When I was young I had a dream I had sex with a dolphin in a swimming pool. The slippery slimy dolphin was really intriguing to me and yeah I was young and male, I'm still male to this day.

Maybe the communication experiment could have gotten somewhere if they'd paid attention to basic biology and realized dolphins can't form the same sounds as us. They just needed to try teaching it English via Morse code (like how a gorilla was taught sign language). It probably wouldn't have been able to learn much more than a few simple words, but it would have been easier than just talking to it and expecting it to magically turn into a parrot.
The gorilla thing was actually debunked but I get the point haha
Yeah, scientists doubt that Koko was actually using sigm language. I also love how you casually say "ahhh, just teach it Morse code." LOL!! Yeah, just run down to the convenience store and pick up a "teach dolphins Morse code" kit
There is video proof that the gorilla definitely learned and used some hand signs (probably nowhere near as many as those teaching it claimed). My point is, the gorilla did learn to at least mimic hand signing, even if it never understood what it was saying (and certainly couldn't form any full sentences), so the dolphin, just like it learned to mimic the tone of the woman's voice, could likely have learned to mimic a click/squeal version of Morse code. Again, as I said, they probably wouldn't get any further than associating a few words with specific actions, but it is a far better tactic than expecting their throats and mouths to transform to something capable of making human sounds. It's not like Morse code is all that complicated. I learned the entire alphabet in one night just for fun. They could've at least taught it .._. _____ _____ _..
You can see a very similar thing today where dogs and cats are given buttons that play human words. The animal pushes the button that will say the word "food" when they are hungry or "outside" when they need to go out or even the name of a family member that they are looking for. We know they can't vocalize like us, so they are given a different way to communicate these simple ideas. Even if they don't understand the concepts of the words themselves (I'd say it's doubtful they ever will, regardless of what their owners like to think about how smart they are), they eventually understand what actions typically follow them.
I'm sure the scientists were aware of this, the story is either oversimplified or the scientists were taking advantage of the woman's stupidity for the lol's.
I find it rather amusing that SO MANY people are SO QUICK to decry how the Dolphins are so inferior... along with Gorillas, Cats, and any other ORGANIC BRAINS we've found on planet earth, while they often the same people SO QUICK to be impressed by our Artificial Intelligence progresses and the chance for our robots to challenge us or take over the world...
Just because something or someone is intelligent DOES NOT MEAN it's going to blindly agree with you. It doesn't even mean it's going to arguably perceive or interact with the world in ways you approve of.
SO far as I've seen, and I've seen quite a bit... The machine learning is still just overtly sophisticated math and code... nothing especially self aware or intelligent on its own...
The animals, on the other hand... certainly give more ambiguous and self motivated evidence of actual thinking going on, whether or not you approve or enjoy their ideas... ;o)
Peters end is really heartbreaking. How could they put him in such a desolate environment after being is an environment that fostered bonding and communication with his caretakers. It was as if he was being punished. That was suicide. He gave up on life. Humans are horrible.

This wouldn’t be the first recording dolphin suicide. The world first dolphin trainer Ric O'Barry, witnessed Kathy’s suicide. Kathy was the primary dolphin used for the famous Flipper tv-series. This event caused Ric to dedicate the rest of his life to fighting against dolphin captivity and sea aquariums.
I also had a dolphin I was very close to commit suicide while I was at college, 3,000 miles away. The damn thing is I had a nightmare that, strangely enough, clearly showed architectural and environmental similarities to the environment where the dolphin died. I later determined that happened no later than 2 weeks after my dream, and her trainer told me she'd been going down hill for a while before that. One has to be very careful, in ending a relationship with a dolphin, to gradually diminish contact to the point where the dolphin can replace you in its affections with someone else. In captivity, they become dependent on us not only for fish, vitamins and fresh water, but for emotional support. They put in us the kind of faith they give to their mates in the sea, and it is total and absolute. You break it not only at their risk, but yours as well.

The tragic death of Peter the dolphin at the hands of those idiots who believe a dolphin can communicate was heartbreaking to see and hear about. Bubbles, Michael Jackson's pet chimpanzee, sprang to mind when watching the video. It would be nice if scientists just left animals alone.

