A fundamentalist doesn't want to tolerate different opinions or perspectives for the simple fact that they just exist alongside his/hers, a fundamentalist wants to stamp out opposition or different ways of thinking in whatever means necessary just to get rid of disagreements. I would say fundamentalism in a general sense is equivalent to radicalism, in which Scott Hahn is of course not a fundamentalist, but a man with strong Catholic principles in all his limits.

@@JohnR.T.B. Patient. Not tolerant. The root word for tolerance is tolerare which means to bear, endure, carry and also to accept. Accept is part of the meaning of tolerare. When tolerare was used it meant to bear and endure with acceptance. Patience patientia which todays meaning is very similar to tolerance but anciently it meant to suffer calmly waiting for something to happen. When you read old Bibles you find patience but not tolerance because of this difference. God is patient in waiting indeed but he never tolerant. God never accepts sin when and if we persist in sin punishment is given. For example was St. Paul tolerant with the Judaizers that which circumcision for the pagan who became Christians? What if the Nicean Christians were tolerant with Arrians?
I have my doubts that Martin actually read the all Dr. Hahn's work from cover to cover. He hangs his argument on the suspicion of certainty in favor of social construct of probabilities and spectrum of possibility. Certainty presenting as a form of pride intellectually. That he received his PhD with material from this book, is telling of his peer review board.

