  • Stratification is produced by bedforms and can be used to interpret flow conditions. In this video, I summarize where deposition and erosion occur on a ripple or dune, how that relates to the boundary layer, and the cross stratification produced. You can see my lecture notes on sedimentary structures at dawnssedstrat.b... and the first part of dawnssedstrat.b...

    Hello,
    I am from India and I'm studying Geology. Your videos are so helpful for my Sedimentology and Stratigraphy classes. Thank you!

    I don't know you But I would like to thank you. These lectures really can be helpful for all geology students around the world. I'm a MSc student from Turkey.

    finally understand the formation of cross stratification. Geology without visualization/demonstration is nothing.

    You can show the erosion and transport by rubbing out some of the chalk lines and drawing new lines to show the accumulation but the profile need to be correct AND be consistent. You really need to keep the direction of time progressing slowly and in one direction to reflect how how the ripple/dune migrates, and not confuse matters. 5 out of 10

    How is biogenic secondary sedimentary structures indicative of the depositional condition?

    • @sumnerd
      @sumnerd  9 лет назад

      It depends on the type of biogenic structure. Often they form when the sediment surface is stable, in other words, the sand is no longer moving. That allows organisms to burrow the sand or microbial mats to grow on the ripple surfaces. Some biogenic structures, such as footprints, can form as the sand is moving, but they tend not to get preserved.

      @@siddharthranjan8013 What is the volume? It’s more like 3%. What is that volume?
