Hi Jan! This is an interesting and very informative video!! I totally agree about thecombination of the R5 and the 100-500. Question: In a former video you advised not to use extenders on zoom lenses? Have you come to another conclusion now? I am thinking about buying either the 1.4 or the 2.0 extender - maybe both: Which one should be first? Again, thanks for this video! Kind Regards, Jan, DK
It's an interesting question, my general view hasn't changed and even on the 100-500 I would prefer not to use extenders, but it seems like the lens can handle them well enough, which makes them a viable option. The main drawback is that you can't zoom back fully. so with the 2x it's a 600-1000mm lens. I think it depends what you want to achieve with the extenders. Generally speaking a 1.4x is always slightly better than a 2x
Great demonstration of TCs. I ordered the 1.4X and problably I will try the 2X later. Love those birds from down under. I might visit just for the birds. Luckily I am not a tennis player.
Looks like such a fun day to be out, Jan! Just seeing Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo's was a huge treat for me, and I definitely didn't get them down low. Maybe on a future visit. Pretty sure a 100-500mm will be in my kit eventually.
I like my rf100-500mm very much ,I use it with R6 and R10. I also use it more than my ef 400mm DO ll +1,4lll extender combo with adapter ,it is so much lighter and more flexible ,and equal picture quality. Now when winter and dark days are coming I am getting 1,4 rf extender ,so I can use 100-500mm more with R6 which is so much better on high iso values.
Phenomenal Jan, I bought the 100-500 after watching a bunch of reviews including yours and I agree with you. My biggest takeaway though was your comment of shooting 4000 shots. I’ve been too lazy to do that but you’ve inspired!!! Also I’m working on real camera profiles since Adobe doesn’t have one, still in process. When I come up with the right recipe I’d love to have you try it. I’ve been designing cameras for 25 years and can’t stomach inaccurate colors so I’m on a quest…
@@jacobgarvelink2441 Sorry I've only ordered it, through Australian retailer "Camera House" along with the canon r3. They are both on back order / pre-order. I don't expect either of them to arrive until next year at this stage. I am without a camera and going quite insane.
wow what a video thanks jan. got my 100-500 a month a go and I am so happy with the results with the R5 soon I will get the extender one of the two still wandering which is best for me. again thanks
Double thumbs up. I'm going to have to check out the master class, because I've got this combo (without the extenders) and I'm losing way too much clarity and sharpness upon noise reduction. (Probably because I'm using Lightroom's noise reduction rather than an AI reduction.) Either way, absolutely gorgeous shots! At first glance, I'd have no idea they were in such low light.
Hi Jan, hope all is well and great review on this lens. I will be doing a review on this lens myself today for Canon in The Netherlands so pleased to find your review and amazed by the high ISO's you where able to use and the results you got. Hope that when Corona restrictions on traveling are down and i will be able to travel to Australia again we can meet up again some day. Wish you all the best! greetings, Jeroen Stel
Great, how bless are your Country wiith all of thes so beautiful wilds birds, Thisi lens is amazing, it make a great job with the Canon R5 is the perfect complement. Thank you for share it.
Great video and well timed. My RF100-500 has been backordered for a few months and looking forward to its arrival. Thank you for explaining the higher fstop results - my concern.
Amazing video and really great shots. Going to have to look at your editing techniques since I'm somewhat a newbie. Thank you for sharing your content.
Great video Jan! I have this combo and it works great with close subjects but when the bird is small inside a forest a bit far away and I just want a clear shot of for ID purposes, I find that it doesn't focus even with spot AF on the bird. What could be the issue? Am I just asking too much?
i am interested in the same combo. does it provide enough reach, even for tiny birds? do you still need to crop all your images? how about the background blur at 700mm f/10?
I have finally got my 100-500 this week after a long wait. One thing I noticed with the mirrorless cameras is that it cannot autofocus in very low lighting and the ISO matters in terms of the AF performance. It seems like the AF system looks at a digital version of the scene (after the ISO gain has been applied) and uses that for AF. In a very dimly lit scene, until you increase the ISO it just won't autofocus and will keep searching. In my old set up with the DSLR obviously the AF had nothing to do with what ISO you have set. Would you agree with this? It's not a problem since you would eventually like to have the ISO high to get a decent shot, but it's just something I have to remind myself since I have only recently started using the mirrorless. Until I increase the ISO enough to make the scene in my evf bright enough, the AF wouldn't work. It seemed like this is even more true with the 100-500 compared to my 100-400 on the same camera, but I might be wrong since it should be a camera thing independent of the lens (unless I got a faulty lens!).
