Great video
Don’t believe there is a video out there on the subject that explains as well as you…. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge!! Love how you share the ‘why’ along with the ‘how’…
No problem Randy glad it helps
Cracking Job pal 👍
Thanks Brother
Another very good video covering this often daunting but basically simple job extremely well, congratulations. The last time that I rebuilt a mini gearbox was over 55 years ago now but after watching this the memories came flooding back, happy days.
Thanks Tony, I am delighted it brought back memories, Im gland you approve my explanation
Careful what you wish for, Paul. AvE is the only channel I know that can simply say hello and..._DEMONITIZED._ LOL
That said, he's also one of the most entertaining straight talkers on RUclips. :-D
He has a great channel and as you say he is a straight talker and a decent blocke making good content
"and... action!.... there ya are now!"
was great to see you replacing the O ring on the spindle for selector forks,i took that out and replaced it on my build a couple months back and the comments i got from people that should know better were very negative,as i was wasting my time,,ive heard these can leak which is why i did a complete rebuild, not arthur job like some of my critics..i dont cut corners..great work mate.
A good gearbox rebuild should involve replacing all perishable components those being negative are simply trying to reassure them selves they did it right by not replacing it 😊
@@HREIRL very well said mate..
Amazing follow up. I'm literally following step by step. Thanks for advise on what to check its the difference between restoration costing 10k and everything replaced willy nilly and maybe never finished and maybe it costing 5k and getting to enjoy it. Great advice and videos. Keep it up.
Glad it was helpful Trevor and thanks for the lovely comment 👍
Guess Works
👍
Cracking video Paul 👍 look forward to second part.. you make it so understandable that you could give it a go yourself... suggestion for thought, be good if you had a little camera mounted above your bench to see straight down to see into the box or other bench work etc, would make Billy’s life a it easier too.. keep up the top work!
Will do Andrew and thanks for the good words, much appreciated
Fantastic video, thank you. Don't do what I did and try the gears out before final assembly. I had synchro balls and springs flying across the garage! Mrs is good at finding them and helping me put them back together. All the best, Paul
Haha I have done that before what a nightmare lots of hands and knees action
Paul
Greater de Video again on a dificult subject!
There is a small tool for the detents!
👍👍
Thanks Francisco
0:57 thank you for the acknowledgement of my questions Paul
no problem Paul.
Paul, you forgot the 5th gear
😂😂😂😂
did you not see it going in ?
@@HREIRL 😂😂🤔
1st again Paul, Merch is good btw!
Good man Paul.
@@HREIRL Btw Paul. Sat here wearing my black HRE T shirt!!
Phenomenal, highly educational and all from memory. I’m dying to see what you do for an encore. I’m surprised you get many questions, you have already answered them all! Truly professional and entertaining as always with in-depth analyses and top tips. Makes assembling a mini gearbox look easy, but viewers be warned, it isn’t! Even the good camera work is getting better. Love this channel.
Thanks Thomas, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Just a thought on the faffy pin on the shaft. When the ring is of the shaft out the way, paint, or score a line up the shaft in line with the hole/pin so when its all going back together, you have a good idea of where the pin is sitting. Does that make sense? I'm not really a gearbox person, but I was looking to rebuild an F13 dog box and was looking for vids, but not a lot out there. Like your work though, a good insight as what to look for, thanks.
Keep this up and I might even try striping my box on my latest engine , a little more time watching your excellent tutorials and away we go!? Keep it coming !
you should its not exactly simple but it is most defiantly straight forward
Thank you for answering the question about the bearings under the gears. Much appreciated. I've' rebuilt a couple of 4 synchro boxes. Got a 3 synchro to do next.
No problem Paul hope it was of help
Top notch, it's after midnight and I am thinking of watching the next one .
How can I support your channel?
Hi Andy thank you for your lovely comments. I see you have already supported us through our merch store thank you 😊
Greetings from Canada
Another great episode..
Had to watch it twice to follow along...
Probably need to watch it again.. Hahaha
I have heard you say “dog box”...straight cut... remote... rod change...
Are any or all “ interchangeable”..?
Please advise..
Missing Gretel.. and more Fabri-Cobbling
Curtis
Hi Curtis, Gretel will be back on line shortly we are just waiting on panels to become available. Remote and Rod change are not interchangeable unfortunately. Generally dog box and syncro are.
@@HREIRL Hello Paul..
Thanks for the reply.. reason I ask about the transmission/gear box is that in my Mini currently I have a 998 w rod change.. I have recently purchased a Cooper 998 w a remote.. and I am missing the drive shafts/“knuckle” assy’.
I think now I am probably heading for a full front sub-frame build up...
Any recommendations..?
Thanks in advance
Curtis
Are the early magnesium alloy gearbox casing still the strongest?
Haven't encountered any of them DJB but I would imagine at this stage they are some 50 years old and magnesium suffers from embrittlement meaning while it will be lighter it would be more likely to fracture
Excellent demonstration. Those detents can be frustrating.
I did cringe when I saw you using the vice without soft jaws.
Have a look again JJ, the vice has been modified :)
What make of bearings do you use for the gearbox rebuild?
Generally I us RHP, Timkin and Torrington but in some cases you have to use what you can get
@@HREIRL thanks for your reply, Timken own Torrington I believe. I really enjoy your videos and you explain in good detail. Nice to see a genuine chap also has disassembly issues and that your vids are uncut to show this :)
Hello, I’m about to finish my 1380 with a remote sc gearbox.
My intention is to use sc drop gears. Mini racing people tell me that the swiftune drop gears are better and a lot more quiet. Do you know why they are more quiet than for example MED:s and Minispares drop gesrs?
Hi Paul,
Another great video.
Coincidently I think I might have cracked my Moke's gearbox casing at a motorkhana (autotest) yesterday. I've at least stripped a tooth from the pinion or crownwheel.
Haven't stripped it yet, but I'm thinking I should order parts so they get to Australia in time for the rebuild.
Do you use gearbox rebuild kits, or do you source parts individually?
Have you had any experience (good or bad) with the MED or KAD Pinion Support Bearing Housing?
Cheers,
Dave
Comment. 👍
Hi Paul, So I am one of those guys who purchased the C-22A1741 Baulk Rings from mini spares for my DAM5626 gearbox with what looks like standard gears. I have not assembled the gearbox yet and am wondering if you think I would be better off with the 22G2033EVO Baulk Rings instead?
100% Gomer the rings you have are way to hard for the standard gear sets. The rings John Guess sells are great as is the 22G2033EVO rings
@@HREIRL Thanks Paul I appreciate your advice and expertise!
