This song is about a toxic abusive relationship where Lana’s character is so in love and attached that she’s almost brainwashed into staying with him. There are many women who are trapped in this kind of relationship. Makes me think of women who struggle with Dependent personality disorder. However there’s much more going on between the lines. Lana said at one point she got pulled into a cult where the leader, “Jim” had this philosophy that you had to break someone down in order to build them up. It was very dangerous but she was eventually able to escape it. Jim is also referencing the cult leader Jim Jones and the mass Kool-aid suicide. The lyrics “sirens, sirens” reference an ambulance but also the mythological creatures that entrance sailors with their beautiful song but ultimately kill them. And violins, violens (violence)… violins sound beautiful which she has associated with his abuse. There’s so much more double entendres and meanings throughout this song. Lana truly is a masterful poetic genius
You understood the meaning of the song so well! You would be surprised to know so many critics and people accused her of glamorising abuse. When she was just singing about her experience and so many DA survivors has shared their experiences about this, how when they are in that situation they take violence as the love or affection. It was hard for them to understand that at that time. About Jim, she has used the name many times in her discography, since Lana has had alcohol addiction in teens it could mean the substance or as you pointed about Jim the cult leader, that is a possibility as well. She once said in interview that she was close to someone who was almost like a cult leader but she distanced herself from them very soon. Also a smaller point, this song was from her 2nd Album “Ultraviolence” which might be up your alley (it is soft/psychedelic rock-ish) So for future recommendations any songs from Ultraviolence album will do.
Thank you so much! How could anyone think that anyone in their right mind would actually glamorize abuse?!? That's crazy! I think those believing that don't know much about poetry in the first place. Their loss. I have a lot of songs on my list from this album I just don't know what will be next. I appreciate you my friend! ❤️
hii loved the reaction! for your info she as an audio book where she reads almost all her poems that are in her book. Would definitely recommend! Hearing her read her poetry adds so much emotion to it!!
No matter how many times I have listened to the song ultraviolence it ALWAYS hits me really hard. I cry every single time. The play on "I can hear (police) sirens sirens violins violins" instead of 'violence' n how her mind changes the police sirens sound to violins to protect herself, and the "we can go back to the start when I don't know who you are" - wish I had never even known you to begin with and the "I could have died right there in his arms b/ he was right beside me"- he could have literally killed me right there; "Jim taught me that loving him was never enough"- learning that no matter how much I loved it was never enough for you. ahhh I can go on n on, it always gets to me. I bawl. the whole album is very rock inspired. you will like it! the album is ultraviolence and this is the title track.
I luv ur vibe! and love how u appreciate her music. This song and album was super relatable to people who have gone through abuse, ill always love this song, more lana! u should listen to her reading her own poetry its super nice.
Jim is a name that Lana has used in her songs since the beginning of her career and nobody really knows if Jim is the real name of somebody she was with or just a name she refers to her lovers as. It’s one of many reoccurring references in her songs over the years. Also I loved how you mentioned “Super 8” as it happens to be the title of one of Lana’s earliest unreleased songs that was made when she went by “Lizzy Grant”. She has always been super retro. Loved this reaction!!
Thank you so much! Someone had mentioned 'Jim' being a reference to alcohol (Jim Beam for instance). I don't know if that's correct. I didn't know she had a song called 'Super 8'! Nor did I know she went by other names like Lizzy Grant! Thanks' for the info, my friend! ❤️
In this song, she references many things, like that cult leader named Jim Jones and the ultraviolence from "A Clockwork Orange"... but everything indicates that she is talking, in this song, about alcohol dependence. "He hits me and it feels like a kiss," "I could die right there beside her," and "the ambulance sirens." If you analyze the song, you can understand that she really seems to be talking about alcohol dependence.
That's definitely a part of it but I think the big picture here is the abusive relationship whose victims think of the abuse as a way of showing love. She indicates that in the line you quoted, He hits me and it feels like a kiss. Associating violence with the tenderness of a kiss as having the same meaning. She was criticized for glorifying abuse but that was from people who didn't understand that she was calling it out and showing why victims stay in an abusive relationship. Thank you for your thoughts, my friend!
I recommend "shades of cool" and "freak"!! Shades of cool has phenomenal instrumentals, especially on the bridge where the guitar overtakes her voice, essentially showing how she's trying to get through to him but she can't. Freak is honestly just fun and psychedelic-pop, kinda cult vibes given the music video and the lyric "screw your anonymity, loving me is all you need to feel like I do"
The poetry book idea is very nice! Her reading voice is so calming so I would suggest listening to her audio book. I own the physical copy as well but it was lil hard to get the flow of her poems (for me) But hearing her spoken poetry I could read the poems on my own.
