Eisen has to be the most based dwarf I have ever seen. Everything that comes out of his mouth is pure gold. Also the ring, its been teased for so long now, cant wait for the reaction to the reveal. Finally, I'm starting to think Fern is the perverted one here. Definietly has covert pervert vibes.
Yeah. Fern is probably the "dirtiest" minded person of those 3. Though only relatively. Frieren is almost ignorant of everything romantic and sexual. Especially the latter part. She repeats what she heard 1000 years ago. Stark is very innocent when it comes to romantic and sexual topics. He might know about them or not, but probably does - it just doesn't parse to him why he should treat it differently than anything else. And Fern sees them everywhere. Even though her knowledge of it is superficial (which is a slight counter-point to "covert pervert" thing). But she "suspects" it everywhere.
@@eress4 Possible. Though her "perv" thing feels like it's either from book or stories. Maybe influenced by stuff she saw when she was very young but didn't understand very well. And I don't think that anyone talked to her seriously about that. At least anyone with possible knowledge. I know such behavior (and it's opposite), since when I was in school we didn't have sex-ed yet. You had girls who thought that talking to boys was bad, because of the off-hand remarks they've heard from the grandma or something like that. And you has girls who didn't mind for example changing clothes with boys present. And I'm talking around the age of 12-14 y.o. So not because they had "childhood innocence". And honestly boys were even worse - it's just that society doesn't view guys without a shirt as something horrible. Nor do we have to deal with stuff like periods. We have other stuff to deal with, but what society deems as acceptable and what it views as what is okay and what is not differs vastly. So even though on average boys had even less knowledge, we didn't have as much problems because of it.
I like how different languages give wildly different interpretations of how a line of dialogue is spoken. In English, you had the Californian frat boy line of "I'm hella grateful". But in the French sub, it is "Merci et bisous." Which basically means "Thanks XOXO", which is just very casual and informal and meant for relatives.
Japanese formal/archaic kneeling often rotate the feet inward from what I have seen in media and some old photos. not as common in modern days is what I've heard from friends.

The answer to the seiza position is, mostly yes, maybe not as extreme as it looks on slow mo on that scene, but that position forces your feet to be almost completely horizontal, or bent to the inside
My ankles do in fact turn inward. It's how I would normally sit in that position--trying to turn them outward was unpleasant. I don't know if Stark's levity is what I would consider his selling point. He's kind--and not at all self-absorbed. Very similar to Fern's perception of Heiter.
@@lynpotter6471 I think the ankles the wrong way as she drops down is more likely a detail that was messed up in. Clean-up . It would have been a small line that would have hinted at the crease of the top of the foot and at that scale could have been easy to read as a construction line. That F has her feet splayed out in the next scene lends credence that this is more likely a clean-up error..
Man, this is where (17:00) any bad animation would fall apart. When you examine it frame by frame like that, they can't hide any shortcuts. 😅 To that point, this show so far, each frame looks natural

49:49 All that but ALSO, it just may be that this sword was forged to deal with another specific world ending threat, and the Demon King was not it. With the introduction to Kraft and now the hero sword, it just shows how much of a team effort it is to keep the world from ending, even if history forgets all about it. Like, the chosen one MAY be needed in the future, but even getting to that point is only possible because a bunch of nameless and forgotten people pulled their damn weight, prophecy or not.

Thank you for your reaction, I really like your view about 'the sword stares at Stark as if it is judging'. Now I understand how meaningful the huge humburg steaks scene is, Stark judged himself and then realized he was loved (or at least complimented) by both Eisen and Stoltz
I suppose, the previous claim was that he haven't returned in the anime yet. However, as an anime only I am quite delighted to hear that we'll be seing Kraft, after hearing that he won't.
I like to read the whole "Hero Sword" situation like this: Only someone who is told "You're not the one" and still has the drive, determination and strength of will to continue on will be able to defeat the Demon King. The sword in the stone can't be pulled out by anyone, and is there to serve as a test, to find people who can be told they don't have the power to do something, but have it in them to try it anyways. People who make their own path, their own destiny, etc. That's my take on it, anyways. Other people have mentioned that "the hero who will drive off the great calamity bent on destroying this world" may not have referenced the Hero/Demon King, but something that hasn't happened yet. That may be cool too, but I still like my idea.
I hadn't thought of this but I LOVE this take. That said, I don't believe the Demon King was ever "bent on destroying the world", or he'd have more presence in the story than he does. That leads me to believe that the prophecy is referring to something else, as the sword itself has some divine/holy power that attracts monsters to it, meaning it's not just a super heavy object. I think an artifact of such power could serve both the prophecy's described purpose and also be a test of conviction before that purpose is needed. I have a theory that the emphasis on Stark being the one to see the sword, and that being a lead-in to his brother who is his hero, is double foreshadowing: one to his backstory and that he believes his brother might've been worthy of it, and two that he will likely be the one to use the sword should a situation that requires it unfold, thus stepping into becoming his own hero. The hero party is full of people who have traits that run counter to their roles (ex. fearful Eisen, drunk Heiter, undriven Frieren, etc.), so I can think of nothing more fitting for Stark's final arc than to have the savior of prophecy not be of the Hero class Himmel is implied to be, but a Warrior. Stark is already shown to be the most like Himmel of the people we've seen, so he wouldn't be a Hero by title but a hero of the people all the same.
Remember: The Hero who will save the world from Destruction will get the sword. The Demon King's been around at least a thousand years. The world didn't get destroyed, if the DK would have done it eventually... what was he waiting for?! So, the characters saying Himmel saved the world and brought peace really mean he saved Humanity and brought peace to Humans.
ok one thing i didn't see you talking about is the awesome hand-animated Serie in the Frieren opening. she is walking and everthing around her is being animated so wonderfully, it's the most memorable thing in the show because it's just at the start of it!

