+Joey A We're deadly serious, obviously. As much as I love George Maple, a precedent was set with Ariela Jacobs ... and this remake pales in comparison, I'm afraid.
+abluecassette "ruined" is a bit strong, but sure the original arrangement was simpler and better. it's like when you leave a track for a while, then go back and tinker around with it for the sake of tinkering and it just becomes overproduced. shame. Ariela Jacobs has amazing vocals too. Sure, George has a great voice and may have penned the lyrics, but should have left it be. That ship had sailed, she's so talented it'd be easy for her to move on to the next.
I purchased both versions (FLAC/lossless).
Both versions have merits and neither are perfect.
The first verse is actually sung far better by Maple (sharper attack, better definition, superior accent for the purpose) and really sets the scene. Unfortunately she falls apart in the high pitched stuff that follows, where Jacobs is superior. However neither vocalists really manage the high pitched chorus particularly well, and both sound incredibly strained. I think a live version with both vocalists could be cool, and I think there's also plenty of opportunity for someone to do better than them both. Just my honest opinion, no bias either way, and I'm feeding both through some expensive audio equipment. Props to Goldroom for a pair of ripper albums in any case.