The AF system is different. I never tested it like that, since I usually have my exposure set correctly. There are many different factors that can influence AF performance.
Yes, it's not that important a factor from the practical standpoint, but I was surprised to notice this since on a DSLR the AF has nothing to do with ISO. I don't understand the AF system of mirrorless well enough to tell why this may happen, and I couldn't find anything on the internet either. But I did quite a bit of testing in controlled environment and figured that it is indeed the case.
Very nice video to the point where f 7.1 is concern for wildlife photography. I m considering shifting from Tamron 150-600mm G2 to Canon RF 100-500mm on R5 body since long. But 7.1 is the only stopping factor.
Question for Jan... how much of the image quality is coming from the 48 megapixel camera? Considering an R3 or R1 right now. Would the output be significantly different or only if i really zoom in during edit as you were in this or if i crop in a lot then go to print? Thanks Jan this is really good :)
Really great video...again. I really like the rain photo that highlights the environment as well as the wildlife. Big fan!!! Keep posting. As a side note what software or process do you use for sharpening and noise reduction? I'm a big fan of Topaz as I find it does such a good job particularly in noise reduction but what is your process? I've been looking at the 100-500 for some time and this just convinced me - it's in the bag.
Great and informative video, with some amazing photos. Very happy to see that this combination is working this well, because i will buy the same combo. Thanks again for once again sharing your experience with us. Greetings from a Norwegian in Brazil
I am so glad you did this video...I was shooting Sandhill Cranes with the full moon behind them...and got home only to be disappointed...I was trying to shoot at high iso and 1/1250. I should have used your technique and shot at a much slower speed...i was trying to stop the motion of the birds in flight...have you attempted this scenario? Thanks for the video I will be checking out your master class....
I have never tried to get flying birds against the moon. I don't think you did wrong by trying to get a fast shutter speed. What were you most disappointed in?
Thank you Jan! Very useful since I evaluate if I should switch to exactly this combo! I use Olympus M1 mark iii with 300mm and the two teleconverters today. Very nice reach (1200mm with TC20) but I'm not happy with AF and miss zoom. R5 AF and image quality seems wonderful but similar reach. I calculated that R5 in crop-mode with TC14 gives 1120mm, f/10 and a 17MB file compared to 1200mm, f/8 and 20MB. I guess R5 will be better even with higher ISO?
one uestion, do you think could be a good lens for landscpaes and seascapes with big waves even in low light? or a 70-200 f2.8 coul be better. best regrads Jose
Hi Jan, great video. I ordered this lens a while ago and can't wait to get it. Do you think I'd get the same incredible results with my EOS R like you with the R5?
@@jan_wegener okay, too sad, but that's what I thought. But I guess I'll still be happy with this lens. I'll just try it. Thank you and greetings from Germany
Jan, is that kinda bird reservation where you made this video or is that population density normal, if you’re living close to however-that-kind-of-bush-and-forest-land-is-called and walk a few metres from the street into the wilderness? That’s awesome,
Great video great kit buddy, love the fact we use the same kit as watching your videos help me get the best from it all! 😉👍🏼👌Great pics and video and well presented as always..Enjoying your masterclass by the way too.... all the best JP
Hi Jan! Iwe had this lens now for about a months, im really pleased, tho id wish it was abit sharper, so I have started looking into getting a used 500 or 600 prime ef.. witch one would you say is the sharpest out of the 6 that exists? :)
Thanks for this timely video as I’m on the verge of pulling the plug and getting the RF 100-500 over the EF-100-490. I was looking for your audio equipment and can’t see it? You seem to get decent bird sounds. How do you get this level of audio?
