These are sold as part of dim sum lunches in restaurants, at convenience stores , delicatessens and even grocery stores. Moved from Hawaii to Switzerland and your recipes are awesome and help make it so I don’t miss the foods I grew up with at home. Thank you
You're so welcome.
yup! Number one cook! and those flour-mixing hands that were making cakes from scratch over 45 years ago!
Thanks,Kip. Now you and Crys can make it yourselves.
I could live happily live on char siu bao and dan tat .
I experimented with many online manapua recipes and discovered that the Pickle Lady’s recipe was by far, the best because it came closest to the best manapua anyone can buy in Hawaii. The texture of the bun was superb.
I followed the instructions but added extra flour during the dough cycle on my bread maker.
The added flour was necessary because the dough wasn’t manually kneaded with extra flour as illustrated in the video
This recipe is a keeper. Thank you for sharing your recipe.
You're so very welcome.
A subscriber from Switzerland who moved from Hawaii just made it and put it on facebook.
This Lady is a Gem 💎!!!
Your videos are such an inspiration. Thank you!
What a great cook and teacher you are!! Thank you for such a thorough lesson.
Every time I watch your videos, I received such a relaxed feeling. You are calm and its so easy to follow your recipes because of the way you explain. Thank you Leonora. Be well! Blessings!
Big thanks for this fabulous recipe for pork buns, Hawaiian style! Takes me back to the island. It's so delicious!!! I thought I was just lucky when it turned out so good my first time. By the third time, the recipe was so true!!! Now, for my large family, I make buns twice a week. If I don't, the grandkids will think I'm Ill. Now, I ask them to help me, amd some will. It's a ohana moment!!!
Fantastic! I usually have char siu either ready to roast or cooked and ready to eat. I've been meaning to make char siu bao but haven't done so for awhile. My family loves them too and never lasts long.
OMG Those look so yummy . Gonna try this one for sure.
So yummy! Another recipe of yours to try!
Thank you for sharing can’t wait to make it
I had just found you on the internet by chance I'm always happy to learn from a local from Hawaii on all the goodies that we were raised with thank you very much God bless you I also subscribed to you❤
Great recipe I’m going to give it a try. Thanks👍
Auntie, thank you so much for passing on your cooking wisdom to the public. I love the generosity.
I noticed the struggle of the board sliding around. A small tip, put a damp paper towel underneath it. It will hold in place tightly.
Lol nevermind. I just reached the part you put the paper towel… you already know. Of course you do.
These cooking tutorials are very helpful! Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome!
Thank you for sharing your recipes i love it
Looks so delicious , can’t wait to try those.

I always wanted to attempt making baked Char Siu Bao and felt it's too time consuming. After watching your Pork Char Siu tutorial and this video your instructions are plain, simple and easy to follow. It's like I'm sitting on a high stool in your kitchen. I'm looking forward to do both recipes soon. As well as viewing and trying more of you other delicious recipes.

Wish this was my grandma :)
Thank you for the awesome simple recipe. Have always wanted to make this and char siu but never had the inclination to do it because all the complex ingredients I thought it would require. She makes it look to easy that I had to try it. Turned out just like the restaurant. Thank you for sharing all your wonderful recipes.
So happy for you. Several people have said the same thing.
Can’t wait to make these with your char siu pork. Thank you! Mahalo

I really enjoyed this video. Mahalo nui! 😊Char Siu Bao has long been a favourite of mine, and watching your "Lovely Hula Hands" make it was such a treat! Manapua! Small kid time. I hungry already.

So very good video my favorite snack, my lunch when I was going to school during my good old days . I have to really try this ! Thank you Leonora you are the best teacher ! 👏👍🙏❤️💕😇
Thanks for the compliment. Everyone loves this tender bun. Better than lots of shops.
I love watching you❤❤❤❤❤ you da best
Onolicious!
Takes a little practice but comes out so good. It freezes well also.
I like your recipi !
Just made some. Family and friends love it.
This looks delicious... If you put one of those waffle placemats (dollar tree) under your board it won't move on you. works for bowls as well. I like sho you chicken from the Ala Moana Center . San Francisco and Oakland China town have the sticky sweet rice diamond shape. rice cakes. I get those and pork buns baked and steamed every time I go home to the bay area. Thanks Pickle Lady for showing how to make such a treat.
