Obi-Wan Almost failed out of the Jedi

    A New Hope introduced the force and characters like Obi-Wan, Luke, Vader, and Leia who would go on to use it, but the expanded universes of Legends and Canon made basically every other character force sensitive, too.

    I think it's absolutely fascinating how the ability to fail Jedi training like this completely recontextualizes Ahsoka's introduction compared to how it's presented in the TCW movie.

    I remember reading this. **We were so innocent back then….***
    But yeah, it’s great to think Obi-wan was a C-student who burned the midnight oil to get chosen by Qui-Gon. Too bad they all died anyway.

    I think it's horrible that the corps were considered "lesser". In what universe is being a *doctor* something for a washout? And hey, librarians and teachers require masters degrees for a reason. The Exploration Corps are perhaps the most idiotic example. I don't know if you've heard, but there's an entire long-running sci-fi franchise all about highly trained and respected Explorers.

    If I was kicked out of the order for failing my training, I would just get stronger on my own and become as powerful as I can. Imagine the flex when Yoda asks for your help after kicking you out.

    • @michaelandreipalon359
      @michaelandreipalon359 4 месяца назад +1

      Granted, such power does make you be useful for a Multiversal defense force who sorely needs more Force sensitives instead, which is arguably a much higher calling. Would be really nice, being an undercover Kyle Katarn-esque agent becoming a new yet cool ensemble darkhorse resident and friend of places and peoples like Gravity Falls, Gravesfield, Misora, some Metropolis iteration, and so on.

    • @tTaseric
      @tTaseric 4 месяца назад +2

      The problem is that for a large portion of Jedi history, there really just isn't a way to get stronger on your own.
      Firstly, if the Jedi even let you go, they'd keep tabs on you, and wouldn't let you "become as powerful as you could".
      Secondly, the Jedi generally always have the most complete and comprehensive research about the force. It simply isn't taught anywhere else. The only alternatives are usually extremely niche communities you wouldn't even be able to find unless the Jedi Order wanted you to, or whatever Sith institution is around at that point in history, which is almost always a death sentence unless you're particularly powerful and/or are a nepo baby.
      Characters like Luke and Ahsoka and Kanan who do make their ways on their own almost always have an extremely solid jumping off points. All 3 of those examples were trained by council members.

    The Jedi Apprentice series holds a very special place in my heart, because back in the day, I failed high school due to laziness and felt like a reject afterwards. In my country, there are public trade schools that also let you get university qualification, but if you do that, you have to choose a trade you learn the theoretical and practical basics about, next to the standard high school stuff. I chose agriculture, and during my time at this school, I read the Jedi Apprentice series. You have no idea how much I identified with Obi-Wan. I like to joke that I did my time in the AgriCorps, too, lol.

  • @jacoblyman9441

    Those young reader books were huge when I was a child. I remember reading about the Agricorps in the copies I picked up from an elementary school library. I do remember the shorter Boba Fett series a bit more clearly though, especially since it had an odd blurb in it about how child Boba was a bookworm. That felt like Scholastic (and maybe the influence of First Lady Laura Bush's reading programs at the time) crawling into Boba's story saying "you know what would get kids to read? If the most BADASS BOUNTY HUNTER LOVED BOOKS!!!!"
    So forget your favorite Glup Shitto from Legends, I am waiting for Disney to re-canonize bookworm Boba. 🤣

    • @jacoblyman9441
      @jacoblyman9441 4 месяца назад +1

      @@michaelandreipalon359 yes, I mean "shorter" in that it had only four or five books, where-as the Jedi young reader subseries had what, ten or more books per series and there was an entire subseries per prequel film? (One series for Padawan Obi-Wan, one for Padawan Anakin, and one for a padawan who survived Order 66). They had a "fill the book fair like it's Goosebumps" release strategy that made those series pretty big for what they were.

    I remember Heezo from "Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade". He had mentioned that he got offered his job, but it wasn't much of a choice because the alternative was returning to a home he didn't know. I suppose that was always an option, but like he said, why go back to a planet you didn't know, especially since they probably didn't return you to your family.

    A good informative video. I wish there was more hard data on Jedi training & trials. The development of children into teenagers would mean that what they get taught about the Force probably starts very simple & becomes more comples. Seeing that done would be interesting.
    Edit: I don't trust any Disney attempt to handle this subject at all. They cannot comprehend it, nor are they honest enough to do it justice.

    A very impressive Jedi Ojamajo, in my opinion. Brings into mind Gen. Patton, who was weak at reading until his awesome mother taught him well in his later years.
    Honestly, this tale should be one good reason why the better parts of the Legends continuity should stay well preserved and deserves to be exposed to the public more. Really, I doubt Disney Canon will reach highs like this, even with Timothy Zahn and Claudia Gray on their ranks.
    Addendum: Say, Corey, any chance you'll talk about the washouts that stayed militarily valuable, like the Temple Security Forces in Battlefront II 2005?
