Perfect pop song, but i find the hard repeated drums pretty annoying. Many artists make that 'mistake'.
I'm not familiar with The Cure so I downloaded the song to see if you had a case. I've heard it before, and without going through their entire catalogue I have to believe you're right. I'm a music lover who personally likes catchy songs that hook me, and don't think artists typically set out to write them. It just seems that way to music conspiracy theorists. I'm sure there are Bowie Lovers who absolutely Hate The popular song "Young Americans" but after you listen to it you're Hooked!
It’s because the music Industry tells us what is “cool” and what is not. The cure had so many - so many awesome songs but the record industry won’t play or allow those tracks come to fruition back then. But the reason their other ones are more popular is because alternative scene was exploding on mtv and mtv 2 and the record companies couldn’t control it. Same with other great bands like echo and the bunny men. But because they weren’t like the crap they repeated every hour it didn’t fit. I don’t even listen to radio anymore. It doesn’t fit society anymore. Just listen to what’s on the radio today and go to RUclips. It’s non stop this stuff sucks or if you go to bands like the cure non stop “today’s music sucks compared to this” and even the youth of today say the same thing.
Oh and now you had to say the bottom of the top 40. Toss salt n peppa out the other ones should have been top 5 easily. Come on new order. What a great song and album.
Back in the late 90's I had a roommate that was a die hard stubborn "rocker". He refused and rejected any other music. While he was in college, he got a part time job as a security guard. One of his details was to work the Cure concert at Dodger stadium. After that shift, he became a die hard Cure fan.
Robert Smith and Mary Poole met at school when they were both 14 and neither of them ever dated anyone else. I don't really believe in soulmates but if two people ever were soulmates they're it.
My parents were in every grade together from kindergarten on. They just celebrated 51 years of being married. If their is ever a definition of soulmate it’s them. Maybe that’s why I never got married. 🤣
Best concert I ever attended was The Cure at Fiddler's Green Amphitheater. Nothing else even comes close. I've seen Def Leppard, Metallica, Fleetwood Mac, Styx, Neil Diamond, U2, and many concerts that were compilations of many artists touring together that couldn't fill a stadium by themselves but when combined with other groups, could. Still The Cure was the greatest.
Love this @janetwright - Are you in the UK? My mum is 77 and had Cure mix tapes in her little car for years, now has an Alexa Cure-specific playlist, and has wanted to go to a Cure gig for years. I saw them in the US a few times, but now I’m back in the UK and mum had to go through lockdown alone after dad died, I swore to her If they tour in ‘22 we will go. Hope to see you there… :)
I’ve devoted my heart to music more than probably anything else in my life and if anyone asks me what my favorite band is I’ll say The Cure without hesitation. I’ve listened to more hours of The Cure than any other artist or group in my life.
My husband literally won my heart with this song. I promised I would run away with him and I did. It's STILL our song. I get goosebumps every time I hear it because it literally changed my life. It IS the perfect song.
Just Like Heaven is truly perfection, to me it encapsulates that feeling when you're in love with that one special person. It's incredible that everyone connects to that feeling as well
My favorite song in that record, "How Beautiful You Are" is even more romantic than "Just Like Heaven". The heartbreak in finding out that, rather than being "two souls as one", "no-one ever knows or loves another" is devastatingly beautiful. Although "Heaven" might be a truer account of Smith's actual personal life (to my knowledge, he's still married to that same high school sweetheart), "Beautiful" is closer to the intellectual and artistic heart of Robert Smith. He's not a nihilist or a misanthrope, rather, he lives in that twilight of wanting to believe that love exists and knowing that it doesn't for most. That, my friends, is romantic.
I’m heavy metal all day even play drums in metal bands but to me just like heaven is a masterpiece of song in every way,,truly touches the soul in a beautiful way and ALWAYS brings me to the place where everything is blissful and grand
The Cure is one of the greatest bands of all time hands down. Robert Smith is a brilliant lyricist, infusing witt with pure ear to ear smile inducing pop, but what puts him over the top for me is he sings with pure raw emotion and lays it all on the line. It is absolutely criminal that "Just Like Heaven" did not chart higher, it truly is pure pop perfection.
