I grew up in an urban city, Camden NJ, 5 miles out of Philadelphia, and an African American female. I was around 14, when I first watched Coal Miner Daughter, joined her fan club, and read her book. That was the beginning to my journey to country Music. When I graduated high school in 1984 and was accepted to Tennessee State University, just to be in the same state with her and went to her store on Music Row. It's through this great lady, I started my Loretta Lynn collection of albums and Conway, through her, came my awareness of everyone else, but for me it will always be Loretta Lynn, also because we share the same birthday month, hers is the 14th and mine is the 20th of April. My friends used to tease me, how you listening to country music and crack jokes, Rap music was hitting hard on and breaking onto the scene at that time, but I had Loretta, Patsy, Tammy, Waylon and Hank Jr among others. Godspeed Mrs Lynn and thank you and Mooney for your contribution to music. MUCH LOVE to the family and God's peace.
Beautiful Words. God Bless you. Good music is just that. No color or anything else. I'm 58 white, male and would never deny myself Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Elton John, Freddie Mercury, James Brown, Ray Charles because I am not black or gay. Great music is just great music.
Crying for the loss of a great lady I never met, but who I grew up listening to. I feel like she shaped the lives of so many women in the world. She will be deeply missed.
My goodness.. So right!!! Loved it that day and today!!! Such a great tribute from him. And the young man enjoying every second of it in the front row melted my heart. Pure joy!💗
I have had a strong and passionate hatred for country music while growing up. Isn't it wonderful when one song can reach into your heart and change a lifelong feeling? The magic of well made music. Thank you Jack White and Loretta Lynn for opening my ears and my heart.
When I was kid I grew up on country music. I couldn't name you a rock and roll song. Then I had kids that loved classic rock. I can name any Stones, ACDC, Lynard Skynyrd, CCR, Kansas, Metallica song and a host of others in the first three notes.
I love you GREAT AUNT LORETTA YOUR THE GREATEST LONG LIVE THE QUEEN OF COUNTRY MUSIC UNCLE DOO MAY BE GONE BUT HES SMILEING DOWN FROM HEAVEN ON HIS OWN VAN LEAR ROSE I LOVE YOU AUNTY!!!!!
I miss Loretta. This song is so brilliant. Their Grammy was well deserved. I love this lady with all my heart. And Jack White is amazing. Im so glad they came together. He did great at her tribute/memorial show at Grand Ole Opry.
The whole album was recorded in 2 sessions, with no fancy production tricks, none of the usual modern approach of processing the soul out of a piece of music, because the best way to record Loretta was just have her write a bunch of songs and record them.
God bless miss white Lynn one of the brightest stars in the heavens god bless her and her family great loss missed and loved by all god bless you Loretta Lynn you are now with pasty Cline having fun together
This is probably my favorite song of Loretta's. I had the great pleasure of visiting Butcher Holler several years ago. Her brother Herman gave us a tour of the family home place. It was a beautiful experience, and this song is a genuine snapshot of that life. And that's the thing about Loretta. She was genuine. She wrote and sang what she knew. She lived quite a life and left an incredible legacy. I'm praying she's reunited with Patsy Cline and all her loved ones and that they're singing together once again.
Hey all you Loretta fans if you haven't already done so you need to listen to her latest album "Full Circle". For a 84 yr old woman Loretta has still got it going on. Her voice and song writing abilities are still top-notch. These so-called 'country stars' of today aren't fit to polish this 'Queen of Country's' boots
I sing this with my boyfriend. I'm nearly 63, and my daddy was a coal miner from Puke county. I had 8 siblings. I sing it in memory of my beautiful momma.
Loretta Lynn is a strong country lady that is a proud Kentucky coal miners daughter. I'm also a proud Kentucky country woman and I'm also a great granddaughter coal miner.
My first country music concert was at the War Memorial in Rochester, NY, I saw this Beautiful Strong Southern Woman, Loretta Lynn, announced by Mr Ernest Tubb, I was in awe and she was the reason I poured my Heart & Soul into Country Music and became a songwriter myself, Also on that stage that night was a very young Tanya Tucker, 3 Legends in one amazing night of music that I’ve never forgotten, Thank You Miss Loretta for your influence and your music that got me through the hard times in my life, You will never be forgotten, R.I.P. Loretta ❤️🩹🙏😢
I saw Loretta Lynn for my first time this weekend in Lake Charles, LA. She was a hoot! She opened with "They Don't Make;m Like My Daddy." Love that song and all of her songs. Her story reminds me of my mother and father. Sweet memories. It was beautiful to see her daughters and son with her. I only wished they would have all sang a song together. It was truly a family event. I think everyone in the audience felt like an extended part of her family. You do not go to many concerts and come away feeling like you have been to a family reunion. At least not nowadays. It was truly country music at its finest!
I wasn't born there, but lived at the mouth of butcher holler for a while, went to Johnson central high school in the early 80's. Got to see her and doo at the apple festival, wasn't a fan then, just a teenager into rock.
Van Lear coal mine back then was one hard to be in. Johnson county i only remember my family moving there for work and watching my own daddy leave one day in his 1967 Oldsmobile to go get my mom...ill just leave it at that
I’m a holla girl and proud of it. I’m come far , you’d never know, but my roots are strong. From Mason Hollow to Paris or Tokyo….i love me some Loretta
LYRICS One of my fondest memories Was sittin' on my daddy's knee Listenin' to the stories that he told He'd pull out that old photograph Like a treasured memory from the past And say child This here's the Van Lear Rose Oh how it would bring a smile When he talked about her big blue eyes And how her beauty ran down to her soul She'd walk across the coal miner's yard Them miner's would yell loud and hard And they'd dream of who would hold The Van Lear Rose She was the belle of Johnson County Ohio river to Big Sandy A beauty to behold like a diamond in the coal All the miner's they would gather 'round Talk about the man that came to town Right under their nose Stole the heart of the Van Lear Rose Now the Van Lear Rose could've had her pick And all the fellers figured rich Until this poor boy caught her eye His buddies would all laugh and say Your dreamin' boy she'll never look your way You'll never ever hold the Van Lear Rose She was the belle of Johnson County Ohio river to Big Sandy A beauty to behold like a diamond in the coal All the miner's they would gather 'round Talk about the man that came to town Right under their nose Stole the heart of the Van Lear Rose Then one night in mid July Underneath that ol' blue Kentucky sky Well, that poor boy won that beauty's heart Then my daddy would look at my mommy and smile As he brushed the hair back from my eyes and he'd say Your mama She's the Van Lear Rose She was the belle of Johnson County Ohio river to Big Sandy A beauty to behold like a diamond in the coal All the miner's they would gather 'round Talk about the man that came to town Right under their nose Stole the heart of the Van Lear Rose Right under their nose Stole the heart of the Van Lear Rose
I hadn't heard this song until today and saw it mentioned in an Internet piece about the Big Sandy River. My ears perk up when I hear these things mentioned, as I grew up in Paintsville in Johnson County. Dwight Yoakam's "Bury Me" mentions the Big Sandy, too. These folks may have left eastern Kentucky, but they kept a place in their hearts for it.
My father found his rose , they’re entwined throughout eternity in love . They will forever be missed and loved . 🍀🌹To the family of Loretta , my sincere condolences on her passing and her music brought so many people joy . 🎤❤

