Silicon oil, polysiloxanes, is made by hydrolysis of dichlorodimethylsilane a toxic, hydrogen chloride, hydrochloric acid, muriatic acid, releasing acid, gas. This fun preparation, synthesis was performed in a professional laboratory, lab with a fume hood, safety equipment, rotary evaporator. Chemicals, toxic, MTBE, ether, hydrolysis, neutralization, reaction-. - Наука

Aloha sir. Do you know if oils will penetrate into silicone just by topically applying the oil to the surface of the silicone? Excuse my lack of knowledge of this area. Thank you.
I remember doing this reaction in school. I'm kinda a big guy and they had no lab coats in my size so my sleeves were a bit short. I was holding the bottle of dichlorodimethylsilane. Then I randomly had a massive spasm in my arm and threw the bottle into the fumehood, against the flask with water, shattering both. A massive cloud filled the fumehood so quick it could suck it all up. And with my short sleeves I had the HCl go way up my sleeves giving me burns on my arms. And that is the story about how I found out I have epilepsy. (My type of epilepsy comes with random spasms in my body)
If a big guy with random massive spasms would do chemistry videos, I would probably watch them! Sounds like fun... 😝
@@realedna eh my arm did not find it fun heh. I have a home lab though. So maybe one day
@@Feetkiller97 do you focus on anything in particular?
Wow, that sounds scary. I hope you're doing better!
@@oitthegroit1297 epilepsy is still there but my medication is very successful. The burns all healed completely so I'm okay yeah
In her Nobel lecture France's Arnold said it was hard to find an enzyme in nature that catalyses carbon to silicon bonds but you have just demonstrated that catalysis is unnecessary. Thanks, very interesting and informative.
Just wanted to say i appreciate your style. No nonsense vids, good content.
Cool! You already have a Chloromethane synthesis, if you add a dichlorodimethylsilane synthesis then we can see the full pathway!
I tried it and failed…. Maybe I’ll be more lucky with dibromodimethylsilane….
@@THYZOID there's the next video, looking forward to it!
I expected silicone oil to be more viscous but great video
Also the molecule is quite frightening but fascinating
Silicone Oil is also sometimes used in retinal detachment surgeries. It's pretty cool stuff.
Great video, thanks for showing us this interesting chemistry.
Do you have any idea how the viscosity is increased or decreased when producing silicone oil? Im sure its a matter of polymerization but how is it typically achieved?
Cool, Ive never seen this. Can't wait to hear about the new lab
This is still not my lab. I wish it were but it isn’t
Cool, now see if you can nitrate silicone (if it has OH groups, I don't know too too much about the chemistry of silicones)
After you scoring a fume hood for next to nothing, I'm waiting to hear how you got a rotavap for $50 or to just takeaway as junk. :D
Those are so useful tools but of course rotavap takes often quite a bit of room.
There are few chemicals I have more resentment for than silicone oil (and silicone grease).
It is an absolute pain to clean up.
Adding caustic soda can be a good way to break down alkyl siloxanes.
@@drhaese I don't really see myself cleaning everything with caustic soda...
@@piranha031091 especially not if it was used as lube...
@@drhaese manganese heptoxide causes it to downright explode! Something I didn't expect from something non flammable.... I wonder why, any ideas?
@@petevenuti7355 Mn2O7 decomposes anyway if contacted with many chemicals. Any reducing functional group being present will cause explosion as well.
Really it is very informative. This silicone oil is D4 (cyclic) or linear? Regards, Pradeep
both
You have your own rotovape? That's really cool! I how do you fund this? Those can't be cheap - I've always wanted one.
I wish it were mine…. I haven’t filmed in my own lab for the past two weeks
Lab equipment aint bad for basic stuff. Now the specialized distilling heads and exotic glassware can get expensive.
Will the silicone oil shown here dissolve dried silicone? Looking for non-caustic way of loosening stuck silicone without mechanical contact. If this isn't it, any suggestions?
The only reaction where you can be happy about a big grease peak in the nmr...
Silicone Oil is used in Gauge faces(pressure gauges)
Alternative you buy silicone oil spray and empty it into a jar and then let the solvents and propellent evaporate and you get silicone oil for very chep.
Great synthesis. Can you make diffusion pump type silicone oil like this...
Thats going to have a very large amount of cyclic siloxanes, and no M groups, almost silicone oil, but missing the last step :P
You should employ funnels to transfare materials so that your joints stays nice and clean, otherwise very interesting reaction would of though you would need to heat hydrolysis product to achieve condensation.
It was heated in the rotovap. More heating might give longer chains though
Very nice brother
Liked the observation that it is often found as a hydraulic fluid, was it? $
What is the molecular weight of the produced silicone oil, and how is this controlled?
You may increase chain length by heating the oil. I might do a separate video on this
@@THYZOIDI want to buy. for everyday use silicon oil.can you help me for that?
@@goahara1699 Yeah literally go to any major online reseller and look for silicone oil
What is the best silicone used for personal sex lubricant and what viscosity should it be?
how can i dry oil silicone on paper And plastic fastly ?
I would like to see a preparation of trimethylchlorosilane. Methyl chloride reaction with copper-silicon alloy at 300C.
Tried it and it failed. Will try again someday using bromomethane
Can you make 1200 cst silicone oil with same method
Who sells dimethyldichlorosilane? Seems like a sigma aldrich kind of item, shame smaller chem retailers don't seem to have it.
This bottle was directly from Merck.
Im working on a silicone grease project at work right now. This shit just wont stay in his NLGI class. Its pain
How do you thicken it, silicone oil is thick, sir?
By heating it the oil should become more viscous
@@THYZOID can the process use methylene chloride and Silicone dioxide sir?
I get it from the school storage.
What is the machine next to the rotary evaporator?
that machine is a vacuum pump
@@THYZOID Then that's the most complicated vacuum pump I have ever seen. Sure, it probably makes life a bit easier for the chemists who use it, but I would really hate to think how much it would cost to fix it if it broke down.
@@douro20 yeahhhh they are pretty damn expensive but therefore they are chemically resistant and you can control the exact vacuum
We need a method for making synthetic automobile oil
silicone oil has a temperature at witch it becomes a solid right? once it burns off?
Yeah at some point it’ll polymerize even more
It's there any way to manipulate the viscosity / molecular weight of the final product?
With heating you may increase the viscosity
What happens if you ignite silicone oil ?
it would form SiO2, H2O and CO2
Self made Gleitgel. Nice.
This oil contain any radiation when it heated?
no
@@THYZOID which chemical contain low radiation when it is heated
@@THYZOID that low radiation oil contain 0.8cvm and it is contain the nature opposes the Gama rays that oil called magnetic oil is it true
Faskinating!

Everyday Uses ;-D
Cool
I imagine that fries cooked in silicone oil won't taste too good!
Macdonald's never had a problem
Expected magic, nah just add water :) but interesting still...
Interesting
Mmm silicon fried eggs
heh,lustig ein deutscher,
musste mir silikon ül spray mal kaufen damit der uubiks speedcube nich klemmt und auseinander fliegt :P
rekord 30 sekunden oder so btw :D
I expected there to be more to it! I was hoping to learn what precursor made oil vs sand , how to control viscosity , how to make the precursors themselves. Catalysts. Maybe even reactions will other organics.
But hey , I got what I voted for , and in a way it was better then anything any us citizens can say about many of the last few presidents.😜