Seems like you know all the goodie places to eat.
I remember the same "Old China Man" from my school days, used to be about 25 cents in the 1960s, oh so ONO!!! Aloha
Yes, he had a stick across his back with 2 hanging cans filled with goodies as he chimed, "manapua, pepeau". We all remember the good ole days. Too bad our kids have no idea what fun times we had with all the simple toys and games we had because there was no internet and cell phones. Try making my simple char siu, guaranteed to taste better that the store. It has more than a quarter of a million views. Then you can make the bao.
@@HawaiisPickleLady Thank you for your recipes!!! Aloha
🌺Manapua! Yum Yum!!🌺
btw: I made your recipe for Char Siu and it is Magic..just the way I like it!
Thank you!💓
You're welcome. Everyone loves it.
Mahalo Nui Loa for sharing…
Thank you for featuring this dish, Leonora. Biting into a freshly steamed char siu pork-filled manapua brings back memories of simpler times in the Pacific Islands.
Please try this recipe and let me know. Thanks for subscribing.
Clicked on the video. Seen a grandma. I know already I found the right channel. SUBSCRIBED!
Thank you so much.
I can’t believe I found you!!! I had your first pickle book and it got lost during moves!!! I was devastated as I can’t seem to find a copy!!!
Sorry about that, my books are out of print. All Oahu libraries have copies and Aliante Library in Vegas has it.
Request #1: How do you make the rice cake (the layered one with the brown layer on bottom?) I been looking for it’s recipe but haven’t found it yet.
Request #2 … the original old time tea cookie or cake. My hometown Kalihi with a Chinese store at the corner of Gulick and School street called “Chun Lee Tong” always had those tea cookie, so soft and so delicious. Do you also have a recipe? Been craving for these two old time favorites.
Also, if I wanted to steam the Bao, what would be the timing for steaming? Mahalo for all you do sharing precious recipes of growing up days.... been following you for a week now and have discovered awesome memory days recipes. Mahalo plenty! Will be using your recipes to the hilt here in Las Vegas, NV. Aloha!
Thanks for your comments. No one makes the 9 layer cake anymore, it's too time intensive. I probably have a recipe for the tea cookie someone gave me a long time ago. I will have to try it out and put it on my to do list. New Lin Fong on upper Maunakea above Hotel Street and on the mauka side makes the best rice cake, white with holes from yeast. They sell tea cakes but not like the crispy edges that I grew up with. Also have large almond cookies (I have a recipe for flaky almond cookies on the website). Lin Fong has downsized quite a bit and used to be the only store that made all the cakes and specialty items. Their location used to be the large store on Maunakea across the lei shop. The steamed bau can be cooked for about 15 minutes but it's a different dough, no eggs, so it's white. Need to work on that one too.
Oh thank you so much! I miss eating these so much. I can't get good tasting ones where I live now. I'll attempt to make these myself!
Several people have replied they made it for the first time and it came out very good and showed me pictures. That makes me happy.
Your Bao is the best! My Texas neighbors all agree, yahoo, pardner!
Thanks so much. Everyone here loves it. Can never make enough. I made big ones and sold them at a craft fair in Hawaii and they went like hot cakes.
I enjoy watching your videos so much, you remind me of a dear friend ,Carol, in Hawaii who has passed on now, my husband and I and I lived in Honolulu for seventeen years. I miss so many things . Thank you and aloha
You're so welcome. Now you can make what you remember. I moved away 6 years ago but can make most of the things in Vegas.
1st timer here and I love you aunty!!! The way you speak your words brings back memories of my mommy!! I am going to try this recipe and provide you feedback! I am sure it will be Onolicious!! Thank you for sharing!!
Everyone loves this and it's fairly easy to make.
To prevent the board from sliding on the counter, put a rubber liner on the counter. They're sold everywhere, Walmart, Target, etc.
Mahalo aunty!!! I can't wait to make some^^
You'll really enjoy this easy recipe that always comes out good.
I have had shou bao in the Philippines and Thailand abd love them, but in the USA where I live is impossible to get good ones I do make my own Char Siew. This looks great
This bun is so light and my char siu is the most popular video with over quarter of a million views.