Thank you for this. While I have not read much from Dr Hahn, I have listened to many talks and interviews he has given. I do not recognize him in the caricurature that this book seems to portray.
Way, way back, many years ago in the baby days of the internet, I came across cassette tapes of Scott Hahn and after listening to them I wanted to know more about this incredible Bible scholar. So I hopped on to this sleek new google website, a thing they called a search engine, and typed in his name. Back in those days of the internet, many many many people were running their own personally built websites. It was the days of bad font choices, bad color combinations, bad layout designs. One such website came up in the search results. It was nothing less than a full blown take down written by a protestant pastor listing all the ways Scott Hahn was a fraud and Satan's minion. Even as a young thinker the logical holes were glaringly obvious. One that I can remember, he asked how can a person only in his 30s write a biography. What kind of hubris makes Hahn think people want to read the life store of someone who hasn't lived life yet. He should learn some humility. But obviously a biography is different than a conversion story and lots of people were interested. The rest of the screed was just more like that. It would be fascinating to find it again. But anyway, all that to say, Scott Hahn has been drawing passionate detractors from his very earliest days and they just don't seem to have anywhere near the quality scholarship he does.
RUclips is including too many ads in the middle of the videos. It used to be only in the beginning of the videos. I cannot go more than 2 or 3 minutes without an interruption… it is annoying!
It seems he basically equates inerrantist with literalist-only interpretation, so anyone who believes that scripture is inerrant, Martin reads literalism and therefore fundamentalism. That seems to be a sophomoric blunder to me.
Dr Hahn has admitted the greatest fault of all: that he actively turned people away from Christ’s Church before he came to realize it was Christ’s Church. He is also generally self-deprecating in his talks.
Hi Trent, have you written anything regarding Markan prioririty? I have read a very interesting book recently by Bernard Orchard arguing for the priority of Matthew. Are you aware of his work and the recent scholarly work in this regard? Markan priority has its issues and is not unassailable
One way to bypass ads. Scroll video to end, then replay. If that doesn't work, try it again. You should be able to watch it without interruption of irrelevant ads. PS: my apologies for doubled comments.
I get the sense that Martin’s thesis started out as an idea, and then as he did more research he realized it doesn’t work, but only when it was too late. So he filled his dissertation with lots of summary to show that he knows his philosophy and theology, and then made a flashy criticism against Hahn because he knew it would get clicks.
These are not just issues of being 'liberal' or conservative. At their core, they are about fundamental aspects of God and his relationship with his creation-- our ability to trust our Lord and to put His will above our will. Great job and keep up the good work.
Liberal and conservative are just terms that very nice public commentators are using to describe those who are either Catholic or actually anti-Catholic, while still pretending to be in the Church (much like most of the current hierarchy are actually Catholic). Anyone who is a “liberal Catholic“ and does not hold to the 2000 years of Catholic teaching is not actually a Catholic, meaning ultimately they are not obviously Christian (Catholic and Christian being synonymous terms) and not part of the Body of Christ. But no commentator on social media wants to say that.
One of the main things I keep hearing over and over in this excellent critique, is a tension between actual Catholic teaching, and the post conciliar Vatican II liberalism. Make no mistake, 2000 years of Church teaching trumps the radical coup that has plagued us for a few decades.
“It’s interesting that Scott Hahn used the RSV-2CE translation instead of the NAB.” Hmm, yeah that is weird. Why would Scott Hahn, one of the guys behind the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible series which uses the RSV-2CE translation be using the RSV-2CE translation to cite scripture? It can’t be that he values it as a formal equivalence translation, it must be something more manipulative and sinister!
Keith Green took me out of the Catholic Church, but the Holy Spirit and Steve Wood brought me back in 1991. Steve Wood and Dr Scott Hahn were seminary mate's 🙏 I'm eternally Grateful for them both. Viva Cristo Rey 🙏
Just checked Martin's faculty page at Viterbo University, no mention of a PhD. I wonder if he's successfully defended this dissertation at the University of Dayton...
I agree with your review overall, but to get “nit picky”, the fact that we didn’t know about the priest scandal until after society began to degrade does not mean that those actions had no impact. The scandal is worth noting precisely because it also is an evil bastardization of God’s plan for our sexuality. Dr. Hahn, who I admire, should have discussed or tangentially explored this as well. Again, great critique! I learned some things today that helped me think about how to read critically.
Hi Trent! I'm still discerning whether I should be a Catholic or not, but nevertheless, I love what you are doing and I hope you keep continuing with your videos! Also just a request, you've gone against multiple types of beliefs such as atheist apologetics and also protestant Apologetics and because of that you're videos are really interesting haha. So may I ask are you going to try and go against *Jewish apologetics* and *Muslim apologetics* ? Thanks in advance and God bless! : D
@Rachel Pickering That is simply creating a straw person and causing more division in a society today that is so fractured. Why does he not live in harmony and work on the positives on what we can agree upon , instead of attacking a fellow christian who has a Ph D who wrote a book. Trent himself has made numerous errors and simply creates more straw people with different beliefs and puts himself above them as an authority. Dr Scott Hahn has made theological errors and is not above any Scholar who questions his theology in a constructive way.
One of my problems with apologetics as its practiced currently is this: it seems to me that most apologists use arguments in a manipulator way. The apologists usually knows the weaknesses or limitations of the arguments deployed but these are usually concealed providing that the argument convinces. Apologetics, in other words, is often about 'winning'. What is aimed at is not so much truth as the capacity to get someone to believe what you do.
this pueril criticism of Hahn's work is actually a tendency accros all disciplines where critics, and they have an important role, miss the point in criticizing in a constructive and coherent way works to keep on building knowledge, wisdom and honest work. i feel that also in my field where authors are criticized for their behaviors and sometimes ackward public talks rather on their scientific work, which is valuable and for sure with weaknesses.
Hey Trent, you mentioned Jack Chick in a video a couple weeks back. I'd love to see you do a video on some of his "work", it's often so inflammatory and bad faith that it's genuinely entertaining
Martin is obviously a complete relativist, because his definition of fundamentalism would apply to the magisterium of the Church, including basic definitions of the faith such as the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed and the Chalcedonian definition. Relativists like to think they are the brave, pioneering, free spirits seeking truth fearlessly, while the orthodox cower in their trenches of tradition.
This is long! For such a small book. When you mentioned the whole John Neumann thing, that was enough for me to understand this person is a fundamentalist lol it’s a good video tho. Scott Hahn is brilliant!
As a graduate theology student at Franciscan University, as well as someone who had Dr. Hahn participate in their conversion without knowing it… I thank God every day he left the Protestant religion and is standing for the one true faith of Jesus Christ. Honestly my only criticism of Dr. Hahn, and it’s barely a mild one at that, is I think it’s about time he gets into the discussion about the traditional Catholic mass vs. the Novus Ordo. With his in-depth level of scholarship, I know that he knows the diabolical history of its creation and that it was a move towards Protestantism by those attempting to destroy the Church. One day he is going to have to speak up about it even though he’s desperately trying to avoid it. God bless him and his family, they are a force for good. 🙏🏼
How did the dissertation committee at the University of Dayton approve such sloppy scholarship? And how did the editors at Wipf and Stock allow its publication? Whatever renown these institutions previously enjoyed just took a big hit.
There were an unusually high number of ads in this video. Same for the one about zeitgeist. It was annoying and almost made me stop listening. I think something might be afoot. I hope I'm not being too... certain
A few years ago I was facilitating the study The Bible and the Sacraments which uses Dr. Hahn's book A Father Who Keeps His Promises as an ancillary text. One of participants, to this day, complains about Dr. Hahn's lack of scholarship. I plan to send him this video.