Oh, absolutely. And then, they DID start hitting the top ten UK charts with their worst attempts at contrived pop (or pap) a few years later with the substandard High and the execrable Friday I'm In Love.
I saw The Cure in concert at Fiddler's Green Amphitheater in Denver about 20-25 years ago. Still, to this day, it was the best concert I ever attended.
“I found myself alone, alone, alone above a raging sea that stole the only girl I loved and drowned her deep inside of me” absolute genius. my favorite line Robert has ever written
"just like heaven" always reminds me of that one girl... you know the one. we all have one in our past that we will never forget and never fully get over. i am now in my fading years, have kids and grandkids, but to this very day, this song still makes me think of her and still brings a cathartic tear to my eye.
I would too! What a dear soul. His music has reached SO many people, transcended through cultures, countries, ages, sexualities... I often wish that I could just tell him how much his music means to me, even if he's heard it a million times before. You just know that Robert Smith feels things so genuinely and honestly and deeply, the fact he translates that to such incredible music is telling.
Standing on a Beach "The Singles" is still my favorite collection of Cure songs. Primary, A Forest, Love Cats, Charlotte Sometimes... just an amazing album throughout. And that cover art... the feels!
Underrated means that it got undeserved criticism, zero airplay, or was a commercial failure. Fascination Street meets none of those criteria. It is a beloved song to many, even a generation later.
Lullaby is so wonderful in the creepiest way. The imagery in that song is so intense but the music behind the lyrics is positively mesmerizing. Pictures of You is incomparable. Matt and Trey from South Park said it best..."Disintegration is the best!" Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me being a very microscopic 2nd place to Disintegration.
"Just Like Heaven" was, and is, a fantastic song. But my all time favorite Cure song is, and will always be "Close to me." I'll never forget my best friend picking me up in his 1969 AMX on a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning in the summer of 1987, to go to our local "Trak Auto" auto parts store. This car was awesome. Everything about it was upgraded. It was super fast, and most importantly to me at the time, it had a kick ass Alpine cassette head unit in it, two Rockford "Punch 150" amps, and eight high end speakers. As we pulled out onto the road, he pushed a "mix tape" into the Alpine, smiled, and laid into the accelerator. Suddenly the sweet sound of that AMC's built 390, was cut off by the almost deafening sound of what seemed to be a door creaking as it was slowly being opened. The drums started in with what sounded like heavy breathing, along with a synthesized clapping, and organ. And when he began to sing, I found myself looking over with a sh*t eating grin on my face. Between the brutal pull of that car's engine, and this incredibly loud song I was hearing for the very first time, I felt like I was on cloud nine. That song never gets old. Especially when it's played at high volume, on a high end stereo system. The next song that came on was another I had never heard before. And it is equally as awesome. And that was "Planet Claire", by the B-52s. I can't hear either one, without thinking about the other, or that 69 AMX. Damn, I miss the 80s.
This is the first Cure song I ever heard, and I was hooked. 13 years old and my mom promised me she would buy ALL of their tapes if I brought up my grade in Biology. Dude, we didn’t know there would be 10 of them at the music store, but she followed through!! Still love, love, love The Cure ❤️
This track from The Cure truly informed my taste in music. I was 13 years old in 1988. Prior to hearing 'Just Like Heaven,' I would follow my school mates and their taste for artists like Bon Jovi, Pat Bennetar, Michael Jackson etc, but once I saw the video of Just Like Heaven on MTV, I was gripped by the audible and visual magic of this masterpiece. There was something different about The Cure from anything else I had been exposed to in music previously. This song is magical and as much as the song is genius, the video has a cinematic quality that engages the viewer and gives you a glimpse into the world of The Cure. Thirty plus years and hundreds of records later, I can point out this specific song as the one that impacted my interest in music and unique artists to the present day.
One of my favorites from the 80s. I love how the music has this feeling of a loss of control, a swirling thru space, matching the lyrics. The music also conveys a feeling of loss, an exquisite moment slipping away. Excellence.
I grew up a metal head and I've never heard a bad Cure song. Honestly I love everything they've ever released. Robert and the guys are literally part of the fabric of my love of music. True Titans of the conveyance of emotion through sound.
