- Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh was one of the most influential spiritual figures of India of the 20th century. He wrote over 300 books in English on all manner of spiritual subjects, and they were (and are) read world-wide.
Abbot George Burke (Swami Nirmalananda Giri) was fortunate to meet Swami Sivananda in the last year of his life at Sivanandashram in Rishikesh on the banks of the Ganga (Ganges) in the foothills of the Himalayas, and has recorded a number of podcasts of his reminiscenses with Sivananda (see the links below.)
Swami Sivananda’s joyful sense of humor are evident in this podcast, to which we have added photos and videos. This includes the following incidents:
• Sivananda’s riddle and the over-serious student.
• The story of the rare color film photos of Swamiji.
• Sivananda’s omniscience regarding what was going on in Sivanandashram.
• What it was like at satsangs with Sivanandaji.
• Two interviews with Sivananda, and Sivananda’s important advice for success in spiritual life.

Shivananda was a Medical doctor in Mayanmar before going back to India, not unless we ate talking about two different Shivanandas.
You are correct. Even as a doctor he was extremely service minded.

Ramakrishna used to say the same. Just say, chant, the name of God (any name, Rama, Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, Allah). But I have a little doubt, just the name alone... a full mantra is not needed? If I only chant Kali, Kali, Kali, would it be enough? Just like that? Just pointing out the last minute of the video.
Anandamayi Ma said formal mantras were not necessary. I would suppose each person must decide for himself.