I agree to a certain extent, but there are some things about the natural world that just CAN'T be understood without the observation of or even experimentation on animal subjects. An unfortunate fact of reality is that a lot of modern creature comforts & breakthrough scientific discoveries only happen BECAUSE OF said experimentation. It would be nice if we COULD just make scientific advancements without the need to ever endanger anything or anyone, but science isn't nice.
What springs to my mind is the meat, dairy and egg industry an how they are treated an other animals from the deforestation that is needed for these industries.
what happened to Bubbles? I know that it's been proven that having exotic pets like chimps and big cats is just not recommended because it's so common to neglect them out of ignorance

You would think if they wanted to talk to animals they would start with animals that are capable of speaking. Like parrots crows and ravens.
I once knew a parrot named Spanky that could speak a 150 words he even gave the dog commands and the dog obeyed.
It was clearly far more than just a trick the bird knew exactly what it was doing. His only hang up was he confused the word treat with cookie, Spanky was one smart bird he even drank beer.
Larry the guy that owned the bird. His wife divorced him and left him with nothing but his motorcycle and the bird.
Then I heard that Larry won the lottery maybe not millions but more than enough to retire moved to Florida.
Those parrots can live for 50 or 60 years. I would like to think that somewhere in Florida Spanky and Larry are sitting on the beach somewhere having cookies and beers to this day.
theres a parrot at the pet store that can talk, and actually communicate basically. but hes been there for years because hes $7000+ and bites anything that comes even close.

That was definitely a suicide by Peter. Losing Margaret was no doubt enough of a heartbreak for him, but to then be put into that tiny tank and no sunlight? Had he and the other two been housed in a decent pool, where he could at least swim around, he might have survived missing her, but the loss and then confinement was too much for him. That was inhumane to treat them that way.
Sadly, it seems to be the proof people are always looking for that animals are truly conscious and self-aware. You have to understand your own mortality in order to commit suicide.
It sounds like Peter was never housed in a "decent pool" to begin with. Living in water levels no higher than a human's hip, is no way for a dolphin to live. Add to that, the unnecessary separation from others of his species. He was probably mentally screwed even before the experiment ended. If they were so dumb that they didn't even notice such a glaring issue, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the scientists failed to take care of the dolphin's needs in other ways as well. Especially since it was the 60s, where the idea of keeping animals in humane conditions during experiments was a foreign concept.
Or it was just the horrible environment he was in that caused depression.
I think it does not matter if he understood "the concept of suicide." It is very clear about his actions that he lost his "will to live" and did not maintain his life any longer. Action which talks about huge emotional suffering.
The fact is that through his own actions, Peter died following a heartbreak. That is suicide.
Cruel and insane experiments have been performed on humans and animals. Dr Lilley was a brilliant scientist and he was humane, respectful of all sentient life, as opposed to the 'scientists' (lacking basic ethics or scientific method) tasked with deliberately poisoning African-Americans, prisoners and the general population. Have you been to Bikini Atoll recently?
Those dolphins in Dr. Lilly's research lab pools suffered so horrifically from depression that some of them died from loneliness, lack of body movement and grief.
I identify as a dolphin from now on.
R.I.P. Peter and the other dolphins. They deserved better in life.

Poor Peter! Dolphins really are smart, they communicate with each other, teach each other. They form bonds. That poor creature had no idea why his entire world suddenly changed. and I feel sure grieved that previous life. Even a dog mourns it's master.

Don’t forget that dolphins are wild animals, dogs not. They don’t form bonds with humans, because they aren’t domesticated animals. Though companys like Seaworld like to make you believe that their captured animals have a bond with their trainers, the only thing that they are really interested in is the food they are given by these trainers. They do get used to human company, but they do not form an emotional bond. Also, the thing you should be really sorry for is that this remarkably intelligent creature was kept in captivity. It is impossible to provide everything needed for an healthy life for an animal like this. They get bored and develop massive psychological damage. It is similar to keeping a human locked up in an empty room all its life.
They also gang rape. Left out of this story here is that one reason Margaret was doing this was that dolphins can get quite aggressive, especially when it comes to their "needs". This is a really romanticized version of what in reality was a totally unethical experiment full of animal abuse, led by a scientist with a drug problem and a young woman who didn't have a clue what she was doing there or with her life in general.

