thanks a lot! but I meant more the quality in your videos overall strikes me as really good. I feel it has depth. what interface do you use, if I may ask? do you do any post-processing?

    • @CinematicLaboratory

      @@thesaltirecade2258 Ah, got it! Well, this may come as a surprise but most of my recordings are straight from the modular with no extra processing except maybe some glue compression and a brick wall limiter. So no creative plugins, only corrective stuff. I use Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 and Ableton Live. No fancy A/D converter. I guess I am a big fan of 'trust your ears' and 'less is more' . So my 'secret' is doing close to nothing when the recording is fine. If it needs corrections I use Ableton's stock EQ . When I recorded too loud I can use Izotope RX to 'declip' the recording and I use Soothe 2 when there are too much ugly frequencies in my recordings.

    Awesome! I love my Fumana: took a long time to get one - it's not the cheapest module out there... - but it's one of the most versatile modules in my system. Absolutely amazing and exceptional build quality.

    Such an incredible variety of Sounds you made with that Large Module... still amazed that you created actual "softer" Soundscapes out of those lovely Harsh and Loud N.E. Modules you were using with the Fumana Module. Just a Filter mainly? At first I thought it was a new Sequencer you bought. Never thought that long Module with multiple sliders could be a Filter!💡🧨🎵🔥🐵❗

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  2 года назад +1

      I don't think 'just a filter' doesn't do justice to the module, it's a spectral processor, parametric equalizer and fixed filter bank. And a super powerful envelope follower. I've seen DivKid doing a low pass gate with it. I bet it can escape its original design with some clever patching too. But it can definitely be just a filter too!

  • @fosferus

    i got the sputnik one recently, i love it. it lacks the tilt, but sounds really good when sounds are driven in at high gain. these filter banks excel at tearing apart sounds for further processing, including feeding back in on itself.
    i might've tried this, but the power requirements would have been over recommended limits and just recently upgraded my power supply. btw, which led cables are those? analog solutions?

    • @Space_pulse
      @Space_pulse 2 года назад

      I also went with the Sputnik. I considered the Frap Tools, but the two extra hp ended up being kind of a dealbreaker in my case, and I kinda prefer the Sputnik flavor, especially when pinged. Frap tools is also a bit more modern and throaty, wasn’t as much into it. Fumana does a way better job as a vocoder, though, and the tilt is great, probably a bit more versatile in the long run. Can’t go wrong with either, though.

    It's quite large and expensive. There are similar options like Verbos Bark Filter and Sputnik Spectral Processor. Are there any recommenendations which is better, more useful etc.?

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  2 года назад +1

      I only know the Fumana (a bit). All are inspired by the Buchla Spectral Processor but every reincarnation has its own special features. The Verbos has 12 bands and also do vocoding. I feel (not sure) the Sputnik is closer to Buchla's orginal design. Clearly, Fumana is the most expensive but you just can't go wrong with any of the three. Unfortunately I can't build a solid recommendation on what I know.

    Hi Robert an amazing module, presented superbly as usual, do you think this would be beneficial to EDM type Live situation, might be wise investment but about no 6 on list at moment
    Many thanks for your output👍🆒🎶

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  2 года назад

      Anything that brings movement and development to a patch can be beneficial to any performance. I don't think I can stand a raw Strega for five minutes, but running it through Fumana gives you plenty of options to make a great patch and play it for hours. However, using a powerful filter (e.g. QPAS or Blades) and FX will also get you there. I think Fumana may be too big for a typical live case unless it's the heart of your show.

      @@CinematicLaboratory thanks Robert I already have Q-Pas so half solved also when I saw cost£830.00 here🇬🇧bit off putting and think I can get some live control with Tesseract Sweet Sixteen cv that can alter output sounds for live use, it’s still a headache anyway, keep rearranging my case logically, which never works, always in Flux👍🆒🎶

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  2 года назад

      Yes, it's very big. And yet I can't imagine a design with 16 bands that can be small. This really makes you appreciate the design of the original Buchla 296E with the touch controls. Buchla also realized it would be big and he totally nailed it. But that's a $3,400 module... He truly was a genius.

    I think the biggest problem with the Fumana is that it can mainly do HP and BP. If you spend almost 1000 euros on a filter bank, you also expect a great LPF. Also here in the video everything sounds very thin and like a BP filter (sure this guy used a looot of FX).

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  2 года назад +1

      I can imagine! But it may be a better option to use Fumana in parallel, like I did with Strega in the video. I multed Strega's output to both XPAN and Fumana so I could mix the original source and the spectral Fumana odd/even outputs. A lot of money saved!