Really good video Jan. I have just managed to get hold of a 100-500 and a x1.4 extender after a 4 month wait. Keen to try it out soon! I downloaded your Masterclass video several months ago and it has transformed the way I process my images! However the video doesn't say a lot about noise reduction which is clearly crucial for these high ISO photos. I have used Neatimage for many years and am generally very pleased with it. I am wondering what you use and whether you are planning another video on this topic?
I will, but I also made this video with Glenn on how we use NR atm. ruclips.net/video/q-gMFMd9D7s/видео.html Mainly by running the RAW through DXO Pure RAW
@@jan_wegener Thanks for this. Clearly missed that one. Will watch shortly. Note however I tried DXO Pure Raw recently and didn't like it. Seemed to be all or nothing with no adjustments and it oversharpened the image unless the optics module was disabled
Your video shows that you can get very decent results using teleconverters and that low light is not a real problem anymore. At the other hand you say that you prefer to use the 100-500mm without converters...My question is: in what situation would you use a teleconverter? I have the R6 and the 100-500 mm and I think I could use a teleconverter in moments I can't come close enough to the birds to fill a reasonable part of the frame to prevent that I have to crop too much (and left with few megapixels). Am I right about that?
Yes I use the teleconverters when I am "just" too far away and a TC would give me a nice composition and image. I don't like the use them when the subject is still too far away even with the extenders, cause then IQ suffers a lot.
Good video Jan, but i have a suggestion. Since the R5 uses a dual-gain based sensor you can easily underexpose your shots by for example dropping ISO 16000 to ISO 8000 and then pulling those shots back up to a 'normal' exposure back in post. This will have no real negative effect on your image quality, the sensor handles it very well on the R5. This offers you the ability to for example shoot dark scenes with low iso at high shutter speeds and still get great shots or to shoot bright scenes underexposed by say two-three stops and then pulling them back in post, all this without any sacrifices to image quality. Try it out! :)
in saying that, the images are already a bit underexposed I suppose. But doing it more has degraded image quality when I tried

@@jan_wegener really, you get more nose in doing so ? that's strange. It should not happen if you're shooting with the R5. I shot a Halloween event in the dark recently using the 100-500 and to avoid getting a lot of noise i dropped the iso to half of what it would normally would have been. Results looked clean and great after post processing and pulling those exposures back up to normal. Perhaps it's related to DxO PhotoLab which i'm using and if you are using with Lightroom then that could cause a problem or two especially with noise which is one of it's weaker sides.
I wonder what the performance will be like with the Canon R7 when sit comes out. Years ago I had the 7D Mk II and the 100-400mm Mk II lens. Also had the Sigma 150-600mm C lens which was also very good. That lens was just crazy sharp. I have micro 4/3 gear now, lighter and easier to get around. Full frame bodies are just way to pricey for me.
@@OpenFilmmaker I have the Panasonic G9 bought used and the Olympus E-M1x (after the price drop). The Panasonic/Leica 100-400mm & the Panasonic/Leica 12-60mm
Sigma 150-600 razor sharp? I never saw it in real life, but the images and comparisons i saw, literally most of the competition was sharper. Thats (and the AF-C breathing on mirrorless) held me back from buying the sigma 150-600. With TC the sharpness and CA gets even worse. I really wanted to avoid RF glass, but the RF 800 F11 was (for me) just a much better and more affordable choice. Also, i just upgraded a year ago to full frame because they got affordable (for a hobby photographer). My EOS RP costed 900€. Its just the RF glasses which are typically expensive (but at least very good IQ)

Looks like such a fun day to be out, Jan! Just seeing Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo's was a huge treat for me, and I definitely didn't get them down low. Maybe on a future visit. Pretty sure a 100-500mm will be in my kit eventually.
Yes, they're amazing creatures
love to hear more on why you did electronic shutter
I prefer the silence and the speed
I’ve been designing cameras for 25 years and can’t stomach inaccurate colors so I’m on a quest…
nice, I have been making some mixed profiles that work really well :)
I always enjoy watching your videos very much
Glad you like them!
Nicely done. Great pics. When you least expect it - expect it!
So true!
Always happy to see one of you're videos pop up
Awesome :) I wish i could make more, but it always takes me a while :D
I’ve ordered the r3 and the 100-500 but was hesitant to get a tele converter… I think you have convinced me !
