- Big thanks to www.winyourdre... for sponsoring the vlog and putting up the epic prize of the BMC! Closes tonight so good luck!
Training camps can always be hit and miss - anything else to add here that I haven't covered?
www.winyourdre...
last camp I ever went on, my roomie decided rather than bring a big tub of carb powder, he'd decant it into small bags. when his bag was x-ray'd and customs picked this up because a spanner set off the machine, he was called back from the departure lounge. he made the flight with minutes to spare after customs thought he was smuggling drugs!! so, pro-tip - always put your cocaine in a tub of High-5
😂
I did a track racing camp with 2 good friends of mine to Trinidad & Tobago for their Easter cycling festival. It was 2 nights in Arima, 1 night in San Fernando. There was night in the capital for a criterium. There were lots of other events. But I could only bring my track bike. Like Alex mentioned, manage your efforts. Coming from Northeastern USA winter/spring to Caribbean heat/humitiy is a shock to the system. We arrived a day early just to ride around and the first racing night I just sat in the bunch and enjoyed the atmosphere. The locals were fit compared to us visitors who were still finding form. But the focus of our trip was to experience the culture - people, food, cycling passion and take a preme or win when we could. I ate a lot! Such a fun trip. That I went back a couple years later.
It was my first time traveling with a bike, too. Fearing the baggage handlers I brought my steel track frame in used bike box all taped up. But brought my race wheels and a spare training rear wheel. And all my track cogs, rings and tools. Everything got there/came back ok. One of my most memorable bike adventures.
Brilliant video. I’m a coach and I’ve seen so many people come back from training camps in a complete state, often they have put themselves back a month or so. They’d have been better off giving me the money and me burning it so we could keep warm in the UK.
Did almost all of these (apart from the diet one) last week. Now I'm pretty sick 😂
Great tips AD.
Ive ran many training camps in the high mountains of Thailand (200 - 500 riders at a time) and the biggest tips I can say is make sure you focus every hour/day on getting enough sleep/water and sugar.
It is SO easy to turn a training camp into a total burn out from excess cortisol release by failing to listen to your bodies needs of sleep, water and sugar.
The reason I stay 4% body fat year round EASILY is because I always pay attention to these 3 obsessively.
I never had the talent or desire to be a pro rider but Ive lost count how many WT riders Ive helped with this basic stuff so they could stay skinny and strong the right way. The easy way.
Very knowledgeable advice, thanks!
Don't no 1: do *not* crash on your first day. Even if you're excited by the environment - keep calm: it's more likely to break your bones than getting a decent KOM in Mallorca 😂
I’m guessing the same can apply if you can’t go anywhere and do a self training camp at home
As an amateur cyclist who doesn't have the genetics to break the 3w/kg FTP barrier, I agree with this advice.
Alex will there be any content on your cars/racing? I enjoyed the Matt Stephens Sigma podcast and seeing the 911 and hearing about your Dad's racing career
Motor racing can be a fast track to bankruptcy if you're not careful. It's OK at kart level
Right on time on 4th I go off to glorious malorca first time :^)
You will enjoy it, Mallorca is a fantastic place for cycling, I go myself tomorrow :)
RULE no.1 - never ever do things as pro's do, exactly these jumps - ruclips.net/video/qzQ84s4Hthc/видео.html
So, unless you’re already training say +3h per day, is it worth going on a training camp as I get the impression you’re more likely to burn out on camp or have a poor few weeks immediately after?
It still very much is. Both because it is just as much a holiday (go enjoy not working) for non-pro riders and also because you can ride more than normal when you dont have work, you have better time to recover from day to day and the weather is good. You can go do 3-4h rides if you normally do 2h rides. Just that there is no need to go from 2h to 6h, at that point it is just overtraining. Hope the answer makes sense :)
@@ejorgensen16 makes absolute sense 😊
It’s lovely to ride in places with great views and only 10% the amount of traffic. If you are doing less than 10 hours a week at home, just rename it a cycling holiday and go out every few days on the bike.
@The Cycling Student to add to this point, if you structure the week so that you're not doing big days back to back, you can avoid getting too fatigued.
If you're going for bulk riding in the camp, monitor your efforts. If you keep hitting zone 5+ hard then you're just going to fatigue and then fail to complete the rides.
Hasn’t gone to plan for my daughter and a Saint Piran teammate on Mallorca.
Floods and 60mph winds in Port de Pollença and heavy snow in the mountains. Flying home Friday so that’s a load of money wasted 😢
your own fault for considering it okay to fly somewhere just because you are to whiny to cycle in winter. let it be a lesson learned

I would read it properly. Not me.🤦🏻♂️
Perhaps everyone should stay in the uk to train then?🥱
Just skip going to Mallorca in the winter, it might be Spain but the weather is much better in Malaga, Calpe or Gran Canaria :)
@@ejorgensen16
I’ll be sure to let Ineos know they’ve been getting wrong for the past 13, years and the organisers of the Challenge Mallorca should move their race.🤦🏻♂️
@@TheTrev53 calpe is best
My training campus in my shed
rule nr 1 , more is always better
eet sleep ride repeat 🤪
hey alex i saw a teammate of yours in Girona do you know who it is?
Half of my old team live in girona, along with the conti team. So the list of possibilities is vast 😅
Wise owl 👌
I would say that for the vast majority of the people viewing this the order is wrong. Point 6 "Enjoy yourself" should be the clear primary goal. All the training goals and advice is frankly not really important for the Average Joe watching this (although we amateurs love living the illusion that our training level is really important).
I think the clue there is in the bit in brackets to be honest :) thanks for the feedback
@@AlexDowsettOfficial yeah, thanks for the reply, good content!
half wheeling isnt a thing, its not the guys fault who's half wheeling ahead its the guys fault who's trying to keep up, just go at your own pace.
If there’s half wheeling it isn’t a group ride or it’s an ego trip. Trust me when I say that after 2 decades of racing, I know a half wheeler when I see one
found the half wheeler
@@aizins3420 not me im too light and slow my zone 2 is 12--13mph. i let ppl ride away from me but i have the occasional bursts when im feeling it. im free not bound to rules never allowing myself to be marginalized by others or myself.