I don't know if I can find any of the poems on YT and if I can, I don't know if I'll be able to post it. But I sure want to give it a try! Thank you, my friend! ❤️
I love rock and metal, and my brother got me into Lana. She has some songs that are more rock influenced on this album! Shades of cool is one of them! Has some awesome guitar
So happy when I saw you posted this song! I love all the songs on the ultraviolence album. Another good song on the ultraviolence album is "shades of cool" !!
Love your Lana reactions. Btw idk why Lana’s video links you to the lust for life album. This is the title track of her 2nd full album “ultraviolence”. I think since you’re into metal you would appreciate the UV album. Lots of psychedelic rock inspirations. People has said the whole vibe feels like a heroin high. Great guitars and melodies. Vocals are amazing too.
her poetry book is called "violets bent backwards over the grass" and she has also made it into a vinyl so you can also listen to her reading her own poetry
If you’re planning on reacting to more of Lana’s Ultraviolence songs, I’d recommend listening to “Brooklyn Baby”, and her deluxe tracks such as “Is This Happiness” and “Flipside” one of my favorite tracks that end the album 🖤
Oh yes, my friend- I'm only on the novice level of Lana- much more to go! I only had one of your recommendations on my list so I'm happy to add the others. Thank you! 🤘❤️🤘
i love your reactions so much! and your thoughts on the lyrics..i'm also a lot into lyrics and poetry :) i saw your beth hart reactions first, her and lana are my favorite female artists alongside amy winehouse and others😍you said that you like pop music thats deep and florence and the machine came to my mind instantly! her poetry and lyrics are great! if you want to check her out i'd recommend what the water gave me, blinding (acoustic), falling and my love(the poem version) looking forward to your reactions x
Thank you so much, my friend! I really appreciate your recommendations as far as Florence + The Machine goes. I've had an index card started on them for a while now so I've added all of your suggestions. I am very down for starting that adventure! Also, check out Aurora from Norway. she's amazing! ❤️❤️
@@BemusingBill oh i'm so looking forward to it and thanks for adding my suggestions 😊 i'll def gonna check out Aurora! I only heard one or two songs so far so thats gonna be fun :)
One reason why her music sounds "older" and her mvs look vintage i think it's that Lana del Rey got is inspiration from the 50s, 80s, 90s and artists like kurt Cobain, Lou Reed, axl rose, Amy winehouse and many more.
Uncle Bill... Now you have discovered Queen Lana ... I'd like to suggest that you check out Angelina Jordan... she's already a seasoned artist at the tender age of 18 , having won Norway's got talent at age 7yrs Old... Angelina has done many covers in her own style including Queens Bohemian rhapsody..and Suspicious minds by Elvis.. she's also has original songs and has recently released her first EP called Old Enough, which comprises 5 songs... I promise you that you won't regret diving down the rabbit hole of AJ...she also has a great fan base who will enhance your channel given the chance... I'm really happy I found you uncle Bill isn't Lana fantastic... love and light from across the pond 🙏😘🇬🇧🥰
I'm so happy you found my channel my dear niece! Oh, I do love Lana! Besides covering all of her songs, I plan on covering her poetry too! So, what I do when someone recommends a new artist like Angelina Jordan, I start a file on them like where they are from and as much info as I can as well as songs that are suggested. I also take note of who it was that led me to the artist so when I do a video of my first reaction to that artist I can give credit to that person- in this case YOU! Thank you thank you thank you! Love and hugs from across the pond! 😘❤️
Thank you, my friend! I have teo index cards filled with Lana songs and I can't believe that Candy Necklace wasn't on my list! Well, it sure is now! ❤️
"Ultraviolence" live version is probably the best version of this song, not that this version isn't great too (which it is 😊): ruclips.net/video/Z0cBa4xXXvE/видео.htmlfeature=shared
i told u, UV is something else. ultraviolence (the track) is not from Lust for Life album it's from the same name album. it shows Lust for Life (her 4'th album) for promotion during its time. anyways, why don't you try the other tracks on this album? this album is my favorite lol
Yeah you did! It's weird that the link was for LFL in the description box. I knew it was on UV cause that's how I had it written so I got thrown off! I do have a bunch I'm going to do from this album before moving on to another album. Thank you!

yes i luv the way she writes so much and her double meanings and lyrics left up to interpretation
Cool! Sounds like I was pretty much right on the money. That doesn't happen that often 😂so I'll take what I can! Thank you!
..."Blackest day" is deep, and "Young and beautiful" is meaningful and great 🤘😊👍