Very curious where (and when!) you ordered the lens. They seems to be sold out all over the place 🤨
@@jacobgarvelink2441 Sorry I've only ordered it, through Australian retailer "Camera House" along with the canon r3. They are both on back order / pre-order. I don't expect either of them to arrive until next year at this stage. I am without a camera and going quite insane.
Sunstudios in Melbourne always had the odd one over last few months. They night even cut you a nice deal if you mention my name :)
wow what a video thanks jan. got my 100-500 a month a go and I am so happy with the results with the R5 soon I will get the extender one of the two still wandering which is best for me. again thanks
Thank you :)
I am a very proud 100-400 user, so yeah, I want the 100-500.
I wonder what is your video camera because your image quality is supetb. Always sharp and in focus.
Another R5 :)
Great. Yes, LR is much inferior when it comes to NR than Pure RAW which I use
Hey old friend!
Yes it's a great lens and it would be lovely to catch up again on day!
DXO Pure RAW is really a game changer for NR
@@jan_wegener I was also really impressed with the lens and capacities of the high ISO on the Eos R5
Great work--appreciate all the information that you have provided!!! Only down side is--it's costing me a bundle in new Canon RF equipment!!!!
haha! It's costing me a lot as well!
Great, how bless are your Country wiith all of thes so beautiful wilds birds, Thisi lens is amazing, it make a great job with the Canon R5 is the perfect complement. Thank you for share it.
Thanks! Some great birds here
Nice shots and good editing
Thanks a lot 😊
Great video and well timed. My RF100-500 has been backordered for a few months and looking forward to its arrival. Thank you for explaining the higher fstop results - my concern.
Glad it was helpful! Hope you get your lens, soon!
a spectacle of images! hugs from Brazil
Thanks :)
Gorgeous photos Jan and terrific review! Thanks so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing video and really great shots. Going to have to look at your editing techniques since I'm somewhat a newbie. Thank you for sharing your content.
Awesome, thank you!
Could you shoot a night football game under stadium lights with this?
Formidable video Jan!
Thank you very much!
Really enjoyable video Jan. Amazing images.
Many thanks!
Great video Jan! I have this combo and it works great with close subjects but when the bird is small inside a forest a bit far away and I just want a clear shot of for ID purposes, I find that it doesn't focus even with spot AF on the bird. What could be the issue? Am I just asking too much?
Probably
An excellent video as always, I use the same combination and totally agree with you on low light results ..
Great to hear!
Hello Jan and thanks for all the videos you support us with.
Where did you purchase the camoflage cover for the Rf 100-500?
I don't have one on mine, but I usually use lenscoat for all my lenses
Great work. I never have the nerve to put a 2x on my 100-500 because of lesser image quality. I am fine with 1.4x. Your editing technique is great.
Yes, it's not the sharpest, but you can make it work sometimes
@@jan_wegener so when you have the 2x on you cant zoom ou5 at all? You are stuck at 500mm?
@@wcsdiaries 600-1000mm
Tanks for this interesting video. I start to think about buying the RF 100-500 and sell the 100-400...
That extra 100mm is quite nice :)
Great video. I got the R5+100-500 and the 1,4 extender and it works very Good.
Great to hear!
i am interested in the same combo. does it provide enough reach, even for tiny birds? do you still need to crop all your images? how about the background blur at 700mm f/10?
But I did quite a bit of testing in controlled environment and figured that it is indeed the case.
wow it's really very beautiful👍👍👍👍😊😊😊😊
Thank you so much 😀
@@jan_wegener you're welcome🙏🙏🙏🙏😊😊😊
Very nice video to the point where f 7.1 is concern for wildlife photography. I m considering shifting from Tamron 150-600mm G2 to Canon RF 100-500mm on R5 body since long. But 7.1 is the only stopping factor.
6.3 and 7.1 is essentially the same
@@jan_wegener OK, In low light photography, Does high ISO @ say one or two stop resiprocattively impact quality of image?
@@sameerkbhatt yes the higher the worse. But between 6.3 and 7.1 is only 1/3 of a stop
@@jan_wegener Thanx for valuable information.
Great video again. Very useful.
Glad you think so!