Queen home Sept.8th and 26 days later our Queen of Country Music was called home, lord knows she will be missed by all of us, no matter what age, color, gender, or religion. The only thing that mattered to Loretta was for everyone to be kind, smile, and love one another. She don't have to miss DoLittle anymore. So many thoughts and prayers to the entire Lynn family.
I'll admit I think she gets better as she ages. I would be a fan but I took my mother to see her in Myrtle beach SC years ago and after the show we went around back by her bus and when she came walking out the back door she put her head down and never looked at anyone out there. That broke my mom's heart so I lost all respect for her at that moment.
Always a lovely song...now an inspiration...because a Van Lear Rose has been revealed in my life. For sure, she has many admirers...many rich, many successful. I would not say that I have stolen her heart completely...yet...but...she is definitely tempted to give her heart to me and she already gives me all of her spare time. One of our first magic moments was in mid-July. If you would, please wish with me that our story ends the same...and I always bless her life the way she blesses mine.
An unsurpassed legend and stellar songwriter at such a high level, I can barely see her pinnacle of light. Yet at the same time, I totally believe that she was the type of person who'd invite you in her kitchen to sample her cornbread, piping hot out of the oven, served on the finest china or paper plates... it wouldn't have mattered... it was just that good. Just like her music. Reaching to the depths of the heart and soul. Thank you, Loretta, for taking chances, sharing your incredible talent, and not being afraid to just be yourself.
When my sister and I were young, we thought our mom was Loretta Lynn, because her long black curly hair was just like Mom's... Cheers to her Native heritage!
Love this beautiful song….I got my van Lear rose too…rich guys smart guys guys with it all, and she chose this hard working poorboy and she’s still loving me and she is beautiful still to this day seen her off to work this morning and realized iam a lucky man and to have a beautiful woman in my life this loving and she chose me.. my van Lear rose 🌹

Lovely story.
wow that's incredible. I'm also from nj and found a similar path to country music.
Crying for the loss of a great lady I never met, but who I grew up listening to. I feel like she shaped the lives of so many women in the world. She will be deeply missed.
but don't fear, she walked proud and cut trail for many, many, many. 😊😊👍💥
I still miss her dearly. Like a beloved family member.
We lost her today. Godspeed Loretta. Forever the Queen of Country Music. This is my favorite Loretta album. She and Jack White were magical together
💯🌹💯
I know I can never proof this But... I said Loretta with Jack that's got to be good. Can't prove it,. But very much enjoyed it.
💯 plus 1,000 correct 😊
I just watched Jack Whites very emotional rendition of this song that he played on at her memorial service. What a song.
My goodness.. So right!!! Loved it that day and today!!! Such a great tribute from him. And the young man enjoying every second of it in the front row melted my heart. Pure joy!💗