Fundamental- adj. forming a necessary base or core; of central importance. Fundamentalist- (2nd definition, google) noun. a person who adheres strictly to the basic principles of any subject or discipline. "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets." Seems kind of fundamentalist, doesn't it?
As much as the author of this doctoral thesis deserves criticism for such a poor work, the supervisor of his doctoral thesis and the faculty should be named and questioned in terms of their standards.
One cannot prove or demonstrate the truth of the Catholic faith since faith is supra-rational (as opposed to infra-rational). You can provide an argument based on an inference to the best explanation but that is the extent of what reason can show. Pascal, I think, recognised the profound limitations of human intelligence, even though he put forward rational arguments- but of course he knew that those rational arguments only take one so far.
Okay, Trent was too classy to come out and say it directly but as this analysis went on, I could see what's up. I am aware of the people writing books about the faith and I really do not have time to read. Today there are many version of the Bible and there are many heresy in them especially on the internet and apps since there are easily cut & paste. There are no QA control of the publications. The Bible warns about the new converts to be in the leading role of the Church. Dr. Taylor Marshall also a new convert and had 4 books of his own. He is surely one of the TLM crowd that reject the 2nd Counsel and the N.O validity. If you watch a guy long enough you will find his error and I know some of these error are small and unintentional but the reject of the 2 Counsel and her teaching surely a very big group stand behind the tradition-band-wagon. Nothing wrong with the mass but their priest actually do not know what make a mass valid or not or what is the requirement for sacrament of confession or Communion. Surely it not wearing head cover or kneeling or on the tongue or Latin.
You can get a PhD in the USA for this? That is "troubling". It is "troubling" that his supervisor did not do a better job. A few hours before I listened to Trent Horn talking about Scott Hahn's commentary on Genesis I was actually reading it. How weird is that!! Swain challenging Scott Hahn is like a flea challenging an elephant to a fight.
Mike , taking into account Scott Hahn's testimony on Genesis 1 does not solve the problem , because he simply changed the genre to neutralize the fact that the biblical author was wrong scientifically ,and chronologically and logically , because the biblical author lived in a primitive age that could not rise up to the scientific understanding of reality. Also Scott Hahn still holds on to the outmoded theory of Biblical inerrancy.. which he inherited from Calvinism , who believe that every word and syllable of scripture was dictated by God . That is why he comes across as a catholic Fundamentalist , which is a contradiction if ever there was one in the term of the phrase. Scott Hahn still has a protestant mind in his understanding but covers it up by using catholic dogma and Blessed Mary as a means to confuse poorly instructed catholics .
@@peterj6740 Inerrancy does not mean that Scripture was dictated by God. We claim that all papal teachings are inerrant, that doesn't mean we're like Muslims, where the talent and sensibility of the Author has no bearing on the result. The Spirit guided the authors or the *redactors* like Esdra (who came up with the final version of the Pentatuche) to not include errors in their final works. Genesis is very clearly a origin myth, that's the genre everyone would have understood it by in the period where every time you met someone of a new ethnicity, you'd ask them where their people came from. Can you point out to an *error* in Scripture? If you accept the idea that different books are different genres, you really can't. You won't see a myth teaching you a theological, moral or anthropological error, or a historical account claiming provably false things, because there are none.

