I love how this all sounds in theory, but with all the political stuff going on with big tech right now, it's really making me skeptical. I think it's also really sneaky to have it enabled by default. Something doesn't smell right here. Thank you for pointing this out.

Thanks for your explanation . . . however, I'm suspicious of any person/organization/entity that defaults me (with very short notice notice) into something (with the rationale that it's for my benefit) & this 'default' is costing a portion of (granted very small) of my internet connection (which I pay for). So, Amazon is going to be riding for free as all of us pay for the foundation of their sidewalk. Make no mistake about it, this is not for our benefit . . . tell me any corp. that's altruistic enough to do something like this? No to mention the recent cyber attacks (gas pipe line; meat industry; etc) . . . no, not interested in giving any access to my internet.

This brings up an interesting question...say you have old 1st/2nd gen echo dots...they don't support sidewalk. But if you add a new echo dot before June 8th 2021 it will show up under "account setting" and you can either disable or enable it...but after June 8th if you add a new echo dot you will not be able to opt-out of Sidewalk.

Thank you very much, Craig for this very objective and positive video about Sidewalk. I learned about Sidewalk early, perhaps due to my interest in LoRa, and I have become so sick and tired of all the knee-jerk negativity and Halloween-like harum-scarum about Sidewalk on other RUclips channels. I am eagerly looking forward to taking advantage of it, and I hope to see more detailed videos from you about that. I will look forward to coming here to learn about devices and opportunities to take full advantage of Sidewalk, so I look forward to followup videos from you on the topic, with tips and ideas.

I don’t have an Alexa yet but getting one soon and I think it’s a good idea.
We like to think about the “what if’s “ more than the positives.
You are trying to see both sides which is good.
We all will be connected at some point and we might not know it now but it’ll come in handing at some point as well.
We got to stop sweating the negatives and the paranoia.

So just let the government and big tech (very connected at this point) infringe and violate our privacy incrementally and "don't sweat it"?
Let me guess... "I have nothing to hide so it's ok", right?
I definitely agree a lot of the tech is amazing and we should take advantage of it, and embrace how it can make our lives easier, but to just not worry about privacy and their consolidation of power at the same time is completely irresponsible.
Maybe I'm overstating what you you mean, and if so, I apologize, but we can't continue to be frogs in a slowly boiling pot either.
      Have a great day.

If you’re that paranoid and you can’t trust “big tech” then don’t use it.
To use any technology that can be used to spy on you and others then don’t use it.
Don’t say you can’t stop using them.
      You can.
      Go off the grid.
      Give up what scares you.
We are all connected, that’s life, that’s the future.

A trend among tech companies is to go fishing with free or low cost capabilities that may provide some benefit to users of those capabilities but also benefit the tech companies enormously. Hey there still is no free lunch so you can bet your 401k that Amazon is getting more out of the situation than you are and probably more than all users combined. That Amazon benefit may not be realized immediately, but you can bet your 401k that there is an easily attainable threshold where those benefits start flowing to Amazon. Another major consideration is that once you are on Amazon's sidewalk how hard is it to get off it. How entrenched in your life does Amazon become by making you dependent on THEIR services for which their is NO competitor. How long do you think Amazon will continue giving you their promotional free service before they decide that you are so entrenched that it would be to painful for you to move off their sidewalk and so they got you right where they want you and start charging for their "free" service. Today there are alternatives to everything that Amazon want's you to think is too cool to not get from THEIR sidewalk. I emphasized THEIR because remember they "own" sidewalk and probably can attach their ownership to your devices as a condition of use the first time you connect. Read the terms and conditions very very carefully. Hire a lawyer to protect yourself from the richest monopoly in the world before you commit anything to Amazon which they so sneakily tried to slip by you by activating their service by default! Bottom line: understand your exposure before you step into Amazon's trap and make sure you have a real damn good reason to buy into this tech offering, not just because it's so cool and like totally geeky or says "Amazon"!

We had an email about it in the U.K., but it was a mistake, at the moment, it is not going to be launched in the U..K, they would have to rename it to pavement :), we don't use the term sidewalk here. The other thing is our privacy laws are a bit stranger than in the U.S, so if it came here, it would have to be as an opt in system. Bt used to use a system called Fon many years ago on their routers, in which people could share a bit of their bandwidth, so other people outside could use it for their phones. It is now called BT Wifi.
When I was with BT for my broadband many years ago I thought it would be useful, for my HTC s710, we are looking at around 2007 here, so no high speed cell network, but not enough people had Fon and certainly not in the centre of town where it would have been more useful
As for Sidewalk/pavement, if it came to the U./K, because it would be an opt in, i expect it would not take off that well

My home network is not to be shared with anyone for any reason, at any time without my 100% control. It is 100% private and security is a top priority. This "service" being defaulted to On should be a big red flag.
I disabled this "Service" months ago in the app. Just checked again today and found it enabled... again. A real trust builder right there. My next step will be to figure out how this "Service" is communicating and disable it in my gateway. If that does not work I know there is space for all of these devices out in the county landfill.

Despite the fake scare tactics, this technology doesn’t allow people browsing the internet…the only thing it does is sends a ping to amazon servers that a device is nearby along with any useful related information.
It’s capped at 80kbps and 500Mb a month of “sharing”. It can’t be used for anything else other than GPS, device information and that communication is encrypted so the middle-man doesn’t actually know what is being sent.
    With that in mind,
I don’t agree with Amazon making it on by default.
I don’t agree with sharing any portion of my internet with strangers.
I agree with turning this setting off

Just don’t see the neighborhood benefit. I don’t believe we should build the network and then the uses for it will come after. Sorry, not going to be a relay for the equivalent of a tile tracker. Maybe some gem use is hidden that I don’t know about. But Amazon’s own description is for finding lost things or pets. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.

I'm guess if you have a poor connection from a Ring doorbell to router then it would have to be reasonably close to neighbour's network to correct the problem.

    • @CraigsTechTalk

The idea would be that your other sidewalk devices would help with a stronger connectio. Like THREAD that Apple is using, the device to device communication is faster and a stronger connection.

@@CraigsTechTalk While that might work, why would you rely on devices outside of your control? If your ring doorbell is suddenly working better because the neighbour added a new device, is that really a good thing? What hapens when he shuts that device off?

Hello Lee, what I am talking about is using sidewalk for personal use. You can use it to help connect your own devices with the support of sidewalk. There is not enough reason yet for me to share my sidewalk devices with neighbors. I see benefits now for personal use.

This is dystopian as all hell. There is this amorphous low cost 900mhz (almost unblockable, at least without SERIOUS consequences). Right now if you have - lets say - a smart TV, and you don't trust it from a privacy perspective, you can just not connect it to your network. With sidewalk just about anything that is powered can surreptitiously be spying on you. Picture a future where every extension cord, every light bulb (even non-smart ones) absolutely everything in your house has a little microphone and is constantly listening, and sending data back home over Side3walk or similar networks, and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.
Shit like this needs to be completely banned, yet because of industry lobbyists it will likely never happen, unless we have a revolution.