Very good combo indeed !
yep!
Nice vídeo! Thanks a lot!
Such amazing and entertaining birds and amazing footage!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome, thank you!
Great video! Question how do you handle noise at so high ISO?
Remove it with dxo pure raw 4 or Adobe enhance
Great and informative video, with some amazing photos. Very happy to see that this combination is working this well, because i will buy the same combo. Thanks again for once again sharing your experience with us. Greetings from a Norwegian in Brazil
Great to hear!
I would think that the R5 will be hugely improved in terms of ISO.
one uestion, do you think could be a good lens for landscpaes and seascapes with big waves even in low light?
or a 70-200 f2.8 coul be better.
best regrads Jose
Hi Jan, great video. I ordered this lens a while ago and can't wait to get it. Do you think I'd get the same incredible results with my EOS R like you with the R5?
The IQ will be good, AF and noise level won't be as good.
@@jan_wegener okay, too sad, but that's what I thought. But I guess I'll still be happy with this lens. I'll just try it. Thank you and greetings from Germany
@@janabalejko It will still be great
Jan, is that kinda bird reservation where you made this video or is that population density normal, if you’re living close to however-that-kind-of-bush-and-forest-land-is-called and walk a few metres from the street into the wilderness? That’s awesome,
That was a small reserve
Excellent video as always, very informative.
Glad you enjoyed it
Jan, great video and information. Question would the Canon RF 800mm work well? Too?
I think it would struggle a bit more, but still do ok.
Great video great kit buddy, love the fact we use the same kit as watching your videos help me get the best from it all! 😉👍🏼👌Great pics and video and well presented as always..Enjoying your masterclass by the way too.... all the best JP
Great to hear! Thank you!
Hi Jan! Iwe had this lens now for about a months, im really pleased, tho id wish it was abit sharper, so I have started looking into getting a used 500 or 600 prime ef.. witch one would you say is the sharpest out of the 6 that exists? :)
You don't use the inbuilt 1.6 crop? very impressed with the extenders quality.... definitely getting the 100-500 now
No, I have actually never used it. I prefer to crop the image after if need be
Great photos
Thank you! Cheers!
One word.. Awesome 👍
Thank you so much 😀
Thanks for this timely video as I’m on the verge of pulling the plug and getting the RF 100-500 over the EF-100-490.
I was looking for your audio equipment and can’t see it? You seem to get decent bird sounds. How do you get this level of audio?
most were with the internal mic tbh. When there's no wind, it can do a decent job
Great video Jan.
The results are surprisingly stunning.
I guess you are using the RF extenders, right?
Yes, only those will work
Really good video Jan.

Mainly by running the RAW through DXO Pure RAW
@@jan_wegener Thanks for this. Clearly missed that one. Will watch shortly. Note however I tried DXO Pure Raw recently and didn't like it. Seemed to be all or nothing with no adjustments and it oversharpened the image unless the optics module was disabled
@@stephenburch9178 you can turn the sharpening off now. There are no settings, but it does well
@@jan_wegener ok thanks. Perhaps I should take another look. Snag is my 30day trial has expired so I'd have to buy it!

@@Bassbarbie hopefully soon!
Tnx for sharing - maybe also when you put the EXIF data also list the actual focal length, tnx in advance
Good point, but I am pretty sure in these cases it was always maxed out.
If you could have only one TC for the 100-500 RF, which would you choose, the 1.4 or 2.0?
Your vids teach me everything I know so far. Thanks
Probably 1.4 due to fstop
@@jan_wegener Thanks, again
Try it out! :)
I have tried this and it doesn't work for me. The darker image has definitely more noise than a properly exposed higher ISO one
in saying that, the images are already a bit underexposed I suppose.
@ Yes, if you run Deep prime, it will denoise heavily.
What camera + lens do you use for M43?
Jan, thank you so much for this video. I shoot with the R6 + 100-500mm lens. I shoot birds too. I have the RF 1.4x but have only tried it out twice. I've been too scared that I won't get quality photos using it. You have changed my mind! I'm going to head out today to try it. Happy Shooting! -Cathy from NJ, USA
Awesome! I wouldn't use it when not necessary, but it definitely works quite well when used the right way.