@@3BSkyen cool. Also I KNEW you were gonna lose the plot when you got to the Stark jacket scene!! :). I mean, they just DIDNT need to go quite THAT hard !!!! BTW. In regard to it possibly being CG there is a a REASON you rarely if EVER see characters putting clothes on or off in CG animation or in games and that’s because it’s almost impossible to do Simulation is getting good at flapping cloth round pipes (arms) and all that, but the custom Riggs that would be need to control even a simple jacket-on sequence would push most systems/engines beyond their capability. Never mind the COST. It would be cheaper and easier to MAKE his jacket and film someone putting it on that way and then doing roto’ or using it as exacting reference.. Filmed reference HAD to have been used. The perfection of all those pops and pulls is just that . Perfection. Same when Stark is riding the dragon’s face (not a phrase I expected I’d be typing today..) As the camera is fixed to the head the movements would not be that readable in and of themselves, at least the violence of them. It’s ALL in physical reaction in Stark’s mass and limbs, which is different from what a sprung physics rag-doll simulation would give. If it were me I’d be tempted to strap a stunt performer to the business end of a JCB and go hog wild shaking him around . And yes, people have NO IDEA how hard it is to rotate complex objects in 3D by hand. Heck , rotating a simple cube round ONE axis is pigging difficult !! Point wobble, line wobble, volume drift…. (I’m trying to learn Procreate Dreams) And I just got to say I love your content like this. It’s one thing to watch stuff like this and realise it’s extra, it’s completely different to know WHY it’s extra and revel in that detail. I went back and watched the jacket like 10 times . Then screen grabbed the secuence and posted it on the channels at work ranting like a loon at how damn extra it was… Please stay exactly this nerdy Stephen .
Sitting like Frieren did from that jumpy position - yes, it is doable (in fact it's Japanese), you just have to do it consciously and you have to practice. BTW this is probably as hardcore as "fan service" gets in this series. And all of that scene was animated magnificently. I love the child-like behavior from Frieren, because it's good to have our inner child run around for a while at least sometimes. This is different than Frieren being a loli - she isn't. She is petite and mature. Just on some topics she is ignorant and she doesn't care whether her child like behavior that she shows from time to time is looked down on. Stoltz - either "magnificent" or "proud". I had a lot more to say, but I'll let you cook for another couple of episodes. And people stop spoiling stuff to him.
As an autistic person I relate so much to frieren for stuff like that, behaviour of excitement being interpreted as childish but being seen as cold when not showing outward emotions.
@@Laezar1 Yes. It is understandable. Whether you are on Neurodivergent like you, Neurotypical like me (I was not diagnosed with anything on "spectrum", though I do wonder if my anxiety and depression count - because people use various definitions of ND), or "Neurounknown" but living for over 1000 years with most of that time being alone. I used to get quite excited for things that others found weird. I wish I could get excited still from time to time. Besides - "maturing" doesn't mean you should forget how you thought as a child or a teenager. And honestly people shouldn't care about opinions of other when it comes to what is appropriate and what is inappropriate behavior as long as it doesn't harm anyone. Especially when the example is "being childish", because you kick your legs while humming when you are relaxing while reading book on the bed. Like this is the lowest bar possible and I don't know why anyone would ever belittle her for that. Though I did see some nasty comments and even couple reactions that weren't nice in reference to this moment (I watched several hundred videos on YT about Frieren and over 50 reactions - probably more than in all my life combined ever before that on all Anime). But then there are people who think "peak Masculinity" is never showing emotions to the ones you love. And while not showing outward emotion can look "cold", it is usually superficial interpretation. Like if someone makes that judgement based on 1 minute interaction - I don't fault them too much (even though they should know better), but if they know a person for months who's characteristic is that they don't show emotions outwardly and think they are cold, just because of that... perhaps they also have trouble with understanding others. Maybe. But regardless it is a superficial conclusion. Of course such person might really be "cold", but that would be based on much more than "not showing emotions". Sorry I tend to write really long replies, so I forced myself to cutoff here. I don't know if I used terms correctly (I have some American friends who are Neurodivergent, but when this word was used for the first time, it was usually referring to people on spectrum. Nowadays some people say that it refers to all conditions that aren't Neurotypical - including mental illnesses and such. Though not all mental issues - which has me confused as heck) and I sure as heck hope that "Neurounknown" isn't used as some kind of slur. I only meant that we don't know whether she is someone who would be considered Neurotypical for an elf.
@@jannegrey593 Never heard "Neurounknown" before =p But neurodiversity isn't just autism you're right, although it can be hard to delineate cause one the one hand gatekeeping sucks on the other there is a distinct shared experience of alienation by people who don't fit within neurotypical norm and I'd say that's probably a good way to tell if someone can be called neurodivergent or not. Anxiety and depression definitely fit as conditions as part of neurodiversity though (as in they are deviation of how the brain typically function) but using the label neurodivergent or not will vary depending on that person's personal experience. (does it affects their relationship with others for exemple). As for the maturity thing, I'm aware haha, I just wanted to point out how relateable it is, but I'd say frieren is definitely autistic coded and probably with some intentionality, there are just a lot of parallels. Both in how she expresses her emotions, the way she forms relationships, the way she lights up for specific things that are of interest to her, the way she experiences time differently (yes it's an elf thing, but I also relate to experiencing temporality on another pace than most people), or even if it's less prominent sensitivity to certain things (cold in particular) and her fucked up sleep schedule. It's hard to express cause it's a lot of subtle things and it's not necessarily the most stereotypical autism presentation either, but any autistic people I've seen watch frieren do feel that kinship. And importantly other elf characters in the serie (pun not intended) don't feel like that so it's clearly not exclusively an elf thing.
@@Laezar1 Thank You and I mostly agree. Just counterpoint to last sentence - sample of 3 is not enough. Though given their population size they might have to redefine what is typical for them. And certainly it doesn't make Frieren less valid to be relatable to. And she certainly is autistically coded. Thank you for education. My anxiety at some points in my life makes it impossible to get out of bed even (I'm afraid that, because I gained weight the floor will not be able to handle it - logically I know this isn't the case, but this isn't the realm of logical - especially not in the middle of panic attack). I apologize for late response. YT didn't notify me of it.
@@jannegrey593 It's fine don't worry! And you're right that 3 isn't a big sample if we're talking real life, but for a work of fiction there is author intent behind it, they decide what the three elves they show will be like so I think it's fair to extrapolate a bit from that. In that case the author showing that all elves do struggle with the length of their lifespan in some way but their personalities are varied.