It's a great album, the way the album opens with the title track is incredible. That long instrumental then the aggression of the lyrics. Then lovely pops songs like How Beautiful You Are, opens with Want to know why I hate you? One of my all time favorites. Bunch of excellent songs on it.
“A lotta ear candy gives you cavities” is a great line, and true. Love The Cure, so many great songs that just don’t get old. I wouldn’t put Just Like Heaven at the very top but then again, it’s kind of hard to choose a top tune when so many are just perfection.
This was the first song from The Cure I ever heard, I’m only 16 at the time of writing this but I was 10 when my dad turned this song on on the radio in the car, my dad started singing along with it in the car and even at that age I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It’s absolutely beautiful and if I could ever only listen to one song, it would be this one. It reminds me of family and makes me smile everytime I hear it. Love this band 🖤
This song was played for the first dance with my beautiful wife on my wedding day. I used it to tell her I loved her for the first time. This song will always have a special place in my heart.
The first time I heard that song I always had it in my mind that if I ever had a daughter I would name her Elise, but after having my daughter I decided to name her Charley, after charlie brown lol my beloved cartoon character, and her middle name is based off of my favorite golden girl. Hahha
No matter which way you may admire this song and the actual perfection of its composition. It continues to prove to me that the 80’s was one of the best decades ever. From the movies to the music it all was poetic
Just like heaven went to #1 in my life. Love the opening drums, then that guitar kicks in and then sort of makes my heartache throughout the rest of it. In a good way.
Wish is an underated album. It created so many radio hits that might've given it a bad name, but you've got Open, Cut, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, A Letter to Elise, etc. all classic.
I agree 100% about “Just like Heaven”....I’ve been saying this for years and years ...it’s the perfect song...I’ve never tired of it and every time I hear it..it’s like a first kiss...dreamy!!! xo
This has ALWAYS been my favorite pop song. So magical and beautiful. The lyrics, the bridge, the hypnotic melody ~ just incredible. LOVE IT SO MUCH ❤️❤️❤️
You are 100% spot on Prof! The Cure has always been way ahead of its time, and for those of us that understood it and appreciated it, we were blessed with knowing that this is some of the best music of all time.
Agreed this song should have been a number one. I played this song for years as a drummer in an early 90s band and we continuously filled the dance floor with this. It was the perfect pop song. A moment in time.
I NEVER tire of this song, always brings fond memories of the 80s for me. It's one of the quintessential songs to mark that decade for me. Another awesome video essay my friend!
You were so on point about the Cure and this song and more. You articulated what what It is in my heart and mind but don't have the words to say!!!!! Your awesome professor. Keep it up.
The nostalgia is so strong with this song I can't even listen to it with actually getting sad. Why does time have to go by so fast. Disintegration is a fantastic album. All their albums are amazing for different reasons. Number 1 in my heart tho... is Bloodflowers.
Arguably one of the best songs written.. the intro itself is beyond catchy.. never tired of it.. the vocals and the musical arrangement is perfect.. listen to it everyday
Just like Heaven literally takes me to heaven. I think everyone has had a person close to them in the past that they can relate to this song. Just perfect.
MY faves were "In a Forest" "Just like heaven" and "Lovesong" I do love most The Cure's songs. "Fascination street" was so damn irresistable with that bassline. I hear that Robert Smith and his wife are STILL in LOVE and happily married.:)Oh, BTW, PIctures of you is another GREAT song by The Cure.
The 1st time i ever heard 'Just Like Heaven' i cried. It was included in a mix cd a Girl i'd met in London made for me & from that day on remained in my heart. Each & every time i hear it, i still tear up happily. . . a timeless track.
A Forest, Pictures Of You, Just Like Heaven...the perfect progression from goth to pop. In my college days, there was no quest more worthy or rewarding than meeting a girl who loved The Cure and trying to elicit a smile.
You stole my thunder. I have said for years Just Like Heaven is the perfect pop song. And this from a Cure fan who doesn't care much for most of the Cure's pop songs.
