The advice about reframing a character's flaw as an insecurity is pure gold (in fact, might've helped me tremendously with the character I'm currently prerpping for a new campaign). Really love the way you think about roleplaying!

@@corkboardsandcuriosities Don't worry about not being a native speaker. Like, don't lose the accent, it's great. It's like getting RPG tips from a vampire countess or something.
Really like this "fatal insecurity" framing, btw. A lot of my past RPGing was Shadowrun, and given the cyberpunk genre I tended to frame character concepts while building them as "how is this person alienated from society/themselves/etc", but insecurity is broader and less genre tied, and I really like that.

I did something not covered in this video, but that is worth considering. I played a character completely ignorant of the world and its lore, but played him curious and also not afraid to show his ignorance to the world to see the reaction it drew. He made faux-pas, he asked questions about things that should have been obvious and just had him engage in the world until he had an idea of what causes he wanted to attach himself too. It was a goo excuse to show a character growing, and growing attached to his comrades as he learned what they were about.

I like to engage the other players in a more mechanical way. I find out who is best at what skills and keep notes. Then when we encounter strange runes, instead of saying " who has the highest Arcana skill"? I will say "Hey Presto, you're pretty knowledgeable about this kind of stuff, any idea what this says"? I also like to pull a sermon or consultation out of Clerics/Priests. Hey Stone Shield, what does Torm the God of Duty say about having conflicting responsibilities? I know my family needs me for the next harvest, but if someone doesn't stop this Army of Darkness, then a lot of people are going to die. Watching CR I realized that a lot of their best RP moments didn't come from the DM but from players asking other characters questions about themselves, their history, what they think of the political situation etc, and then giving them the floor. Be generousness and proactive with the spotlight if you want better roleplay at your table. If the player is caught off guard say, if you're not comfortable talking about it right now maybe we can talk more privately when we pull late night watch duty together next? This gives the player some time to reflect and puts the ball back in their court. Regardless the point has been made. Your character acknowledges their character. This will make the player more interested in their character and enjoy them more.

There is quality and style of roleplay that I often strive for, but I have to say it is hard to maintain. Your ideas in this and other videos really hits the vibe I am often shooting for. How do you keep up that level of intensity from session to session over a campaign? I get frustrated sometimes as I’ll hit the sweet spot occasionally and then suddenly it will feel like I lose it and can’t get it back.

100% agree that it is very much collaborative. It shouldn't all be on the GM. I make sure I have buy in from the players now. I had one real bad attempt where I pitched a game and didn't make sure everyone was onboard with the concept. Then tried playing and one of the players was completely there for something else. Anyways, it has to be collaborative, I totally agree. I look at it like improv, but it can be dramatic or wtv is desired by the group. Somewhat tangentially, I have come around to accepting passive players too. There was a point where I thought if a player wasn't more active they weren't having fun but I have come around to just accepting that sometimes people just want to show up, hangout and be support characters or enjoy where the story takes them. Good vid!

Don't pull too hard. There are many ways to play, all equally valid, and it's easy for intended encouragement to have a chilling effect if your underlying desire is to change people.
It sounds like there's a mix of play styles at your table. If you want more of one style, there's only so far you can tip the scales before you diminish the enjoyment of the other players.
Instead of trying to change your current table, find one that better suits your tastes. I'm not saying you have to quit! But plan to join or assemble a more roleplay-focused group for your next campaign, or play in two at once.
Matt Colville has a great video about types of players if you're interested in the GM perspective.