"What is this all, Nazi?" Not Nazi, Prussian. The story weighs a lot of Germanic tales and traditions, just as all the character names are German words, and the Nazis just appropriated a lot of Prussian attitudes and trappings to tart up their philosophy and make it more appealing. Same way they use red MAGA hats here in the U.S.

@@3BSkyen cool. Also I KNEW you were gonna lose the plot when you got to the Stark jacket scene!! :). I mean, they just DIDNT need to go quite THAT hard !!!!
BTW. In regard to it possibly being CG there is a a REASON you rarely if EVER see characters putting clothes on or off in CG animation or in games and that’s because it’s almost impossible to do
Simulation is getting good at flapping cloth round pipes (arms) and all that, but the custom Riggs that would be need to control even a simple jacket-on sequence would push most systems/engines beyond their capability.
(I’m trying to learn Procreate Dreams)
And I just got to say I love your content like this. It’s one thing to watch stuff like this and realise it’s extra, it’s completely different to know WHY it’s extra and revel in that detail. I went back and watched the jacket like 10 times . Then screen grabbed the secuence and posted it on the channels at work ranting like a loon at how damn extra it was…
Please stay exactly this nerdy
Stephen .
@@jannegrey593 Never heard "Neurounknown" before =p
But neurodiversity isn't just autism you're right, although it can be hard to delineate cause one the one hand gatekeeping sucks on the other there is a distinct shared experience of alienation by people who don't fit within neurotypical norm and I'd say that's probably a good way to tell if someone can be called neurodivergent or not.
Please - we need more Frieren. IDK why you stopped doing watch-a-longs for it. I hope you're fine.
there are still so many good animation in the other half of the season that I want to know 3B Skyen's thoughts
@@supersquid1005 Same.
That moment when someone sees Excalibur and thinks Zelda
Skyen, not a fan of the Divine Right of Kings xD
24:49 There it is. The first of many.
The feels man
Hey! Did you get bored of Frieren? I was really enjoying following your videos but haven't seen them in awhile!
The sword is a pretty poor judge of heroes it seem
28:06 Yeah, its something most Japanese people can do since sitting on your knees in enforced from a young age. You bend your feet like that so it becomes like a seat for your butt.
please react to Epithet Erased some time, it's really good and i think you'll really enjoy it, it's another youtube indie "animation" and season one is done
"What is this all, Nazi?"
Not Nazi, Prussian. The story weighs a lot of Germanic tales and traditions, just as all the character names are German words, and the Nazis just appropriated a lot of Prussian attitudes and trappings to tart up their philosophy and make it more appealing. Same way they use red MAGA hats here in the U.S.
So you have a Himmel, a fake hero
Heiter, a corrupt priest
Eisen, a cowardly warrior
and Freiren, a mediocre mage
Yeah, Dragon Quest vibes. Totally not Camelot and King Arthor.
35:10what was that 🤣🤣? suddenly german
Hello sorry if I’m being rude but where did you go