This is why I rate Kiss Me as their greatest piece of work. Yes above Disintegration, which I love as well, actually for me they haven't produced a bad song. I rate this album so high because it encapsulates every element of their repertoire in one album. You want pop, Kiss Me delivers, you want anger, angst, melancholy, everything, Kiss Me delivers by the bucket load. An amazing band that are massively misunderstood.
The Cure were one of the best and most quintessential 80s bands. They scored much higher in the British and Australian charts than they did in America.
I absolutely adored “ In Between Days”. That was my fave. I don’t think many Americans have good taste. My taste was born in the wrong country. This song should have been bigger!
You couldn't even really hear In Between Days broadcasted in the US in the mid-80s, unless you were watching 120 Minutes on MTV, or were close enough to a college radio station.
I agree with your statement about Americans. British music was (is) the best. Musically, lyrically. Joy Division, New Order (Blue Monday is still one of the best songs ever!) Siouxsie and the Banshees/The Creatures, Bauhaus-(and various Band member incarnations), Duran Duran, Ultra Vox, Cocteau Twins, The Smiths/Morrissey, Depeche Mode, The Cult, The Mission UK, Sisters of Mercy, Legendary Pink Dots, The English Beat, The Clash, The Specials, UB40, Soft Cell, Gary Numan, Tears For Fears, Sex Pistols, John Lydon, Malcolm McLaren, to name a few, in no order in-particular.
You’re absolutely right, this song is great! The song probably got to number one in the L.A. market because they played the hell of it in KROQ radio station back in the 80’s.
Truthfully, I have listened to this song over a thousand times and it still gives me chills. I always listen to it on repeat several times. The official video is lush and hauntingly beautiful as well. Thank you Robert!!
Just like heaven is great. Love song is perfect. Lullaby is too. Friday I’m in love is pretty good too. But my favorite is Hot hot hot. It’s so quirky and upbeat ...
Just like Heaven and also Friday I'm in Love. I was ready for the 80's and new wave. I am a 50's born boomer. Which means us in that age experienced 60's music, 70's music and on. By the end of the 70"s it was time for a new sound and I gradually climbed on board with new wave and gothic. Miss it to this day, even more than the vast majority of the 70's music I loved and most definitely better than todays music. Cure absolutely in my top 3 of 80's.
Just like heaven!!!! I can’t stop listening to this song!!! It’s An amazing poetic wonder to hear. His vocals are so sincere and makes you want to listen to more poetic stories. The music is so outstanding and takes you in a magical journey. I’m such a fan.
My ONLY complaint about this song is that it's too short!! It's over so quickly that I wind up restarting it, listening to it again and it's still not enough! Hands down, one of the best songs of the 80's 💜

Yup. I've watched recent concerts with The Cure and Robert Smith sounds as good today as he did 35 years ago.
I totally agree: “Just like heaven” is a perfect song.

Chester Bennington cried when he met Robert Smith and had to excuse himself. The Cure had a gift for making non-corny love songs.

It’s a masterpiece to say the least!
The intro of Just Like Heaven is to die for.
It really is a perfect song.
One of my favorite songs with a longish instrumental intro (Joy Division's Dead Souls is another).
Robert Smith’s lyrics are perfect, but that Porl/PealThompson’s scaling intro is absolutely what makes this…
You can get it as a ring tone for your phone. I’ve had it as my ring tone for many years.

I adore The Cure. Push hits me every time. It hurts me that it is so under rated.
Push is my ringtone.
Love it
Push is my favorite song.
@@rivblack Mine too
This is the first Cure song I ever heard, and I was hooked. 13 years old and my mom promised me she would buy ALL of their tapes if I brought up my grade in Biology. Dude, we didn’t know there would be 10 of them at the music store, but she followed through!! Still love, love, love The Cure ❤️
So cool of your mom to keep her promise
That whole album, Kiss me Kiss me Kiss me, is incredible
Yes! I remember buying the album when it came out and was blown away
Not a bad album, audio quality is poor due to a 24track analogue reel, earlier albums sound much better
Shitty album when compared to Three Imaginary Boys, 17 Seconds, Faith, Pornography or Disintegration!