My brother's first girlfriend had some big dogs. A mutt and a golden retriever they (her & her mother) couldn't keep them anymore so my family took them. The mutt was male, Razoo the Razzertater. The retriever was female, Buttercup. Amazing dogs. The best dogs for a teenage boy to have around. We had many adventures together.
Buttercup got sick. She had to be ...... put down.
Razzoo simply shut down. He wouldn't eat or drink. He wouldn't move to go to the bathroom, he just laid in his filth. He stopped responding to everyone. He didn't even want to go for truck rides.
There was nothing medically wrong with him.
He died 4 days later after Buttercup. He died of a broken heart.
Animals can love just like we can.
It is medically proven fact as well...humans can die from "broken heart syndrome".
I think that people are purposely closing their eyes from the plain facts that they can see and witness. Denial is strong in humans.

Should have done what Margaret did
Not as extreme, but we had two tiny dogs at one point. One girl and one boy, both fixed. We got them at around the same time and they spent their entire lives together. At around 6-7, the girl died, pretty sure from a snake bite. The boy was never the same. We gave him a lot of love and he stayed in the house all of the time after that, but anytime he wasn't getting attention, you could tell he was sad. He would just lay around and do nothing. Matted eye corners almost all the time. We got another pup hoping to cheer him up, but he was just kind of a jerk to it. We eventually found him a home with a recently retired person hoping that she could give him a lot of attention. Really sad ordeal. We have two younger dogs now again, we're going to get a third in the next year or two to be sure we can do what we can to help when the inevitable happens.

there have been atleast another case of zoophilia between human and dolphins (in this case, female dolphin and male human) that let to a very similar outcome where wihtout her keeper (cause he was fired and also felt disgusted of himslef after years of mating with the dolphin) she shank in the pool and refused to get breath until she died.

I'd read almost all of Lilly's books, used to go for floats fairly regularly and met him once back in the 1970s. The human/dolphin communication idea mainly suffered from having been attempted too early. It would probably have a better chance now.
There's a group currently using AI to try to decipher whale communication.

This is fascinating! I have never heard of this until now.
I saw this story in another, hour-long documentary on RUclips (can't remember where or how it showed up in my feed now, but there you go.) It's a really sad and messed-up experiment, due in large part to huge naivety on the part of the researchers involved. Margaret crossed the line when she started interacting in a more intimate way with Peter - not just for the obvious reasons, but because she must've known she was creating a bond that would devastate Peter once it (inevitably) had to be broken. And as for using LSD...!

I've read "Man and Dolphin" as well as the sequel, "The Mind of the Dolphin" and ended up with mixed emotions about both. Lilly was a medical doctor from the 50's and most of his writing talks about how courageous it is to even consider, much less declare, that dolphins might be intelligent. The man had an ego and spends a lot of time writing about himself and having such bold ideas. The actual info about dolphins could be condensed into a magazine article. But you have to consider the time, way before the Internet, so little was known, much less spread. In the 50's, people could shoot dolphins for sport. They were thought-of as fish. I really credit the aquariums for enlightening the masses. Even the show, "Flipper" was a big help. Before that, people just didn't know.
With guys like Timothy Leary making headlines, it was reasonable to think that LSD might be a technological break-through. I won't fault Lilly there. But I will say that he wasn't much of scientist. He didn't really study the dolphins deeply and observe them for what they were, or are. I feel it was like a window of opportunity lost, and I would love to see someone repeat the experiment with a more modern realistic view.
Lilly was eventually done-in by ketamine. He was totally lost on the drug. And I have mixed emotions about that too. Ketamine has recently been shown to be helpful in the treatment of depression. But we're talking about maybe once or twice a year. More often and it destroys the brain. That seems to be what happened to Lilly.
Thanks to Thoughty2. This was a good exposition, and I never knew that Margaret got the lab and what, unfortunately, happened to Peter. By looking at the past, we can plot the future. And hopefully improve.

