That last verse is hilarious: out on tour with rip rig and panic I’m wishing that richey manic would show up on my door and come on home to his little welsh palace and an EMI tour EMI is so wonderful to work for i would like to get a pension plan and grow old in the music business
I think I've just found my favourite version of this, thank you for locating this and uploading. There's a real historical component here apart from both artists being similar of their time; Malkmus and McNew actually worked at a college radio together (so I read somewhere). Enjoy Stephen's improvisation aswell.
+TheEthos yea they were DJs at UVA and McNew was I believe briefly involved w/ a project called Ectoslavia that also had Malkmus and maybe David Berman and/or Bob Nastanovich
+vacantmoon I'd like to think if I was born 15 years earlier I would be an absolute fiend listening to my Lo-Fi stuff and immersed in all these brief, eccentric details. Sadly though I was born almost three after this performance and not in Northern America. But with that said my generation of misanthropic adolescents isn't bad whatsoever, we have superb acts inspired by both these classic monikers and still retrain Malkmus & Yo La Tengo. I'm guessing that this was your time though?
I want to make some compositions of mine sound like this what do I do? Drink Budweiser and record it on tape? (i'm not joking, home musicians pls pass me some tips or softwares)
Put a guitar boost pedal on the vocals. The guitar is pretty wonky so id do a vibrato pedal on there with high depth but low speed. Pretty much a soft overdrive on everything.
@@vacantmoon Yeah I was kind of joking. But you know they video recorded shows before cell phones right? Imagination is great. But if it was THAT great, we wouldn't have bootleg videos.
@@vacantmoon Hah. Oops. Yeah youtube has made me greedy. It's crazy to find a video of a show you were AT and you didn't know they were recording it! Especially helps when you don't exactly remember being there, but you know it was a great time.
@@matteframe for sure...I have vivid memories of seeing/meeting SM & Pavement in 94 but when I stumbled upon a vid of the actual show a few years ago it was kinda mind blowing to step back in time like that
clearly their vocals are different, but yeah some of maccy d's guitar playing has this twangy sound, the beginning sounds just like him, you know - that dreamy/beachy sound, I agree man

I was pleasantly surprised by the Richey Manic reference.
my goodness. This tone, is THE tone.
Yo La Tengo should be the only backing band allowed.

This is damn good. Thanks

Anybody have any more info on this recording? Are we sure that this is Yo La Tengo? I never new that they jammed with one another.
Ryan Hailey it's Yo La Tengo. Malkmus and James McNew were actually in a band called Ectoslavia while at UVA in the 80s.
yeah, you can hear Malky Malk say "go ahead James", around the middle.

If you’re not joking, it’s even worse.
Alternate tunings work really well too

Everyone knows rollerblades are better than skateboards.
Cool version?
Wheres the god damned video?
Lol...1995 was pre stare-at-your-screen-all-day technology thankfully. Time to fire up the ol' imagination!

@@anthonym8205 I hate that we'll never know. Charley Downey died last night in a tragic motorbike accident.
