Several years ago l met an X-15 pilot and his wife at a Smithsonian Institute lecture.
While he had an interesting film and stories to present, I had the pleasure of informing his wife that the X-20 Dyna-Soar made an appearance in _'Marooned'_ a movie based upon Martin Caiden's book.
She had never seen the film and I brought it up to her because,... wait for it,...she was one of the engineers who designed the X-20.
You are correct on both parts. She was *one* of the engineers. It was devolped by a team. Hardly anything today is designed and engineered by one person. She likely wasn't the head engineer. I don't get impressed when someone says they were part of/or one of the engineers/designers of a said object. Unless you are the team lead or single engineer/designer I'll be impressed.

Yeah, but they spent many years in the mothball fleet.
Iowa was never meant to go against Yamato, they didn't even know it existed, They were built part of a high speed plan to address US slower battleships against Japanese cruisers

@@spikedpsycho2383 The Iowa’s were a response to the Yamato’s, but the US thought the Yamato’s were gonna be Iowa sized with 16” guns, not 70,000 tons with 18.1” guns. Even the Montana’s weren’t specifically designed to fight that.
The US has recently commissioned an air launched hypersonic glide missile that switches to powered kinetic kill in the final stage. One hit could take out any battleship in one hit.

@@The_Republic_of_Ireland not as much as the AA20. It couldn't be used, it destroyed tracks, switches and was to strong for the couplers they used. It also couldn't reach max power or speed because of its incredibly undersized boiler. It was literally a novelty for most of its life.

The SR71 leaked fuel big time until it heated up. Having to hit a tanker for a full load not long after takeoff. Not a good idea for a commercial aircraft. And cadmium free tools were the only ones allowed. And they were expensive and highly controlled. We had too have them tested on a regular bases.

That I don't know. I'm not in the loop anymore. But, they have probably solved some of the issues by now. Or they wouldn't even consider building a commercial version.

Any Western hypersonic aircraft is likely to have Australian involvement as only the Woomera Test Facility is large enough to conduct hypersonic test flights outside Russia and China. The Woomera Test Facility covers nearly 20% of the Australian land mass and at Mach 5 would take around 12 minutes to traverse. In comparison, the Nevada test range would take around 90 seconds to traverse.

When i saw Australia in your comment i first thought you were thinking what i was thinking . A country like Australia is the reason why we need supersonic flights coz that 14 hr non stop flight that i once had from Vancouver to Brisbane was not fun. It takes long to fly to Australia from anywhere , even New Zealand is 3hrs away.

Just for your reference. Supersonic means beating the speed of sound. The speed of sound varies with altitude. Hypersonic means doubling, trebbleing etc that original mack speed. But you seemed to be comparing these in atmosphere speeds with the speed of light. There is no comparison. The speed of sound is something above 730 miles per hour, while the speed of light is 186,262 miles per second, or thereabouts.
Yes! Thank you beating me to writing this comment. Hyper-"sonic" flight is not going to get anyone even marginally closer to the faster-than-light speeds of Star Wars and Star Trek. The whole Star Wars vs. Star Trek bit at the beginning was amusing, but out of place in this discussion.

I have seen the X-15 in person, at the Wright-Patterson AFB Museum. Its free, if anyone is ever close to Dayton Ohio I highly recommend going. They have everything, SR-71, Stealth Fighter, Stealth Bomber, Avrocar, and so much more. All inside.

How about the Jim Creek Naval Radio Station in Washington? Built in the 50s, most powerful transmitter (1.2 MW), with about 14 miles (22 km) of antenna. It's pretty "mega".

The X-47B and the X-51 Waverider used a Pegasus rocket booster upon release from the B-52 to accelerate beyond supersonic before the air breathing SCRAM jet kicked in for the hypersonic part of the flight.

The X-15 was the most beautiful aircraft ever produced. It was the very pinnacle of American aerospace engineering and can-do attitude. As well as the envy of the free world.

