    Hi great brewing vid --I was taught how to find the end of the dead head is drop 10 drops into a shot glass and hold it to your eye look right in if it still bothers the eye it`s not consumable when it does`nt bother your good to go - old school trick.

    amazing video. A very simple process. I will use a keg but I don't beleive you need a fancy reflux to make good fuel. Thank you.

    Great vid i have done my first run about a week before watching your vid. I start catching as soon as the first starts dripping and catch the first 100ml and use that for cleaning, the rest i catch in 700ml spirit bottles and do alcohol test with a alco meter, i noticed any thing that would not burn is when the heads are comming in just below 40persent alc, have noticed as the heads start dropping in to loooks like a sweet sugar liquid dropping in,not good at all .

    Could you recirculate the cooling water through a small radiator, or a large one if need be ...with a fan to chill it down ? I just hate to see water run down the drain like that. Maybe save it and use it for your next mash. Awesome video bro !

    if hes only making fuel the start with acetone and other contaminants wouldn't matter that much if some was to be in it..and the tails also if it isn't all water.

    I do the same on the "foreshots" / heads. No point in taking chances. You got some very nice videos and equipment here sir, hope I can make your acquaintance some day!

    Is that thermometer measuring the actual liquid temperature or the head space temp?

    • @arensnapoleon2667
      @arensnapoleon2667 8 лет назад

      +Duncan Britton He clearly stated that it is the temp of the steam.

    You say you're getting distillate at 140 degrees? How may I ask? Pure ethanol boils at 173 degrees. How is it you're getting drips at 140 degrees? Not a dumb question because on my 5 gallon pot still I start producing at 190. Very curious. Nice rig though. Very envious!

    • @arensnapoleon2667
      @arensnapoleon2667 8 лет назад +1

      +wingmanalive I believe he was talking about the Heads @ 140 degrees. clean Ethanol starts @ the temp you are describing. It is all called alcohol. What ever you do, don't drink it. especially below 170'ish.

    • @wingmanalive
      @wingmanalive 8 лет назад

      Well I've been distilling my own ethanol for awhile now. 99% of the time my first run starts producing at 195 degrees or so and at 80-100 proof. My second run at 180 degrees and a solid 150 proof. A 3rd run will give me 170+ proof. I'm a firm believer that there is no standard starting temp for production because it depends on several things. Basically whatever temp you begin producing at is the right temp for you.

      Just a follow up on my comment. Now that I've upgraded to a stainless steel rig with a Liebig condenser I have also experienced similar results. I'll actually see some drips at 130 degrees which of course is the heads. Now I don't distill a grain or a fruit wash but only sugar so any methanol or acetone I get is at a minimum at best. My rig will pick up the drip rate at 170 degrees and at 174degrees I start collecting the hearts. My previous comments were based on a homemade still with a thermometer in the lid. My current setup runs very nice and once the heat source finds its' sweet spot I basically monitor it but sit back and let it do its' thing until it naturally rises to about 205 degrees. That's where I shut it down. I triple distill my washes while I still toss the heads each time so by the 3rd pass my stuff is ultra clean and at 175+ proof.
