- Hi, Hello! I'm Basicwitgirl and TODAY here on the channel we begin my first ever playthrough of BioWare's Dragon Age franchise! With the recent release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard and my completion of my blind playthrough of Mass Effect Legendary Edition, I figured I'd keep the BioWare trend doing and dive into their other beloved series! My "canon" playthrough is as an elf mage, but I was ITCHING to try to see where the other Heroes of Fereldon would have come from. Today we start in Denerim and what should be a happy wedding day for the city elf!

The City Elf origin is definitely the origin that pulls absolutely ZERO punches in terms of showing off the dark fantasy aspects of the Dragon Age setting. Both with Vaughan's role in it (god, getting the kill animation cutting his head off was so satisfying), and the fact that you can potentially leave things even worse than you found it if you wanna be a selfish scumbag. Yet also with a strong message of hope, family, and community if you become the hero they've needed for so long. In terms of writing and overall tone, it's definitely among the top three of the game's origins.
also since you kind of asked it's hinted through dialogue through the game that all the origins occured but only the warden that Duncan recruits/conscripts survives their origins. Human noble dies with their family, dwarf commoner is killed by the carta, mage is killed or made tranquil by the templars for helping Jowan etc. I won't spoil the dwarf noble or dalish origin but sufficed to say they won't last long without duncans intervention.
This was the origin I did when i first played the game, zero to one hundred in the blink of an eye lol.
"Going to get blood on my wedding dress" so they did promotional art work for each of the origins when the game came out, you can find them on the wiki on the entry for each origin after that comment i strongly recomend checking out the one for the city elf.
My favorite Origin! I personally think its the most emotional one (w the human noble) It really shows you how horrible of a place Thedas can be and give you the persepctive to how poeple of the lowest class are being treated. I love that the arranged marriage was with a really sweet man and not the classique horrible man that we are force to marry, it makes it heartbreaking when you see him trying to save you. Also I LOVE Shianni and Soris, they really feel like family. 🥺
The City Elf origin is the only origin that is different based on your gender.
Also; the concept art for this origin is awesome (they did a poster-style drawing of each origin). Your character kind of reminds me of Uma Thurman in Kill Bill.
Ooooooo I love this Kill Bill comparison.
The city elven origin is definitely dark and good RP fodder. My first character ever was a male city elf and I was honestly upset that I didn't get to stay with my bride (especially since she's real hot). I was actually mad that I was forced to leave my home, that my only escape was to be conscripted to an early death sentence just because of those garbage humans.
In fairness to your mage origin, though, it does introduce you to the extremely central conflict between the chantry and magic users, and there is plenty of injustice there although the mage origin story maybe doesn't do a great job of exposing you to the harshness of it. I know you weren't that bothered by it, but the fact is that you start in the tower because everyone who displays magic is stolen away from their parents as children by the Chantry and locked up there. Then when you come of age you're put to a trial where your captors decide whether to kill you or suck your soul out, or if you pass you get to look forward to spending your life imprisoned in a library by the Chantry's army. Happy 18th birthday!
Love that you are doing all origin stories! From my perspective mage origin gameplay is "must" one and you had to experience that, why? you will find out in this and next games. Don't regret your 1st gameplay choice! Better do ALL OF THEM :D
I think playing through these is a great idea. Now you have a better understanding of when they talk about castles and what it entails and also just how bad elves are treated, especially in these elven alienages. I don't know if it was the choices you made in your mage origin that didn't really show how the mages are treated but the mages are treated like prisoners in the circle, I think you might have had some interactions where someone talked bad about mages but not really have gotten the full scope of just how mages are despised. I am glad you are enjoying Dragon Age origins and these other origin stories. 🙂
*checks description * pretty tall for a dwarf commoner but I guess casteless come in all sizes
whoops! 😂

LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THAT THING!
That must be one of those New York rats that I've heard legends of.
The playthrough i just finished. I played him as a good guy, but with a serious chip on his shoulder. Also, when you get back to Denerim and you find out WHY the Alienate is closed, you get so.much.more.upset.
It's definitely my favorite Origins. Human Noble was 2nd.
This is one of the best origins, and it really shows how poorly the elves are treated in this world.
Mages are still the best class, though.
Fun fact, if you dont play using a specific origin you can still meet characters youd have known if you did. Some origins like the dwarf noble give important insight on whats truly happening! Also Bring Shale to the deep roads, it unlocks really cool dlc dialogue that cant be accessed if you miss it. When you get down there youll become party locked so im praying i got this message to you!
so one time I was come home from a friends ''session'' and was still buzzed,
I really wanted to play Origins, I had 2 available saves from different characters
but I didn't trust myself in my state to not screw up one of my ''main'' saves.
so I went for city elf as a new character just for the fun and realized you're supposed to play female here.
I went for it and the whole thing gripped me from the beginning of the brawl,
the personality that I choose was perfect for this start and I really leaned into it.
after finishing it and saying goodbye to the people in the elven allienage I knew I needed a canon worldstate with this charater
and now tea bag! 🤣
The City Elf origin story is different from the others in that it does split at a certain point: When playing as a male city elf you are obviously not abducted by the humans - instead of fighting your way out you have to fight your way in.
And yes, from a drama standpoint - the Mage story is definetly the weakest of them all.
I know what you mean about the Mage's origin story. It's a shame that, as a rogue or a warrior, you can choose any of the other five origins, but as a mage, you're limited to just the one in the Circle Tower. Could have been interesting to start as a mage hiding out away from the Circle in the Alienage or among the Dalish.
😊👍🏻 Positioning is key, usually with stabby rouge... you daze and go to stabby stabby from behind of enemy, for extra damage 😅
My dalish elf, later on found out what happened in the alienage and she gutted ...the culprit 😅 ;had some difficulties later on... but hell with it 🤣
I generally like to play a good guy regardless but played this origin as intended. Being abusive to King Cailan was strangely satisfying as he does come off as a bit dim.
Next time rock and stone or we're not coming home.
It always saddened me that whenever you picked one origin story, the other five potentials died. I'm all for gritty realism in my games, but DA:O is probably the only game where I felt attached to so many disparate characters in such a short time and wished they all joined me on my quest.
At least you will be able to "visit" one of the skeletons in the carta quest soon. Hope you'll notice it when you see it.
a pity in DA2 you are just "a human from Lothering".
while it made sense to not confuse players of DA:O with completely new origins (and developmemt of 6 stories for sure was stress on resources) it would have been nice to have more options in the second part of franchise. at least you are (if you were human mage in DA:O) a cousin to the Kirkwall hero. :)
The Dalish elf also has someone remembering them in DA2...
