    Thanks for that information Ellen. Fear will always be part of our lives as humans but We've got to put our TRUST IN GOD IN WHATEVER WE DO AND NO MATTER WHAT COMES OUR WAY, WE'LL STILL MAKE IT. Thanks for sharing your experiences, it's an Inspiration to many.😀

    Hello Ellen, i am an Tattooist, i draw every Motif , and I also paint . what you are saying in your video is exactly how it felt for me, I started out with a Dream, then the dream became work, People waiting, preasure, it took all the Fun out. Now, what I do is i take ONE whole day off ( I call it my Rebell day, I am sorry,not sorry-you have to wait one more day ) and do strictly everything for fun. it works for me , and some of the best drawings and paintings came from that . Congratulations on your 7th year!!!

    This is so insightful! I actually hired an accountant to look after my bookkeeping because it was something that was stressing me out all the time lol! and I hired an employee to come print & pack my etsy orders once or twice a week and it's freed up sooo much of my time!

    One of the things I think is so valuable .. is the collaboration between artists .. by sharing information, ideas, etc. as it greatly increases all our potential. Artists are also teachers, magicians with a wand brush, leaders who speak through their work to the eye/mind of the public. It's about Art awareness. Great video!

    The main reason I hate commissions. Once you make your hobby work it's no longer as much fun.
    You do good work though so stay strong and congrats on 7 years 👍

      I became a full time artist the beginning of Jan 2021 and I immediately got consumed in commissions. I HATE IT. They take me forever to complete. The canvas stares at me and I get resentful of the project. I crave working on my own pieces. They don't bring in as much money, but at that point with taking so long to finish large commissions I could've gone several smaller personal projects and made good/okay/living money to pay bills and enjoy myself.

    Ellen, Thank you for your videos and your talent for sharing and, of course, for your artistic talents as well. I have recently quit my corporate job to devote 100% of me to my art. This is something that I have wanted to do since I was a little girl. I am now at the age where if I am going to try to create a business it must be now so that if I fail, or if I decide this isn't something I don't want to do I will have time to pivot and get another job. The years are going so fast! Your videos and advice mean the world to me as I begin this journey. The words 'Thank you" seem inadequate.

    Congratulations and thank you so much for the reality check. So many artists showcase only their successes. There nothing wrong with that per se, but it's not an accurate portrayal of the day to day struggle that even crazy talented artists experience. Also, "Get over yourself and get on with it." is excellent advice.

    I hav e found from knowing you threw your art that it’s more than work for you. The way you share and how very caring you are to others including me you are going to have to admit it’s not just for work or business. Your skill is without question. Your. Compassion reaches us all. I think you need to do exactly what you said in this video and talk to yourself that it’s all art. Not everyone can accomplish all the facets you have. So my friend it’s not work it’s a blessing

    Congrats on a huge accomplishment and being so successful. Administrative-business work hasn't been a problem for me. It really is sharing a part of myself with the world. That us being vulnerable and being "accepted". Something that has been very difficult all my life. The thought that came to me when you were talking about showing your work and getting your first no, if we taught each other how to open door to adjacent possibilites, just because your work wasn't accepted at so and so place, is that you actually opened another door or window for something that you didnt imagine before. Then led to etsy. Remember when trying new things of creativity is that you "knock" for other avenues to be opened. I wish I would have known that sooner, it was when I became an out of closet Oracle that these ideas and concepts became my understanding. Everything is with time and lessons learned so that others dont have to go through and much of pain and suffering or give them an alternative to their closet or attic that they will feel liberated to keep creating. Ty for your vid. I look forward to working with your Oracle cards. ⭐⭐⭐excited ⭐⭐⭐

    Thanks for sharing your own experience. Its very important for me listening someone so talented like you,talking about negative aspects of the process of being. artist. Many people thinks that working as a painter is fun or easy but it is not, actually is a hard and painfull way. I have been painting for many years , ocasionally selling my work and teaching art ,but its hard to me believe in myself. Thats the real problem, as you coment in the video. Sorry about my english. For an LLC - simple paperwork, in AZ you can go and download the paperwork from the AZ Corporate Commission, You will have to find out the entity in your state. You fill the form out, go to their office, pay your fee and voila - it is very simple. You do not need a lawyer to do this - just google LLC. You do need to keep all receipts, income, taxes you charge, etc, but that is being a business person. Get Quickbooks. - Congrats on your 7-year.

