They regularly tried something different musically, nearly from their beginnings - songs like Start Over, Page, The Dragon Cries, About Us. So Bestie is not that surprising, especially as it is a collaboration. It's not a question of a radical change of direction, but simply of opening a door and observing what's behind it.
At a 2023 fest in St. Louis, Band-Maid linked up with Mike Einzinger of Incubus (interesting story in itself), which subsequently led to this collaboration. Mike came up with the main riffs and Band-Maid worked out the instrumentation, vocals, and lyrics. Miku wrote the lyrics in English, although I'm pretty sure she got some help, since they're basically flawless. When Incubus were in Tokyo a couple of weeks ago, Band-Maid did a lead-in set, and about half the way through, Mike came on stage and they played Bestie. It was great. Saiki did most of the set design and I think the dress as well, but I'm sure someone will comment to fill in the details about that part.

Last time they hooked up with an American to do a colab was on " dragon cries" and that also sounded different
Ur right it is different, it's a collaboration with mikeychan of incubus he composed the music with them , miku wrote the lyrics, they chose to wear different outfits bc of it
This is a one off. Collaboration with Incubus. This grew on me too. Feel good song with great basslines, tasty drum fills another great guitar solo. I love how they can not only play anything, but be awesome at everything.
I'm sure that Miku wrote the lyrics with the members in mind.
When Saiki listened to this music and read the lyrics, she imagined two best friends traveling in the wilderness. That is the cover illustration of this song.
This damn song makes me cry about 1x out of 10. It's natural. The sentiments ring true for me in my life. My past is far larger than my future and so I've said goodbye a lot lately.

It's a lovely song but almost certainly not a new direction. As mentioned above, the music was co-written with Mike E. and it definitely has his fingerprints. It's a single. Unlike some other folks, I don't expect it on the new album, although it's possible as a change of pace. You'll find they've released a few songs that are outside of their typical lane. They're usually one-off singles, not album tracks. The Conquerer album might be the exception and I doubt they're going that way this time around.
They're still writing and recording the album and, judging by the hints they've dropped, it will not primarily sound much like this song. "Many intense songs," "heavy," "difficult drums," and "poor Akane" have been uttered. No other writing/recording collaborations have been mentioned but, if there is one, we'll probably know before June 12.
I think the word you’re searching for might be “fresh”…? It’s has a different meaning, fresh new feeling to it. I think, absolutely, they deliberately took a different approach with this song, co-writing the music with Mikey-chan, guitarist Mike Einzinger, of INCUBUS…absolutely wanted to see what else they could create. If it reaches a bigger, popular Andy, so be it. If not, nothing lost.
[Bestie, co-written by Michael Einziger of Incubus.] MISA's playing and bass tone are setting new standards... and Akane's drumming is so in-the-pocket and distinguishable... and Kanami's solo is Daydreaming masterful! The recording and mix are as enjoyable as the song and beautiful MV! Miku’s English lyrics (I bet with Saiki and Mikey-chan's influence) are heartfelt. "I can't look into your eyes." Is Band-Maid a band of fashion-forward, trend-setting Besties? 💞 Thx, Mikey & Band-Maid... and Red!

Of course their latest song Bestie is obligatory, I like it very much. If you would like to listen to some classics: Freedom (live!!!!!), Manners (MV will do) and the MVs of Influencer, Dice, Daydreaming, Warning, Shambles, Alone and About is.
