    I live in Ontario, Canada, and was introduced to the VFL in the 1970s when matches from Channel 7 were (somehow) shown on the PBS station in Detroit. Australian Footy (stop with the "Aussie Rules" stuff, OK??) is the greatest team sport in the world, in my far-from-humble opinion. Really appreciated seeing the comparisons of the grounds they used this past season - Thanks for this!!

      @har234908234 Год назад +2

      I'm a Melburnian. You're right that people would call it "footy" here. My dad and uncle played in the seniors in the VFL... but thanks to a PE teacher/football coach who was a bit of a tool I played "soccer" - which some of us would provocatively call "football" around footy players. I can tell you that people told me I should play "football" and would use "Aussie Rules" to clarify when I said I did! That was a common distinguishing name around me at that time. Footy more likely means rugby (probably league) in Sydney and Brisbane. Channel 9 here aired a different "The Footy Show" in QLD and NSW for NRL fans when it aired an AFL version for the rest of the country. People seem to say "AFL footy/football" when required now.

    5:03. Bowl stadiums often end up looking lifeless, even with a good crowd in, but the 'G' always looks majestic. Whenever I see it it's hard not to think of all the great and different eras it's been through, with antique styled member's stands and modern facilties, and it still retains that class.

    Not so sure that the number of cricketers hinted at here played AF in their offseason. If you go to the MCG Long Room there is a photo of Bradman's Invincibles all decked out in baseball uniforms after a game. Several players from that team and era would have cut it as professionals. Look up the details for Neil Harvey and his talented brothers. If you look up records of a letter held at Australian Museum Sydney you will find a letter written by the great Victor Trumper to a schoolboy that wrote to him. Victor had played baseball with the Paddington Club at a time when the Moore Park area had several sports played.
    It was fitting that in 2014 the SCG was converted to a MLB standard facility to host the season opening series between LAD and ARI. It commemorated what had happened a century earlier. Time lapse imagery of the conversion is on YT.

    I agree as a American AFL Premiership Gran Final always should be at the MCG . But if they keep your state of Victoria closed it should move until they end this insane lockdown in your area

      Well, Tassie is a real word, I guess. But I'm from the state of Victoria.

    I wish AFL stadiums were more narrow that way the sport would fit perfectly in rectangle stadiums at least American stadiums which tend to be kind of oval in shape (College Stadiums at least), the main reason why Aussie Rules hasn't speared WorldWide in spite of being spectacle (Iam not an Australian), and Cricket Nations don't really ..ummm...they suck ok

      There's a version made for rectangular fields.