@@filipematias5127 shitty? Wot
Awww I love this. I was 16 when I first heard the Cure... but that was decades ago
This band live in concert actually brought me to tears. Literally EVERY song is AMAZING
IMO, "Pictures of You" and "Just Like Heaven" are two examples of PERFECT Pop songs. Both songs are favorites of my ten and twelve year old daughters.
"From the edge of the deep green sea"deserves a video on its own. Deep song!
Motion seconded! I agree completely. That song completely floored me. I still remember exactly where I was the first time I heard it.
Definitely in my top 5 fav Cure songs!
It still makes me stop what I’m doing.
Heart wrenching song !!
Awesome song and great album wish .
Friday I’m in Love is guaranteed to lift your spirits even on a Monday.
true!
friday i’m in love came out when i was in the 3rd grade. i’ve been a fan since then ❤️
#PREACH #WORD #TRUTH #AMEN
nah, it makes me wanna hurl into a sick bucket actually.
Friday was a number one hit. At least in Canada.
“Just like Heaven”. Even my teenage kids LOVE this song.
Just Like Heaven has to be one of my favorite songs of all time! I jam out to it every time I hear it on the radio.
This song was played for the first dance with my beautiful wife on my wedding day. I used it to tell her I loved her for the first time. This song will always have a special place in my heart.
The Cures songwriting is is totally underrated. Lyrics were always on point.
A Letter to Elise was my inspiration for my Daughter's middle name
Inspired by Franz Kafka's book of collected "Letters To Felice."
I love love that song!!
Funny, My daughter’s middle name is Elise too. And I also named her after A Letter to Elise.
Cheers!
The first time I heard that song I always had it in my mind that if I ever had a daughter I would name her Elise, but after having my daughter I decided to name her Charley, after charlie brown lol my beloved cartoon character, and her middle name is based off of my favorite golden girl. Hahha
It's my youngest daughter's first name...because I couldn't really name her " from the Edge of the deep green sea"
This song makes me so happy I tear up EVERYTIME I hear it.
No matter which way you may admire this song and the actual perfection of its composition. It continues to prove to me that the 80’s was one of the best decades ever. From the movies to the music it all was poetic
When I'm feeling down or out of sorts, I can listen to Just Like Heaven and I feel comforted and grounded. One of my top 5 all time favorite songs.
Just like heaven went to #1 in my life. Love the opening drums, then that guitar kicks in and then sort of makes my heartache throughout the rest of it. In a good way.
To wish impossible things is a great song and so underrated.
My top 10 Cure for sure
Top 5 for sure
Wish is an underated album. It created so many radio hits that might've given it a bad name, but you've got Open, Cut, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, A Letter to Elise, etc. all classic.
Fantastic song!!
This song Is just flawless, unbelievable song.
I agree 100% about “Just like Heaven”....I’ve been saying this for years and years ...it’s the perfect song...I’ve never tired of it and every time I hear it..it’s like a first kiss...dreamy!!! xo
The lyrics are just amazing, I mean you could literally drown yourself in them and the hidden melodies. My most favourite ever songs
This has ALWAYS been my favorite pop song. So magical and beautiful. The lyrics, the bridge, the hypnotic melody ~ just incredible. LOVE IT SO MUCH ❤️❤️❤️
I just remembered that my mom liked this song so much she bought the album for me on my 16th birthday
Totally agree, one will never tire listening to this PERFECT pop song!
‘The Cure in Orange’ Best live album of all time, that lineup was magnificent!
Great reveal...Bob removing the mop wig and having the crew cut...like his late 70s hairdo....
I NEVER tire of this song, always brings fond memories of the 80s for me. It's one of the quintessential songs to mark that decade for me. Another awesome video essay my friend!
You nail it every time prof. Nuance or not you know your sh**. This is a classic example. Brilliance.
You were so on point about the Cure and this song and more. You articulated what what It is in my heart and mind but don't have the words to say!!!!! Your awesome professor. Keep it up.
Robert Smith is such a gifted individual! Thank you!
