This was actually even more genius than people are realizing. Ordinarily, if you put a sub in the game, they have to play at least one snap, you can't send them on and then run them off straight away. BUT that rule doesn't apply if the officials stop play for a review, which is what happened here. Notre Dame running their entire punt team off like that would ordinarily not have been legal...Kirby was yelling from the sidelines "you can't do that, you can't do that" and he also stated in the press conference afterward that SEC refs had told him in the past that it would be illegal. But Freeman knew the rule about the review exception and Kirby didn't and it won them the game.
To carry that point forward, it is legal when any stoppage of play is granted. Plus the substitution rule applies after the ready for play signal is given, which is when the play clock began.
Won it? I'd say it merely iced it for them. UGA's offense was never going to score twice in that time remaining even if ND punted it. But man, what a high IQ heads up call by Freeman. I been watching college ball for over 40 years and this play is extremely rare and rarely excecated this flawlessly. Freeman know the rule book better than Kirby? Sure seems that way. Must have just taken the SEC refs for their word about it instead of actually reading it himself.. lol
@@davidwebb2332 So basically, if they'd run the punt team back out there again, that would have been a penalty since the offensive team that was subbed in wouldn't have run a play? Also, can't wait for another team to try to replicate this without understanding the subtleties of the rulebook loophole, get flagged for illegal substitution, then complaining that "Notre Dame did it, so why are you penalizing us?"

On on a side note I’m curious why the UGA players didn’t slowly walk off to sub since the ref would’ve not allowed nd to snap the ball until the subs are all finished and force ND to a delay of game penalty
I think the 12 team system has shown two very obvious things so far: 1. The winners of each conference should not get an automatic bye, there is no reason Boise State should have been a top seed with a bye. 2. 12 teams is either too many or not enough. Either take it down to 8 or bring it up to 16. Either way it eliminates the problem of having a bye week and too much time off. NCAA is all about money so they will only ever expand to 16.
The only reason they have 12 instead of 8 (and you know they will expand to 16) is to silence people sitting at #9 and #10 in the arbitrary poll rankings complaining that they deserved to be in instead of one of the teams sitting at #7 and 8. I dont like the arbitrary byes given to the "presumed top 4 seeds". They should go to a 16 team playoff and every team plays. The fact remains that if you are outside of the top 5 or 6 teams you likely are not winning the Natty. Now i think there could be a team that say loses their star QB or has a rash of injuries and loses a couple of games early but then comes on like gangbusters at the end of the season and finishes with 2 losses but ends up winning the championship. Maybe that team is ranked in the 6 to 10 range and might get left out of an eight team playoff. I just dont like arbitrarily assigning 4 teams a bye which despite the results this year i think is a huge advantage from the standpoint of injury recovery and team preparation. i would say if they go to 16 teams, anyone ranked in the 13 to 16 range have no shot at winning a title (they could pull a first round upset.. but not run the table).
I think they have to have the conference winners get byes or else teams will refuse to play in them. Or rest their starters. With a playoff system, conference championships mean less for final rankings.
I won't say it was a good game, exactly, but it was an interesting game. I saw an undisciplined Georgia team get outplayed while its coach got outsmarted. I won't say this is typical Kirby Smart, but I've always felt that Smart has relied on high-end talent more than strategy or solid fundamentals, at least in comparison to his mentor, Nick Saban. Smart has been lucky to lead Georgia in the SEC super league era of high-flying offenses. I don't think he would have had any success in the SEC in the 2000s or early-to-mid 2010s. Even though he was Saban's DC for years, I've never seen evidence in Smart's Georgia tenure that he is a defensive genius or that his strategy goes beyond having the best skill position players on the gridiron (and trying his best to keep them from being arrested). Kudos to Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame. I've watched a few Notre Dame games this season and seen a much better coached team than the previous couple of years (which makes me wonder how exactly they botched that Northern Illinois game). It appears that Freeman is becoming a better coach as he gains more experience and learns from his (numerous) early mistakes. Definitely a novelty in either college or pro football for a coach not to double down on his own screw-ups.