    Hi Ellen, you are very generous sharing so much and, I, we, hope you know how much you are appreciated.
    I listen to your posts and know exactly what you mean because your experience is exactly what the reality is. It is a big help hearing from others just what to expect.
    So, you’ve been a successful artist for 7 years? Does successful mean it has been worth the trouble or, it has only been paying the bills?
    I’ve listened to enough of your videos to wonder what the heck “successful” amounts to. If going into your studio to work is a drag, where is the success in that? If you are not excited to be in your studio then, isn’t the experience just about paying bills?
    I’m not asking to be argumentative. I’m asking because these are the questions I ask myself also. To be honest, I have not figured out the answers and, I see that these very issues are things that you struggle with too...even though you say you are succeeding now.
    I’ve been fascinated with painting my whole life. But, it has always been difficult for me to commit to it because it requires too much. At least, to accomplish the kind of painting that gets me emotionally fired up. I’ve heard you say that the business of being an artist prevents you from inventing...or, something to that affect.
    I lived in Taos, NM for 35 years and was involved for long periods in the art world. Inevitably, it would become a tiresome endeavor and, I would leave it to pursue something else in order to maintain my sense of integrity and rationale. I would always be drawn back into the art realm because the essence of painting is so emotionally satisfying to me. The business side of art...not so much.
    I keep realizing that the business of art is a total sacrifice of the spirit of art that is so attractive to so many art loving people.
    I wonder if it’s possible to be an artist without having to sacrifice your values as an artist or to sell your soul just to keep the business of art going for yourself?
    There is something I saw happening in Santa Fe and Taos that has always seemed amazing to me. Some people don’t seem to struggle at all. They start off and quickly seem to get picked up and carried along almost effortlessly. Others work and struggle seemingly, forever.
    I wonder if you have ever noticed this in your interactions with the art world and, if you could share your insight. Thanks so much. Glenn

    • @EllenBrennemanStudio
      @EllenBrennemanStudio  4 года назад +1

      Hi, Glenn. I really must answer 'Yes' to both of your questions. Yes, it has been worth all of the ups and downs that comes with this line of work. But when I also must pay my bills I have to think like a businesswoman, not an artist. I wear many hats and not all of them are fun and exciting. The word 'success' is such a personal thing and will mean something different for everyone. My definition of success as it pertains to me is being able to support myself and be my own boss, while creating work that pleases me (and hopefully, others). The unpleasant tasks that I have to do, although frustrating, would not cause me to walk away from my career. It can be difficult to maintain a balance but it's something I strive to do for myself every day. This is why I don't post videos on a timely basis here on RUclips but rather only when I feel I have something significant to share. I don't post on IG as much as I should, either. Am I sacrificing followers? Absolutely, but the moment I stop protecting my creative process (and sanity), that's when I've sold my soul for the sake of my business. So much more I could share but hopefully this answers your question :) Thank you for your thought-provoking comment!

    I had my prints nice and neat in plastic sleeves, cards. It was a few months ago that a woman scoffed at me and just laughed at me when I asked if she sold my type of art in her friend's store. She said, "oh cards, ha." I said I have other prints if you want to see them. She went to talk to someone else. It made me sick to my stomach, after I poured myself into those pieces. I still have them in the same bin even though people say they love my work. She was just so rude. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @EllenBrennemanStudio
      @EllenBrennemanStudio  5 лет назад +3

      Giselle, I am so sorry that happened to you. Some people can be so hurtful, especially when they are in a place of power. Please know it had more to do with HER and less to do with you. ❤️ At my first art fair I had someone come up to me and ask how much my 8x10 prints were. When I told him he just shook his head and said, 'No. No. No one will EVER pay that for THIS.' I was horrified and wanted to crawl into a corner! When I arrived home that night I told this story to an artist friend of mine who's work was phenomenal and she was already quite successful. She had an art show the previous weekend and her work was insulted. At that moment I thought, 'well, if someone finds something wrong with her work too, then I shouldn't feel bad.' As time passed I realized that there will always be 'that person' who will go out of their way to make someone else feel bad so they can feel better about themselves. You just keep on doing what you do and you'll succeed! ✨

