Two things. If every one in every town village and city on the Susquehanna flushed at once I'll bet we can work together to get her unstuck.
Two. I think any superyacht that approaches 400' in length should be considered a ship.

I don't understand this push for the US to directly engage Russia militarily. As an American I want us to support Ukraine and there is a lot we can do. Neiter a blockade nor a no-fly zone make sense for the US. I get the Ukrainians want it but it makes no sense for the US. We got into this by lack of proper action. Over-reaction is not going to make it any better and would probably make things much worse.

Thanks for your reporting Sal. I get a subscription box that was sitting at Long Beach on the dock for two months. The company was told it would be a two-week delay, and duly informed their customers, but it ended up being a month and a half. They gave out coupons to their subscribers to make up for the super late delivery, but it happened twice to them. This probably hurt their business very badly.

It's good to see cruise lines focusing more on coastal and river routes. Who knows if the old heyday is ever coming back. And as a bonus, maybe the more 'cosmopolitan' getting a Mark Twain-esque view of America might change some viewpoints. A lot of 'flyover country' is stunning. Could be great for everybody.

Off topic: Would a large, decommissioned vessel be suitable for use as a floating chicken coop? I believe if it's possible, picking up a small load of grain (or other alternatives to feed chickens, as they're not too picky) at a port and raising them in transit might be profitable. Just another way to cut out the middle man. You might even be able to call it "Chicken of the Sea"...

its an interesting concept. Chickens eat just about anything, and you could also compost the chicken waste and sell as fertilizer. If the eggs are not washed after laying, storage would not be much of a problem for about a month without refrigeration. (3 months or so with refridgeration). Chickens lay pretty regularly for about three years and then start to slow down. A well cared for chicken can live to be about 15 years. I recently lost a chicken that was 13. On the open seas, you would not have a ptedator problem

The one thing I will add to "we'll be ok in the US we have plenty" As you pointed out Sal, looking into the futures market for food, most large agro food producer's are owned by multinational corporations who's allegiance is to "gain" and their stakeholders (.) < period. Without any regard to national border, it will go to the highest bidder wherever they are located.

@@wgowshipping I hope that my comment didn't come across as being to "froggy". I would expect that the grain/food market is like the oil market. Domestic prices are reflected by global market prices. The nations most hurt will be those with fragile small markets where the difference will not be just higher prices but no food at all, or not enough.
The food, oil and shipping supply issues added to the political instabilites casued by the Ukraine situation (like a power struggle in Russia if Putin is ousted, or things he might be?) and perhaps other places are creating huge uncertainties for the whole world. The USA policies the last two years have not helped and with what might happen in US elections in November, even if it is not a presidential election year. The news pundits look to have a very busy year.

With reference to your comments about the Jones Act, we've just had very sad news over here in the UK about one of our well known ferry fleets: P&O Ferries.
These days, they're owned by a company based in Dubai. Yesterday (Thursday 17th March), the company cancelled all sailings of its ferries and issued redundancy notices, effective immediately, to 800 of its staff. It was reported that they had agency workers ready to replace existing crew as they left the ships. Staff were informed by a video message.
There is plenty of detail about what's happened, and the reaction of staff, unions and the UK government, available from UK news sites.

If bunker fuel goes up, then shipments become more expensive to the East Coast, fewer ships making the Panama Canal voyage, less cargo going to East Coast Port? Then maybe China shutting down will bring fuel prices down and everything will stay the same. So much going on, anything can happen.

If the main point of the Jones act is to make sure that America has the maritime, merchant marine and associated capabilities, why not directly subsidize those?
I ask for three main reasons:
    1) It might be cheaper? And also it would spread out the cost across all Americans and not hit those on islands specifically hard. If we only subsidize the areas that actually need subsidies, then perhaps other areas will be able to flourish as exporters because of the ecosystem they are in where their specific area is actually efficient enough in America if there are economies of scale.
    2) We are aware of our lack of domestic capabilities in areas such as microchips and direct subsidies seem to be the solution the government has chosen for that issue. Folding it under that category of being self-sufficient from China would help unlock more funds.
    3) The current demands of the market for inter-US shipping might not align with what the US might need in times of emergency, as different types of emergencies have different needs, and most of them are different than regular day to day market operations. With direct subsidies we could target what we would need rather than what the market currently needs.
