Sometimes it can be really difficult (feels almost impossible). When you learn.. its not that hard starting.

That bike is in great shape. I miss my KX250.
The lean over fills the carb a bit more kinda priming it and so does couple slow revolutions on kicker sucks in a bit of fuel .
I don't see why people do weird shit to start the bike I have a kx500 and I kick it once and it starts

Good vid, had a few hours on the big KX bought my '98 new and traded it on an '04 when I heard it was the run out model. I agree with the start up ritual but I might add, when you kick it, keep the throttle closed and always wear your boots 'coz that kickstarter will rip your leg open, like it did mine one day when I had a pair of runners on. Ambulance and 20 stitches later, thank you Doctor.Never needed to lean it over first before starting but I guess gravity always finds it's feet. They're a nice bike to ride, it'll pull the wheel up in 5th without a problem, when you get some traction, I used to love doing that just for a smile ..
My 94 kx500 ripped my leg open and twisted my knee so bad I limped for a year seriously. And I had boots on but you need extra heavy duty boots to be safe. I raced mine years ago but now to old to kick it over and I know how to start it putting piston at top dead center first. I have had allot who want to buy it but won't sell it to them because I know they will get hurt in the first 5 minutes. If you burp this bike with traction it will instantly go over backwards. The guy I bought it from had knee surgery because of starting this bike and the reason he sold it to me. It's a big piston and makes huge huge power. I never leaned mine over, just slowly turned it over with kick starter 3 times and it started but these bikes are scary to start if you make one mistake like your boot slipping off the kick starter, brutal.
Got 200 plus hours on the KX500. They start Ok . Takes a little while for them to warm up though. I always gave them at least 5-6 minutes before I clicked into first gear.

One question , why did you tip it over?
thats helps a lot starting because 500 2t needs ALOT fuel to cylinder.. then finding 'spot' and kick as hard u can.. the 'Beast' should awake..
To get gas to the carb
It makes the gas in the bowl of the carb leak into the cylinder, helping with starting. Trust me, kicking over a big bore 2 stroke is not something you wanna do all day.

Starting a 500cc 2 stroke isn hard if it runs right!
Thank You I keep mine serviced and crisp, fuel and choke on a couple man kicks. And just let it warm up.

The KX500 was thought to be the ugliest bike out of the 500 lineup. But it was the beast, it had more HP than the CR500 cuz it had the powervalve. I have a CR500 but I envy this bike. I want this bike. The only way I can start up mine is to pull up choke, full throttle with 2 short kicks, lean bike the side till gas comes out of carb, align to TDC and Kick it like there is no tomorrow. I carry a bucket to the side to give me kicking leverage.

Yes they started the bike but they have no idea what they’re doing you don’t let a two-stroke sit there and idol what’s that thing fires up you hold it wide open to clear what’s loaded up in the bottom and the smoke clears and you can let off second of all your two-stroke should never be able to idle on its own you have it set way too high