God bless good apologists, and if y'all ever feel frustrated by the critiques you receive, please try to remember those of us who need you because unless you say it, we won't hear it. Don't just 'know' something internally and not tell us. Help us to understand things better too, when you can. And God bless you.
That’s because liberal Catholics are not actually Christians, they do not want converts and they do not want the Church to expand, let alone hold closely the teaching of truth of the past 2000 years.
Martin sounds like he takes Francis very seriously, which is unfortunate. They both need to be prayed for.

I am Orthodox and really appreciate Scott Hahn - he is not a fundamentalist.
Me too. I have no doubt his early date for the Revelation will become the majority view.
I'm sure Scott Hahn, like in many of his speeches, will say, "What a grace." Instead of defaming Hahn's reputation, this book will drive its reader to find what Hahn actually writes in his books.
I loved reading Dr. Hahn's Father Who Keeps His Promises! Very helpful resource.
Not sure how the University of Dayton allowed this for a PhD. That said, more power to free exercise of scholastic study and exchange.
PS: Scott Hahn has far and away allowed the Catholic brain to dive deep into a treasure trove of Catholic tradition.
Also PS: would purchase your published 6000 word critique of the critique.

Speaking of books, I bought one of yours, its brilliant! Thanks so much Trent.
Was directed by Mike Winger to this channel. To understand the arguments.
What is wrong with making converts? Even if it is Scott Hahn's intentions to convert people to Catholicism, what is wrong with that? Please read James 5:19 "My friend if any of you wander away from the truth and another one brings him back again...will save that sinners soul from death and bring about forgiveness of many sins" On Pentecost Day, Peter harvested 3000 converts into the Church.
Other book reviews, for books that might be easily consumable by the public, would be really cool to see. Again, thanks for your continued good work!
Scott Hahn is a CATHOLIC - not an "American Catholic", and certainly not an "American Pope"!

I really admire how much thought and time you are willing to give in defense of Hahn's work. I would be tempted to roll my eyes and dismiss the level of incompetence that this dissertation seems to demonstrate. 😬
Even then, fundamentalism is not evil in and of itself and can be rightly ordered.
Tolerance is a word that almost never appears in the Bible.
Tolerance of opinions and perspectives can often lead to heresies and tolerance of sin.
@@algomez8563 It's said God is "slow to anger", that God is patient with us, and Jesus wants us to forgive others seventy times seven times (that is as many as required), and also "the measure you give will be the measure you get," And "do not judge, and you will not be judged."
We cannot tolerate wrong doings, against others and against God, but how we do it matters depending on the circumstances.
@@juice2307 Yes it's true, but in today's society everything with religious fundamentalism is very negatively viewed. I guess it's our calling to show that the Catholic fundamentals are always grounded on love to God and neighbors, because God loves us so much, that there are the yes and the no in everything because love is to be with God and away from our own right and wrong.
Sounds like a high school English paper shoe horning in quotes.
Also, I am not Catholic (I work as a youth pastor at a Baptist Church), but I know that John 6 is literal. Now you have met one!
Wonderful work Trent!
Apparently, Dr Martin condemns Augustine for tolle-ing and lege-ing.

