One thing I think makes sense is to ration your boost out so you run out exactly when you get to a new can, another thing Ive observed is that trying to boost a lot when youre very slow (e.g. at the beginning of a stage) it tends to just waste your boost. So, boost less when youre slow, and manage your boost so you dont come short, but you use all of it. Hope this helps