Johnny cash was another artist who worked with non country artist.
Reading that made me indescribably happy. Music always finds a way to bridge the gap.
Welcome aboard sir!!!!
A lot of what is deemed country music today isn't country at all; It's manufactured shit.
When I was kid I grew up on country music. I couldn't name you a rock and roll song. Then I had kids that loved classic rock. I can name any Stones, ACDC, Lynard Skynyrd, CCR, Kansas, Metallica song and a host of others in the first three notes.
Loretta was such a bad ass. One of a kind. We are all better for having shared time with her on this rock we call home.
I love you GREAT AUNT LORETTA YOUR THE GREATEST LONG LIVE THE QUEEN OF COUNTRY MUSIC UNCLE DOO MAY BE GONE BUT HES SMILEING DOWN FROM HEAVEN ON HIS OWN VAN LEAR ROSE I LOVE YOU AUNTY!!!!!

And Loretta was 72 years of age and her vocals were cut in one take. Young ones could only wish they could do this. The whole album is a masterpiece
This album never gets old I can listen over and over....
Tabitha Miller My x wife burnt it DOWN. I still love the LADY BUT HAD TO BAIL OUT.
God bless miss white Lynn one of the brightest stars in the heavens god bless her and her family great loss missed and loved by all god bless you Loretta Lynn you are now with pasty Cline having fun together

got that fucking right mate.
I don’t think you could have said that any better. PREACH
the amazing thing is she was admired across so many eras and music genres. Sad we have lost another legend.
All children love hearing about how their parents met. This makes me cry because I remember my parents and how they met.
I'm 30 minutes from Van Lear. I regret not listening to Loretta Lynn much until now but I think I'll change that.
2-19-2014, that is the date my mother passed away due to cancer. This song reminds me of her. You never realize these things until they are gone.
I sing this with my boyfriend. I'm nearly 63, and my daddy was a coal miner from Puke county. I had 8 siblings. I sing it in memory of my beautiful momma.

There's something about a legend that just being a great singer can't touch. Loretta Lynn is a legend.

Funny how we find are way back to the same Ole stuff.
My mother was also born in Van Lear and married a poor boy. This could easily be about her.
It is.
I wasn't born there, but lived at the mouth of butcher holler for a while, went to Johnson central high school in the early 80's. Got to see her and doo at the apple festival, wasn't a fan then, just a teenager into rock.
Funny
Same here. My great grandma is first cousin to Loretta's mother.
Grieving a woman I’ve never met emotions are a heck of a thing

LYRICS
One of my fondest memories
Was sittin' on my daddy's knee
Listenin' to the stories that he told
He'd pull out that old photograph
Like a treasured memory from the past
And say child
This here's the Van Lear Rose
Oh how it would bring a smile
When he talked about her big blue eyes
And how her beauty ran down to her soul
She'd walk across the coal miner's yard
Them miner's would yell loud and hard
And they'd dream of who would hold
The Van Lear Rose
She was the belle of Johnson County
Ohio river to Big Sandy
A beauty to behold like a diamond in the coal
All the miner's they would gather 'round
Talk about the man that came to town
Right under their nose
Stole the heart of the Van Lear Rose
Now the Van Lear Rose could've had her pick
And all the fellers figured rich
Until this poor boy caught her eye
His buddies would all laugh and say
Your dreamin' boy she'll never look your way
You'll never ever hold the Van Lear Rose
She was the belle of Johnson County
Ohio river to Big Sandy
A beauty to behold like a diamond in the coal
All the miner's they would gather 'round
Talk about the man that came to town
Right under their nose
Stole the heart of the Van Lear Rose
Then one night in mid July
Underneath that ol' blue Kentucky sky
Well, that poor boy won that beauty's heart
Then my daddy would look at my mommy and smile
As he brushed the hair back from my eyes and he'd say
Your mama
She's the Van Lear Rose
She was the belle of Johnson County
Ohio river to Big Sandy
A beauty to behold like a diamond in the coal
All the miner's they would gather 'round
Talk about the man that came to town
Right under their nose
Stole the heart of the Van Lear Rose
Right under their nose
Stole the heart of the Van Lear Rose
Rest in Peace Loretta . thanks for the music

Loretta Lynn and Jack White are both genius! What a beautiful song.

My dad was a huge fan of Loretta's. I'd like to think he was waiting for her at Heaven's gate and helped show her around.
love this song, what a great tribute to her mama