I love Scott Hahn! I read Catholicism is growing world wide it's the Traditionalists that are growing In a Catholic news agency 🗞️📰🙏🛐🗝️🗝️💯 Catholic 📖
Dr Hahn is an extraordinary theologian and he is a special gift to the Church and the way (like Trent said) that his books are so readable by ordinary lay Catholics is great.
You know that you are doing something right when people start writing PhD dissertations about you.
Man. Anyone would be super intimidated if Trent to review your dissertation. Consequently, as Trent's follower, we should raise the bar in excellence. We need Trentlike here in our country. Praying il see it in my lifetime.
I am certain that you did a great job on this!
It doesn’t matter what he is, his works brought me back to the church that Christ founded. I love him too much.
The guy himself is a fundamentalist!
No, it's a malicious one. Only liberal heretics make it.
Martín seems to say that, but also accuse Hahn of not being literal; Martin’s definition of “fundamentalist” seems to change? Idk
Dr. Scott Hahn is a gem.
I think a better critique might have been to examine several of Hahn’s scholarly level works with their popular book counterparts.
Dr Hahn has admitted the greatest fault of all: that he actively turned people away from Christ’s Church before he came to realize it was Christ’s Church. He is also generally self-deprecating in his talks.
👍🏼
Hi Trent, have you written anything regarding Markan prioririty? I have read a very interesting book recently by Bernard Orchard arguing for the priority of Matthew. Are you aware of his work and the recent scholarly work in this regard? Markan priority has its issues and is not unassailable
Traditionally, Matthew has been seen as the earliest gospel.
@@marcus7049 Yes but it is very much a minority view amongst scholars (though less so in those that specialise in the synoptic problem).

PS: my apologies for doubled comments.
26:00 You are being waaaaay too nice to Martin because him omitting Hahn's acknowledgement of the wide range of opinions is malicious dirty pool.
OMG - so glad I sent my kiddos to a Genuine Catholic University and NOT 'University of Dayton' (which is who gave Martin a PhD for this 'disaster'!)
This entire video is just Trent going: "I'm not angry. I'm just disappointed."
One of the main things I keep hearing over and over in this excellent critique, is a tension between actual Catholic teaching, and the post conciliar Vatican II liberalism.
Make no mistake, 2000 years of Church teaching trumps the radical coup that has plagued us for a few decades.
“It’s interesting that Scott Hahn used the RSV-2CE translation instead of the NAB.”
Hmm, yeah that is weird.
God bless Dr Hanh, because of him 🙏 as a Catholic makes understand more the scripture.

If Dr. Hahn was a prideful know it all, he never would have converted in the first place. Conversion is a tough, thoroughly humbling experience.
4:43 I never knew that. Thank you for telling me!
Hey Trent, do an episode explaining the differences of al the English bible translations!
Excellent. Thank you Trent.
I am certain that 2 + 2 = 4. I must be a mathematical fundamentalist! :-)
“Liberal Catholics are wolves in sheep’s clothing.” Pope St Pius X
this pueril criticism of Hahn's work is actually a tendency accros all disciplines where critics, and they have an important role, miss the point in criticizing in a constructive and coherent way works to keep on building knowledge, wisdom and honest work. i feel that also in my field where authors are criticized for their behaviors and sometimes ackward public talks rather on their scientific work, which is valuable and for sure with weaknesses.
Hey Trent, you mentioned Jack Chick in a video a couple weeks back. I'd love to see you do a video on some of his "work", it's often so inflammatory and bad faith that it's genuinely entertaining
Haw haw haw.... :p
Blessed John Newman was under discussion here. St John Neumann was the bishop of Philadelphia. It is quite easy to get their names confused.

Why the title “American Pope”?
Seems like his advisors let him slide through on that dissertation.
SCOTT hahn is just great. Millions have benefited from Hahn's writings and come to the truth. Some people may not like the fact that Hahn skilfully affirms Catholicism. But we who read his books and watched his videos are grateful.

Fundamentalist- (2nd definition, google) noun.

"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets."
Seems kind of fundamentalist, doesn't it?
As much as the author of this doctoral thesis deserves criticism for such a poor work, the supervisor of his doctoral thesis and the faculty should be named and questioned in terms of their standards.
Yep 👍🏼
Thank you for this clear refutation of this poor book. Continue your good work. Thank you for M. Hahn!
What we have is some left-leaning fellow writing a polemic against Hahn because Hahn's a conservative. I'm sure that his doctoral thesis was highly praised by everyone in academia as a result. 🙄

This guy’s problem with Hahn strikes me as jealousy, and if this is his best work, you can see why. What kind of diploma factory would award a PhD for this?