Good comments. I thought Notre Dame had plenty of undisciplined moments too, especially with penalties - I didn't even know the defense could get a delay of game, but they managed to get called for that. But definitely an interesting game, and as an Irish fan I was pleased with the outcome.
And to add insult to injury, Toolbag Supreme Turdbee Dumb in his presser claimed it was illegal. What a sad excuse for a coach. Doesn't know the rules and only graduates 45% of his players
ND is going to get blasted by PSU if their offense looks the same way. They can’t rely on special teams to win like this every game. UGA just didn’t have an offense. PSU does.

You give Ga. an extra 5 days to prep and then Kirby displayed the acts of a rookie coach. This could be the beginning of the end for Ga, let alone Alabama and Tennessee. Just shows nothing last forever ,but when Sabin left and transfer portals became hot it has created parody.
He wasn’t trying to run into him on purpose, that’s a dishonest take. Obviously no one is reading his mind, but Defenses legitimately try to block punts. That’s how the game works.
interestingly, Kirby's most obvious bad decision was in 2nd quarter, punting on 4th and 3 from the UGA 45. That's 'go for it' territory. Every possession was critical and he punted it away. Not even the announcers pointed out that he should have gone for it. In the 3rd qtr, UGA had 4th and 3 on their own 39, and punted. This one is more iffy--but in a really tight game where you have the size/strength advantage (maybe not quickness), they should have considered going for this one also. UGA's defense did a good job. Offense didn't do much of anything and punting on these 4th and 3 situations definitely doesn't show much confidence in the offense.

Im glad you agreed that running into the kicker was somewhat smart. I was confused why the broadcasters were criticizing it so much. If it’s only a 5yard penalty it’s worth a shot right?
Never seen this before -I guess SAT's do have importance even on the field.
Absolute domination of special teams by ND, THWg
What a clever design. Special teams really can decide a game.
MR. FREEMAN,COACH OF THE YEAR,MABEY THE DECADE,THE 4 HORSEMAN RIDE AGAIAN
If ND doesn't make it there, they turn it over on downs to UGA in really good position. They pulled this on the 19 yard line. Massive credit to the Irish for having the guts to try something bizarre with that much on the line.
"We're the Catholic Church, we meet you where you're at" omg I didn't know you were this funny. I'm dying
Marcus Freeman has brass ones the size of the Dome. I'm having _fun_ watching these games!
One thing you have to remember, Notre Dame expects … no demands … their players go to class. Few of them are “majoring in football! They are smart kids.
@@derjaeger3321 since Kirby Shart has been at UGA the graduation rate has fallen from 73% under Richt to 41%. It falls below the NCAA threshold requirements for APR but nothing happens to them. Only fools let their children go to UGA.
And they graduate!
You gotta love it.
I started being a ND super fan in the 80’s and it’s nice to see them with a solid program and a bright future
Kirby couldn't call timeout either in this situation, down two scores and already down one timeout. Freeman put Kirby in between a rock and a hard place here.
Kirby is nothing but a cubby excited chipmunk.
We finally have a coach!!!
AMEN!!!
Chuck Amato used to stuff like this at NC State way back except I think he’d rush the punt team on the field immediately and snap it before D was set I love to see when coaches do this makes football interesting again
In pressure packed games...........the most disciplined team almost always wins.
Finally some love for the Irish special teams. They've been causing chaos alllll season. Love it!
Kind of crazy that the only team who had a bye that showed up was Arizona St.
Loved, “we are the Catholic Church, we meet you where you’re at.”😂 we r a GaTech family so this was really sweet! Hi IQ indeed:) Thanks for posting!