I don't know why but each time you said 'crewed aircraft' I heard it as 'crude aircraft'. I was thinking "okay, it was early but still, all these x-planes are crude? that's harsh, Simon!" And then the rest of my brain finally woke up.
Star Trek over Star Wars earns an instant thumbs up from me. Well done, Simon. (full disclosure: I like Star Wars too, if it's a TV show. The movies are mostly kind of lame. Clone Wars and Mandalorian FTW).

A cautionary tale of how socialist central planning of housing creates awful homes.
At mach 3.2 the SR-71 was the most dangerous airplane to fly, they lost 1/3 the fleet to accidents. Supersonics were all the rage when testing began for commercial flights in the 1960s, but the planes ran into problems because of high costs and pollution concerns. Ultimately, The US SST system was quietly scrapped; only the Concorde, a British-French collaboration, ever saw long-term commercial service. The development of that aircraft was famously expensive, costing about 10 times its initial budget.
The Concorde was also a big polluter, burning two tons of fuel just taxiing and four times as much fuel per passenger as a Boeing 747. Because of its sonic boom, the jet was not allowed to reach supersonic speeds over land. It’s piss poor fuel economy meant it could only do transatlantic flights, leaving transpacific flights out of reach of a lucrative market. A 747 could fly FOUR times the passengers, twice the distance. And was apparent that without supercheap fuel, the economics of extended supersonic flight just didn’t work. The underlying problems of supersonic isn't easily overcome. A key barrier is noise itself. Despite its talk about “quiet” SSTs, Boom is supporting legislation that would exempt these jets from updated noise standards for takeoffs and landings for new aircraft. That’s a pretty stunning lack of confidence in its ability to deliver “quiet.”
Today’s subsonic engines are better. Boeing’s state of the art Dreamliner is up to 80 percent more fuel-efficient than the 747. But whatever the technology, a supersonic plane unavoidably wastes a lot more fuel than its subsonic competitors. And as the antiplanner notes “Airliners reach their high speeds by climbing high into the atmosphere where the air is thinner”
Supersonic planes must fly even higher, risk exposure of passengers to ionizing radiation at altitudes above 70,000 feet including cosmic rays.
Worse, Thus, if drag is proportional to the square of speed, then the power needed to overcome that drag is proportional to the cube of speed. YOU double the speed you quadruple! the drag. So a plane doing Mach 4 generates FOUR times more drag than a plane going mach 2 and must achieve an altitude of 150,000 feet to oppose drag, which robs potential oxygen for air thirsty engines. Doubling an airplane’s speed requires several times the energy, The SR-71 had a piss poor range of 2800 nautical miles; had to be refueled in midair TWICE to perform it's legendary reconnaissance missions.
Airlines generally preferred lower operating costs over higher speed. That's why airliners today are even slower than they were 50 years ago. A Boeing 707 flew 600+ miles an hour, todays jets average cruise is 485-550. By shaving 50-60 mph, they cut fuel consumption 15%. AND no airline would buy a plane to serve ONE or two specific routes. Super sonic flights sounds like a good idea, but in order for the company to be successful they have to make more routes. Hypersonic flight is an engineering challenge even the military hasn't solved economically. Which is why there are no hypersonic fighters.
Aerodynamic drag, also generates friction, and friction means temperature. To overcome that airplanes pushing hypersonic threshold required skins made of super alloys that could withstand these temps. One was Inconel, a special alloy that even today costs 15 dollars a pound.
They also forget another aspect; Every technological improvement that boosts the efficiency of supersonic/hypersonic flight, aircraft skin, engines, etc. Serves the needs of subsonic flight; when the fuel economy of the supersonic airliner improves 10-20%; by the time SST's manage to reach that; subsonic planes will have doubled their fuel economy which would render them supercompetitive not just against fast planes but now even trains.
And you forgot the thermal expansion thing and the fuel leaking problem, also it'd require a much higher flash point fuel!