Ketamine doesn't destroy the brain in controlled amounts. Ketamine sprays can be used on a weekly basis without adverse effects. Mdma is neurotoxic but it is being trialled for ptsd and depression. The key to counteracting neurotoxicity is antioxidants as well as other substances. Psilocybin, LSD and other alkaloids have neuro-regenerative properties, as well as giving you a totally different outlook on life as a whole. It's a shame that these kinds of substances are still stigmatised nowadays, especially with LSD being given a bad rep after the FBI/CIA experiments. If you dose someone for months on end, no wonder they're gonna go batshit crazy 😂

@@KarrieDreammind5 If you're looking for an interesting read about the earlier days of dolphins, I recommend "Lads Before the Wind" by Karen Pryor. It's about catching, training and studying dolphins in Hawaii in the 1970's. Written from personal experience.

the experiement could have worked if they would have tried using non vocal comunication or if they would have given the dolphine a machine that speaks the words the dolphine wants to use by pressing buttons with his nose
We have 3 cats. One of them, Yankee, talks to me all the time and we have come to understand each other with certain meows, and certain words. They may not be as complex by Dr. Lilly's standards, but some of them are certainly very smart.

First of all i think they are mentally ill. They have a thrive for these animals because they think accomplishing thinks in this area will bring them any sort of advantage of something or somebody. I dont think ANYONE can really understand what is going on with groups in these shape or forms. Sometimes we just cant explain everything. The problem lies within the failure of a whole society and their motivation to move a certain way.

That's kinda messed up Margaret never went to visit Peter after he was relocated...how can one spend so much time with such an intelligent animal and just...move on overnight? Especially after doing what she did. Dolphins are smart. Poor Peter would have been so lost and confused :(
She should have tried to figure out some way to save the dolphins. I'm sure it was harder back then to get people to care about issues like that though.

The ONLY other reason I can think of, is that SHE felt so traumatized after realizing what all she was a part of, she couldn't handle it herself. But she was also a scientist (more or less) who knew what she was signing up for. And if she met some guy soon after and went on to raise a happy family...idk this seem unlikely.
However, it was a classified CIA project, and the CIA did some messed up stuff, so I'm really thinking they maybe wanted to remove any trace of the experiment, and so purposely kept her away. So sad, poor Peter, breaks my heart...

I subscribed to the channel 5 years ago & quit watching RUclips some time after that & in between that time I was hit by a car in 2018 & in the hospital for a few weeks, it broke vertebra in my neck, cracked my right shoulder blade almost in half, cracked my skull, de-gloved my scalp, broke my left leg & shattered my ankle. So I had to move back in with my parents can't work or get out much & I get lonely & bored, after my parents paid me back for fixing the plumbing, I bought an XBOX & finally figured out how to sign in to RUclips & that's all I watch now, because we just have Direct TV & there's never anything on, but talking to my therapist, my medication, weed & you're videos help with my loneliness & boredom & I wanted to say thank you for that

It all started when someone realized a dolphin could deliver pizza.
Imagine one of those floating bar type places where it's a big lazy river that's pretty much lined the whole way with a bar area and stools that you can sit on, remaining in the water while enjoying the food/drinks...that, but with dolphins delivering the food to the customers and getting pet for a tip (or maybe a fish) before swimming on back
People get to float the lazy river and have dolphins swimming around em the whole time too

Poor Peter. To end up in a place like that is unconscionable and obviously traumatic. You’d think that with his importance within this study, they would have at least attempted to ensure proper care after the experiment ended. Just from this show, you’d think the bond bn Margret and Peter was so strong that she would’ve advocated for him. Poor dolphin commits suicide while she made a family in her small dolphin house built for him. Then seemingly forgets about him. Beyond sad.
You try to find some place where you can house 3 dolphins in Miami in the 1960's! There was only Marineland, and Lilly had outstayed his welcome there when, years earlier, he had killed several healthy specimens before realizing that, unlike land mammals, dolphins have NO BREATHING REFLEX! Every breath is a conscious act of will, and if you anesthetize them, as Lilly was doing to map their brains with electrodes, they suffocate. He finally built a working respirator, and got his research done, but Dr. Forrest Wood, the Marineland veterinarian, never forgave him the deaths of those dolphins. So Lilly may have had no other place to go, and for some reason he was unwilling to rehabilitate those dolphins and return them to the ocean, as later projects did. (Sources: J.C. My grandma had a dog named Spike and a parakeet named Pete. She didn't allow Spike on the furniture. When she'd see him on the couch, she'd say, "Down Spike, down. " When Grandma was busy in another part of the house, Spike would try to sneak up on the couch. Pete knew he didn't belong there and would say, "Down Spike, down!" Dolphins kill and rape for fun incase you don't know. They even kill their children so that they can have more sex. They also try to involve sexually with humans.