LOL that dude was still strapping on his helmet when the ball was about to be snapped
I saw this live and I KNEW you would love it
This play effectively ended the game. Notre Dame didn't actually do much stat-wise, but they won it on a lot of key plays. I thought Georgia was on their way to winning this game for a while until then,
Gunnar Stockton did ok--but at this point he is no Carson Beck. Tbh, I think UGA wins if they had Beck, but it is what it is. ND caused some crucial fumbles, had the KO return, but overall didn't impress me that much, eg. Leonard is a good runner, not much of a passer. I think they can beat Penn St, but no way they can beat the winner of the other bracket.
@@monkeyb1820 It's going to be 2012 all over again. Notre Dame beats a lineup of paper tigers, only to get a biblical beatdown from a real champion. OSU/UT is the real title game of this bracket. Penn State likely chokes against ND, and based on ND mostly just coasting outside of a few plays, they're severely outgunned against whoever they face in the title game.
@@thatonewriter8043I think ND can beat Texas but Ohio will be tough.
@@thatonewriter8043 Classic. You really think UT is a title contender moreso than ND or Penn State, just two days after they BARELY escaped #17 Arizona State in double OT? You're saying UT's resume in these playoffs is way stronger than Penn State (two blowout wins) or Notre Dame's (two two-score wins)? Give me a break.
@@thatonewriter8043 Yeah, I think ND has had some of that 'luck of the Irish' going on; but it will be ending soon. They are fortunate to have run into a version of UGA that just is not as good as the version with a healthy Beck.
Go Irish! Special teams wins games! Got us 16 points ☘️
You have a really cool channel. Thanks for doing the work!
but what you think about 1:34 where the reciever jumped offside. Although the playcall was absolutely genius. To be fair, i tried to slow it down and it seemed like they both jumped at the same time, but isnt there some rule where the d-lineman can return back onside and it be no penalty or what? Tie goes to who?
Don't they penalize the defense when an offensive lineman moves in reaction to a defender moving offsides? Is that what happened?
@@alanhess9306 that rule does exist cause he's protecting himself and technically the defender jumped first anyway but in this case it was a wr who jumped and a d-lineman who jumped. Receivers are rarely told the count, theyre trained to go off when the ball is hiked. Although the play was genius, id call it a false start, because the receiver wasnt disciplined.
@@CassiusV24 yeah in slow motion you can see the receiver move but it was pretty slight and the ref diddnt see likely cause there was so much movement by the defense. The defense did not get back across the line before the ball snapped. Add in the unlikely situation a lot was going on very quickly. Georgia messed up big time in that situation blaming it on the refs is just an excuse.
@@joekaiser3311 I agree, but if the defense can get back like you said before the ball is snapped. Its an automatic false start. Its crazy cuz the ref was literally right in front of him but ya all the movement upfront was distracting. I didnt watch the full game but it seems like the refs were fair
The defense can get back if nothing else happened. If there would be a false start, then whoever jumped is penalized. It’s actually a way to ensure that offsides gets called (as long as the ref sees it all).
ND Coaching Masterclass...
Listened to it on the radio and it sounded insane
im confused...
on that amazing 4th and 1 play you say "the ball was NOT snapped" when Georgia jumped offsides, but it was, and you're saying that while you show the clip of them throwing the flag after they snapped it to catch them offsides...
"Notre Dame...claps, Georgia jumps, but the ball was NOT snapped" - what's so hard to understand about that? Of course, they snapped it immediately after they jumped since they were offside and that's what drew the flag. But he was just saying the ball was not snapped when the QB clapped initially. Just his way of describing the play.
@@goose690 wtf does it matter when the QB claps. wtf are u talking about, he said the ball wasn't snapped and it was.. u sound dumb trying to explain nonsense. no shht he snapped when dude was offsides that's what a center is trained to do. when the qb claps means nothing to the offsides
the clap should be a false start
@@andrewme2245 that's stupid. it's never been and no it shouldn't the sound or motion means nothing. D-line is trained to watch the ball you DON'T MOVE UNTIL THE BALL IS SNAPPED. i played D-1. what's your experience in this....
