    I really think that this kind of view is very restrictive.
    On the one hand I can see Eric's basic point which is that the web is all about being accessible to as many people as possible, but I don't really buy into this idea that the web is all about content (specifically text content), after all without CSS or JavaScript you're going to be left with text and images.
    I think that the answer here is to ensure that JavaScript and CSS are well supported and reliable as there are a lot of value in visual design as well as interactivity.
    I think overall the tone here was quite limiting and pessimistic, imagine how boring the web would be if we were still thinking along these lines? Where would the evolution be? Perhaps it'd be so boring that people would just focus on native apps to the exclusion of all else