I love the Cure and I'm following your videos closely to absorb all the eloquent words you use to review such iconic songs by beloved bands 😍😊
Growing up my mom would always play the cure, I’m 29 now & just got married. My wedding song was “just like heaven”. I absolutely love the cure 🖤
Agree, "Just Like Heaven" is one song I want to hear at least once a day, years later!
The nostalgia is so strong with this song I can't even listen to it with actually getting sad. Why does time have to go by so fast. Disintegration is a fantastic album. All their albums are amazing for different reasons. Number 1 in my heart tho... is Bloodflowers.
So true love bloodflowers.every song perfect love the song13.
Arguably one of the best songs written.. the intro itself is beyond catchy.. never tired of it.. the vocals and the musical arrangement is perfect.. listen to it everyday
Great song then Great song now -- this song lives and breathes the 80's and brings that good energy into the now.
One of my favorite songs ever. You’re absolutely right.
Also The Walk...love The Cure
@@MissouriPA Omg, I gave a listen to "The Walk" and I don't think I have ever heard it before just now. IF I had, I don;t recall it. Thanks:)
@@juliegogola4647 my pleasure! It’s not one of their better known songs, but it should be in my humble opinion. 🤓
The greatest, most beautifully written long song ever.
The Cure is phenomenal band. Love their music..... Lullaby is on my list of greatest songs of all time.
Except just like heaven came before pictures of you
“Just Like Heaven” is beautiful, the lyrics and the tune.
Dinosaur jr version is faster, more distorted and heavier but just as good
"It's virtually impossible for the human ear to reject it"...what a great quote!! ...and, totally accurate
I couldn't agree more. This song takes me to a different place every time. A place I want to be.
You stole my thunder. I have said for years Just Like Heaven is the perfect pop song. And this from a Cure fan who doesn't care much for most of the Cure's pop songs.
Thunder can be shared .
Flawless!
Yes pop from The Cure, my least favourite period...more of a late 70's and early 80's Curehead...
great band, went to see them live last year in ireland, still sound amazing today as they have always done
I don't doubt it, glad you got to go!
Agree!
In the 90's, nothing got you laid faster than liking the Cure.
The Cure = my all time favorite group. Robert smith is an amazing song writer and his voice is mesmerizing
On ne devient pas “fan” de Cure, on est rappelé par leurs meilleurs morceaux à chaque étape de notre vie.
Don’t be rude
@@Patrick3183 He wasn't even being rude.
@@mestizoboy College radios were the best.
Absolutely, gorgeous tune by any standards.
The Cure ...Just Like heaven and Love song...my favorites
You’re absolutely right, this song is great! The song probably got to number one in the L.A. market because they played the hell of it in KROQ radio station back in the 80’s.
You won’t find many songs with a better intro.
Smoke on the water same league
The Killing Moon has a great intro.
swamp thing by the chameleons is another song with a great intro.
Go check out Rick Beato’s musical breakdown of the musical masterpiece
My favorite band of all time. Miss the 80's.
Truthfully, I have listened to this song over a thousand times and it still gives me chills. I always listen to it on repeat several times. The official video is lush and hauntingly beautiful as well. Thank you Robert!!
Professor, thank you for this episode! I love The(m) Cure ever since i've heard of and always will.
You're very welcome!
Just like heaven is great. Love song is perfect. Lullaby is too. Friday I’m in love is pretty good too. But my favorite is Hot hot hot. It’s so quirky and upbeat ...
For quirky and upbeat, "High" is an excellent one that gets overlooked.
I’m usually not a fan of remixes but the Hot Hot Hot one they did on the remixed LP is 🔥
Not perky or upbeat, but I've always been partial to Strange Day off of Pornography.
‘Plainsong’ is absolutely FULL of Euphoria. Such a sexy poem of melody.
Wow, truly amazed that ‘Just Like Heaven’ didn’t make it to #1. The song is SO good. ‘Lovesong’ is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time though.
When that came out only only die hard music fans and indie freaks, i mean that with love, had even heard of the Cure.
"Same deep water as you" is my favourite. .
Finally someone say out loud what I was thinking for years. Such a great song.
My ONLY complaint about this song is that it's too short!! It's over so quickly that I wind up restarting it, listening to it again and it's still not enough!
Hands down, one of the best songs of the 80's 💜
