What a brilliant upload from the vintage years of Radio 2!
2 hours of timeless music, and hearing dear old John Dunn as presenter was the cherry on top.

A great concert. What a tragedy the old D'Oyly Carte closed down. All those decades of good performances. There were plenty of options for taking a fresh overview of the operettas while adding a sprinkling of the tradition that was so loved by audiences. There were other operettas that could have been considered for the repertoire- Merrie England , The Arcadians , Chu Chin Chow in addition to the G & S shows. When the company closed it had one of the best groups of principal singers it ever had. Taking the subsidy away was designed to kill it off. I saw The Sorcerer in the final season and it was a creditable performance.
