This hobby made me almost wanna cry but I didn't give up. I kept watching Bardwell videos and now I built about 5 or 6 drones. It's addictive once you learn it.

I don’t quite have the same background. But I started building projects with Arduino at 8. Got my first drone for Christmas when I was 12. So I gained quite a bit of electrical knowledge and the properties of how a quadcopter flies. I got into FPV right around my 19th birthday and it felt so familiar. I spent 10 hours in a sim, bought a 2s bnf, then built my own 6s 5”. The best advice I could give is learn to solder and build projects on a $20 Arduino board before tackling a $100+ FC and ESC combo. It’s better than a solder board because you learn how electricity works and it’s cheaper than a quad stack.
I'm new to fpv and the only time I got smoke was when I stupidly put the esc upside down. Tightening the parts, the capacitors of the esc touched the carbon fiber plate underneath and voila!!! I got a plate of Esc bbq well done.
VIFLY Shortsaver 2 I use that on every build to first power the quad. And it works amazing well, not to mention it makes binding to the receiver so much easier. I had a speck, I mean a quarter size grain of salt piece of solder that had bridged two pads during the build and this thing detected it and saved a would-be smoked FC. I had double, triple checked everything, and this speck of solder was so small I didn't see it, until the magnifier came into play. IMO one of the best devices made and a MUST have!
Agreed. It never saved me yet, but it will happen. Also it's way more comfortable plugin in the battery after soldering something knowing it will not end up in flames. :D
Having a very nerdy background as well, I used to put stuff together from scrap to save money and learn along the way (nearly not everything worked on the first or second attempt); I love how much I can relate to this story! Also, I find that it’s not always about what you already know at a job. It is about how you proceed to solve issues or search for the required information. Just take it one step at a time, and you will master it eventually!
When I got my first drone I had my dad solder the battery lead cuz I didn’t know how. He reversed the pos/neg so when I plugged it popped. He works on the electronics in the new x-59 nasa plane 😅
Same here JB. I started programming in 8th grade and then took two years of electronics in high school that also covered soldering and debugging circuits.
My KISS-Ultra V2 FC smocked as well:) yesterday w/o any explanation. It was flying build quad. I flew on it an hour before
Use your tester after every solder, and use a voltage checker, testing is so important. all connection must be corrected, its just bad wiring, it happens.
My smoke stopper has saved me at least 2 times.

I have use a 1S GNB27 battery, it is easy to plug the battery in backward and fried the AOI. Guess that way whoopfly 16 had discontinued the connector.
in my case i had the aio touching the carbon frame because of a missing spacer/nut underneath the aio

I have a shoe box of fried fc and esc - 90% of which were all my own fault in some way or another. Thank god that phase of my learning is over.
Schools should teach the basics of those stuff. Even about woodworking and others.
