Branwell was excluded from the knowledge that his sisters were making an attempt to write professionally not because he had "his own plans", but because he became frequently drunk and too talkative and it was imperative (especially for Emily) that no one would found their true identities. @koljenny No Emily was not autistic. People with autism have such a great difficulty to communicate with others that at first their parents think they are deaf. Emily had evidently a wealth of vocabulary & could express herself. She just didn't like talking to strangers. She could have a kind of social phobia,but I guess a reticent character combined with the terrible experience of that first time away from home (when Maria & Elizabeth died) could make her feel uncomfortable outside her family.
In an interesting chapter on the Brontes in his book "Shakespeare's Tremor and Orwell's Cough; the Medical Lives of Famous Writers," the author John. J. Ross, M.D., also postulates that Emily had Asperger Syndrome. If you haven't read it, you might be interested in doing so.
I didn't over analyze, I just observed that she had many traits in commen with Asperger's. And no, it's not a 'fashionable' diagnosis, it's very different from Schizophrenia and it is beyond being different.
Yeah. Some of this information about Branwell (especially the part you just mentioned) is not what I've read in biographies. The documentary can be annoying in trying to make events more dramatic.
I don't claim to be an expert, but I have a qualification in English and know quite a bit about the Bronte's. As for the psychological part, I know about Asperger's from reading up on it and personal experiences. I'm not making a blind judgement here, I'm merely suggesting from some sources that she could have had Asperger's. I don't think I would hate people wondered if I had a certain condition after my death either.
This documentary the Bronte sisters doesn't portray them as they really were it is specially doesn't capture Branwell very well either he was a vile drunk with ideas above his station and not the the polite posh speaking gentlemen they have him in This documentary the the scene we are Emily friends Charlotte reading her stories is acted too polite and did this the argument in passing but I bet in reality Emily would have slapped her sister feeding her privacy or punch Charlotte in short vet school documentary has painted the life of the Brontes looked like a a chocolate box scene
@samlovestink I certainly agree with you there, but the documentary seems to share Barker's idea about Charlotte and she (Barker) in her effort to present a different image of Charlotte (than the sanctifying one of Gaskell's) really tried to make her appear much more nasty and scheming and jealous.
I don't know if this makes it more dramatic but it sure shows Charlotte in a more disagreeable and unfair light. I don't even believe she would have been against Branwell's writing a novel. I have never read anything about it and how could she be adverse to it if she thought the same career for herself. They make her seem inconsistent.
@ksotikoula Maybe she had Asperger's which is a higher functioning form of Autism. Looking at Emly she does have many of the characteristics. People with aspergers can talk and many of them talk with a ritch vocabulary. Many people with asperger's also tend to write stories and feel at home with nature rather than with people. She also had a bad temper and that could be partly meltdowns commently felt by peopole with autism and aspergers. I don't think we should rule out the possibility.
At this point how could one include Branwell in any real endeavor much less one you wanted to pursue in secrecy ? He would not have finished his part , but would be found boasting about it all at the Black Bull. Why yes, I have had experiences with alcoholics, why do you ask? : /
I hate to pick on ANY of the Bronte sisters, Charlotte least of all, but... If that exchange with Branwell really DID happen... "She's a married woman, you can't love her!" ...Weren't YOU just in love with a married MAN, Charlotte? Again, you--she--are--was--one of the greatest authors of the Age...but those who live in glass houses probably shouldn't be casting stones as well (sorry for the trite metaphor, surely Charlotte or Emily or Anne could've done better!) :)
A-level and I got a B. As far as punctuation, it is the internet, not and essay, no one is perfect and you shouldn't be so quick to point the finger when you have forgotten to capitalise your post. I am currently at university and I check my essays through before submitting them. You appear to be just looking for ways to slag me off here. I see now why Emily is talked about so little. Her life was less 'spicy' compared to Charlotte and Branwell.
