They needed a 117 headliner and he's too scared to face Ilia so he vacated, 155 is too stacked to hold up till the end of the year, he could have fought Ilia then gone up to fight and Jack and kept his 55 belt. UFC gave him the options and he chose to run from Ilia, simple as that.

@@TechnicalFax0 Coz he wants every advantage he can get. Has no problem fighting short notice opponents but will never put himself in the same position. Dustin literally fought in March last year and the fight was announced in April after UFC 300, and scheduled in early June. So Dustin basically got a little over a month to prepare while Islam took no damage in the Volk fight the previous October. Ilia been training for Islam since last October, probably has a solid gameplan, and Islam knows this so he opts to fight an opponent who just had a five round war while he again has been resting since the Moicano fight in January where he got no damage.
Yeah Jon Jones been saying he'd move to 265 since 2013 when Cain was still champ, but he only did it when after Reyes whooped his ass and Blachowicz was next, making him realize his days were numbered anyhow, and he waited until prime Stipe and Ngannou were gone even then. Same now with Islam.