    Congratulations Ellen! That is awesome :) I know its been 2 years but that fact that you made this is still so encouraging to me now.
    I have a question (sorry if you've answered this before) I'm sure every week is different depending on the projects you need to work on, but I guess on average do you know how many hours per week you spend working? :) I also think its really good to take classes outside, I think I always want to have a class going on, or some meet up situation happening. I feel like if you don't fill yourself up with life, then you cant give very much. Making art in seclusion without any community had me very unmotivated for awhile until this year when I decided to take classes again. Im still an introvert, but I think I personally need that support and a little bit of healthy competition.

      Thank you for your kind words, Stephanie - and for your question. If I had to break down my work schedule for this year I'd say that in all, I put in around 55 hours a week. 50% of that is painting, and the rest of the time is marketing, shipping and editing.
      I'm so glad you decided to take classes again, and am glad to learn that you're finding them helpful!

    This is why I have an office at home - book keeping and listing, businessy stuff etc.. and I have a studio just for creating.
    Also why don't you increase your prices, and therefore block out time for creating for joy?

    Hi Ellen
    I'm really enjoying your videos. I have a similar history, lots of health problems......for me it looks like I'm never really going to be really healthy. I have not started a business yet, at the moment I'm trying to create artworks to sell and also to improve. Have you any advice about how to manage a business whilst having to deal with frequent illness? I was thinking that restricting myself to one online store and maybe a local gallery. I have also thought that perhaps doing artworks that could be done in chunks or relatively quickly to compensate for the times life sends a curve ball. I'd really appreciate your opinion. Many thanks for your generosity, Jane

      I think you have the right idea, Jane. Regardless of what anyone might say, you can only do what you can do. It's best to give 100% on one or two things than to struggle keeping up with four or five. Reaching out to local shops are a wonderful idea, especially. BEST of luck to you!

    I understand the best way to start a home business as an artist is to have my own website to have control but do I need to learn wordpress or can I hire a company to set up my own personal business webstie and have them manage it?
    Also, do I need a EIN number and is that what it means to have an LLC? or are they to separate things?
    I have a weebly site with nothing on it yet and they do use SquareSpace for sellinjg work on weebly but even there do I need an EIN and my own website, and LLC?

    Glad to see you succeeding but agree with previous statement that nothing takes the joy out of a passtime faster than making it into a business. The best setting is if you have a partne spouse etc r who handles the business side. I don't see that LLC would be necessary for a fine artist. It's not like you're selling anything that is consumed, could be used in a potentially dangerous way etc, unless possibly you have customers in your home, and even then a business insurance policy might be enough.

      Having a partner that can tackle the business side is a very good idea when it's possible, thank you for suggesting that! After having done my taxes this year I found that the biggest advantage to becoming an LLC was the tax breaks.

      I have been a seller on Etsy for over 6 years and find them reliable. I no longer sell my work on Amazon due to my artwork being stolen and used by other vendors. I have never sold on FineArtAmerica so I cannot comment on that platform. I hope this helps! ☺️

    Is LLC just registering your name business name for a small business or is an LLC that gives you a EIN Tax ID number?

    • @EllenBrennemanStudio
      @EllenBrennemanStudio  4 года назад

      There is more to it than that. I will link to the company I registered with so you can read about the requirements and benefits - and to see if it is for you: www.incfile.com

    Should one be an LLC when starting out or wait until they are making a real living as an artist?

    • @EllenBrennemanStudio
      @EllenBrennemanStudio  4 года назад

      It's always best to consult with a lawyer since everyone's situation is different, but for me, after waiting about 6 years, my financial advisor instructed me to do so because my income was at a level to where I could take advantage of the tax breaks. Another perk - it protects my assets.

    If it isn't something you want to do then pay someone else to do it. LLC doesn't really protect you that much, the only way to truly protect yourself you need to be a corporation.
