Bonding is to strengthen the fabric to make it more rigid or to add more body to the fabric. In the real world you would use some type of interfacing to achieve the same result. Skiving is the process in reducing the thickness so that it is pliable for folding or manipulation without weakening. Usually used in leather crafting.