Georgia should have called a timeout to regroup.
Walkin the dawgs! Go ND!
Georgia got beat by the Catholic Church in the great colosseum
Georgia looked so lost that whole second half man 😭
lol Kirby Smart better start reading up on the rules of football
On on a side note I’m curious why the UGA players didn’t slowly walk off to sub since the ref would’ve not allowed nd to snap the ball until the subs are all finished and force ND to a delay of game penalty
I think the 12 team system has shown two very obvious things so far:
Who do you think should of been in, I'm curious.
Or they can keep it how it is and give the top 4 teams who actually deserve it
Always said it should be 16.
I think they have to have the conference winners get byes or else teams will refuse to play in them. Or rest their starters. With a playoff system, conference championships mean less for final rankings.
Don’t worry, as a Georgia fan, they were never in danger of losing this game 😂
Isn't it Ironic that his Last name is "Smart"
Catholics vs Peanut Farmers.
So what Indy tried to do vs NE in the dumbest play of all time, but this time it actually worked
On the play the Colts did, it was never meant to be hiked, and it got hiked.
So what?
Kirby wasn't so smart, was he? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That's not the play that beat GA. The 2nd half kickoff return is what beat them.
ya but this sealed the deal
Its no mistake the differences in GPA's on the field.... 😂😂😂
And to add insult to injury, Toolbag Supreme Turdbee Dumb in his presser claimed it was illegal. What a sad excuse for a coach. Doesn't know the rules and only graduates 45% of his players
Kirby cried to the refs after every play😂
The periodic blackouts during the video are annoying.
ND is going to get blasted by PSU if their offense looks the same way. They can’t rely on special teams to win like this every game. UGA just didn’t have an offense. PSU does.
I swear Kirby Smart was saying over and over "You can't double stamp a double stamp!!!!!"
Great play but the nearside receiver definitely jumped and it went uncalled.
Yea, ND got away BIG time with that miss.
good eye. def should have been a call there.
Tbh both sides went at approximately the same time(in reaction to the clap), but a flinch is a lot less obvious than 2 guys stumbling forwards.
@@josephj9828 Barely moves his arm at the same time the NT for Georgia nearly headbutts the center. Not a "big time miss".

Notre Dame did Georgia like an alter boy

Your analysis on XAI320 has me all in. Thanks for sharing this hidden gem 🚀
You give Ga. an extra 5 days to prep and then Kirby displayed the acts of a rookie coach. This could be the beginning of the end for Ga, let alone Alabama and Tennessee. Just shows nothing last forever ,but when Sabin left and transfer portals became hot it has created parody.
To run into the kicker on purpose is a lowlife thing to do, but it is notre dame.
Did they call roughing the kicker?
He wasn’t trying to run into him on purpose, that’s a dishonest take. Obviously no one is reading his mind, but Defenses legitimately try to block punts. That’s how the game works.
I wonder why college doesn't have the NFL rule alowing the defensive team time to sub in players when the offence makes a subsitution
They do. That is why you see umpire on the ball preventing the snap and only when defense has substituted too, umpire comes off the ball.
false start on near side wr
Yep. Shoulda been false start
Skill issue. Dogs sent home with the tails between their legs
Well, ticky tacky. He was off the line and the movement looked like he was going into motion. It was not a flinch simulating start of the play.
interestingly, Kirby's most obvious bad decision was in 2nd quarter, punting on 4th and 3 from the UGA 45.
LETS GO ND!!!
Actually, the center of Notre Dame after the substitution, he snapped the ball when a defender broke the neutral zone. That was a great call by freeman though!!!
Glad you enjoyed that because it's probably the last time you'll get to see it. You just know the rules committee will stick a dagger in it this off-season.
I take it no one remembers Joe Paterno anymore and his plays back in the day?