Just wanted to say mahalo!! My family and friends enjoyed this recipe, so glad I found you, love from Canada 💕
Thank you!
Make it and let me know how it turns out.
thank you so much took me two tries to perfect it was really good mahalo from reno nv
Glad you did it and it came out. Can't make enough for the family and we have to portion it out.
Iya tq..
I try to suruh ani to cook that kio...
I am an instant fan.you are my kumu. And I'm a mom of 9 and tutu of 26!!!
Congratulations. You have a lot of mouths to feed and you will save money making char siu and the buns. Everyone will love it. Mahalo.
Looks delicious! Maybe I'll try making rather than buying. Does it freeze well? Thanks so much for this lesson.
It freezes very well. It always comes out good 🙂 and everyone loves it.
Hi Ma’am - thank and praise God for you and your talents, glad I found you🙏 I love your recipes and I am going to make this bao soon I just need to get my ingredients together. You are the best! The only thing is I need to use the kitchen aid machine because I'm not good with kneading plus my hands are small I'm petite person but you are so good. Raquel in LA, California
Thanks for the compliment.
😋❤️
We use to call the guy that sold this, the Manapua man, Asook . He would say Manapua, Pepe au, I have ea ,meaning ear today. And the diamond shape rice cake and layered sweat gau. was the kids favourite .
You know what this means? If you remember the Manapua man visiting your neighborhood it means you’re old😂 I remember those days. Ahfook’s side hustle. Aloha from Honolulu 🌺 p.s. I don’t think it’s true regarding the corn beef bc corned beef cost more than pork butt.
I definitely prefer to steam them.
It's a different dough, no eggs so it's white.
My favourite!! Thank you for the recipe! Can't wait to try it!
My pleasure 😊
thanks your video my mouth is watering . our fav manapua shop libbys closed up n char hung sut not open im going to try make some. can these
manapua be steamed? and can you freeze them? freeze before or after baking/steaming? we always make a lot of gaugee/wontons/pork hash n freeze them n cook when we want to eat
These freeze very well. The dough is different from steamed which doesn't have eggs so the dough is white. I will do a steamed version later. I did not care for Libby's and Char Hung Sut because it was too much dough. I like something lighter.
These look so good! I have a question about the filling. Did you cook it before adding it to the pan with the onions or was it raw? Thanks for sharing!
Char siu is cooked, but everything is stir fried and cooled some before stuffing.
You are a good teacher , thanks for sharing old school cooking techniques
You're very welcome.
These look so good! I am going to try these. Can I use my Kitchen Aid mixer for the dough, or do you recommend doing by hand? Thanks in advance!
Use your kitchen aid to save time. I like doing things by hand and it is pretty fast.
@@HawaiisPickleLady Thank you!
Hello HPL, love your channel and recipes. You are the best.
Just wanted to tell you if you put a damp paper towel under your cutting board it won't slide around....
Mahalo ♥
I make manapua but i gotta try your bread recipe for the manapua. I’m from Molokai and the only one that sells manapua here and always sell out!
You'll love this recipe, It comes out just like the store and is so soft. Everyone loves the bun.
Using my other half tablet! Thank you for sharing your recipes! Can't wait to make this. JoAnn Sigby p.s. can they freeze and how to reheat? Thank you again
Char siu bau freezes very well. Just thaw and zap in micro few seconds.
Good
tea too,
can see the steam rising up !
Tell Puna to try this. Every one will love this.
I love eating these buns the place I used to buy them from was a dim sim coffee shop but they closed the business down everything they made was so good and yours look just like theirs. I am going to make them. Question can they be frozen before baking and can they also be frozen after baking.
Yes to both.
@@HawaiisPickleLady Thank you for getting back to me so soon. Enjoy your videos!
As long as I lived in Hawaii, I never had a baked manapua😮
Every time when lunch wagon come @lunch time in high school, I always got at least 1 manapua for snack.
Lunch was usually Teriyaki chicken sandwich of katsu plate lunch😊
I'll try this, my haole wife never had baked ones either so, it be a new treat for us both.
Mahalo🤙🤙🤙
You'll love it, comes out very good and the bread is excellent.
